I mentioned in a previous edition that I gave a talk to about 35 nursery
school children back at the beginning of December (and trembled the
whole way through...:0) Well, the headmistress kindly sent me a copy
of the nursery's monthly newsletter that contained both a photograph
of me speaking to the children and a write-up of what the kids thought
of it. It was a very nice write-up and the kids seem to have enjoyed it,
but the last sentence--which I have written below--hit me right between
the eyes.
「．．．中にはベルトンさんは『着ぐるみ』と思った子もいたようです。」
What...?!?!?!?!?! （◎＿◎） （ショック！）

As you have already presumably discovered from the [知らせ] section
above, I am changing the day of issuing this magazine from the current
Thursday to Sunday, effective from the next issue. I really am sorry if
this causes anybody any inconvenience, but recently I have been
increasingly busy on weekdays and have to struggle to upload the
finished magazine on Wednesday nights. I also tend to be busy on
weekends, but as I receive no work-related telephone calls there is
less chance of receiving unexpected (and usually urgent) requests,
which will allow me to work on the magazine at my own leisure. I really
hope that this will not be a problem for anybody enjoying my output.

★ Back to Basics -- This is a Pen
日本の子どもたちが最初に学ぶフレーズのひとつに、This is a penが
ありますが、わたしはこのすばらしい文がなぜもっと重視されないのだろう
かと、いつも不思議に思っています。単純な文には見えますが、その一部
を少し変えるだけで、さまざまな変化形を作ることができ、それだけでも
会話を成り立たせることができるのです。しかしまずは、この文からどれ
だけ変化形を作ることができるかを見てみましょう。
- This is a pen.
（これはペンです）
- This isn’t a pen.
（これはペンではありません）
- Is that a pen?
（あれはペンですか）
- Was it a pen?
（あれはペンでしたか）
- Do you have a pen?
（あなたはペンを持っていますか）
- Isn’t that a pen?
（あれはペンではないんですか）
- Could that be a pen?
（あれがペンだということはありえますか）
- It can’t be a pen.
（それがペンであるはずはない）
- It couldn’t have been a pen.
（それがペンであったはずはない）
- It was never a pen.
（それは絶対にペンではなかった）
- I’m not sure if it is a pen.
（それがペンかどうかはっきりわからない）
- I’m sure it’s not a pen.
（それはペンではないのはたしかだ）
- If it were a pen.
（もしそれがペンならいいのに）
- Would you call it a pen?
（あなたはそれをペンと呼びますか→あなたはそれをペンだと思いますか）
- It used to be a pen.
（それはかつてペンでした）
- It looks like a pen.
（それはペンのように見えます）
- I think it’s a pen.
（それはペンだと思います）
このほかにも、たとえばDo you like pens?（あなたはペンが好きですか）の
ような文が考えられますが、ここにあげたのはみなペンの存在についての文
であり、よく使われる英語のなかでも非常に重要な要素となっています。
ところが、どれもシンプルで、英語の基本を身につけている人にとっては
お馴染みのはずなのに、どうしたことか、日本人がこれらを正しく使っている
ことはめったにありません。これらの文を会話のなかで見ていきましょう。
A: Is that a pen?
（あれはペンですか）
B: Yes, it is.
（はい、そうです）
A: It looks expensive.
（高そうですね）
B: Not really. It’s just a normal pen.
（そうでもないですよ。ごくふつうのペンです）
これはとてもシンプルな会話です。しかし、もしも英語圏の国で喫茶店
にすわっていれば、このような会話を日常的に耳にすることでしょう。会話
はべつに複雑なものでなくてもかまわないのです。会話というものは大部分、
非常に単純な質問と答えと叙述から成り立っています。たとえば、上の文の
penをLouis Vuitton handbagやPaul Smith suitに置き換えてみてください。
そうすれば、実際にあってもおかしくない会話になるでしょう。
注： It looks expensive.
lookという語は意見を述べるときに非常によく使われます。ぜひ覚えて
おきましょう。うしろに形容詞が続くときは単独で使われますが、名詞
（あるいは「形容詞＋名詞」）が続くときはlikeを伴い、look likeの形で
使われます。以下はその例です。
- It looks expensive --> It looks like an expensive pen.
（それは高そうに見える）（それは高そうなペンに見える）
- She looks happy --> She looks like a happy girl.
（彼女は幸せそうだ）（彼女は幸せな女の子に見える）

☆ Did you know that Harry Potter is twenty-eight years old? It is
possible to calculate back from Nearly-Headless Nick’s deathday
party in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets that Harry
entered Hogarts at the age of eleven in 1991. The words, “Sir
Nicholas de Mimsey-Portington died 31st October, 1492” appear
on Nearly-Headless Nick’s deathday cake, and he had already
informed Harry that the party was in celebration of the 500th
anniversary of his death. This means that Harry attended the party
in 1992, and as he was in his second year of Hogwarts at this time,
it means that he was born in 1980.

Boulder cleared his throat.
“Ahem. You’ll be needing a referee, of course, and I’m
here to see that you get one. Sign here, please.”
Sir Edward looked down at a piece of paper that Boulder
had been preparing while he was on the telephone.
“What’s this?” he asked, the voice of confusion.
“Why, this is our contract,” answered Herbert in astonish-
ment.
“What contract?”
“Well, after all the advice I’ve been giving you, I’d ‘ave
thought you would ‘ave ‘ired me as your legal council. After all,
darts is a serious game and the stakes are high. You’ll want someone
of the profession there to keep an eye on the proceedings, won’t you?”
Such was the euphoria that Sir Edward was feeling that he
didn’t bat an eyelid. Had he been his normal self, he would have told
Boulder--or any other lawyer for that matter--to go fry an egg and
beat a hasty retreat. But, he was feeling mellow. The darts match at
the embassy some thirty years ago was fresh in his mind, and he
didn’t doubt for a moment that he would walk away with the Arnold
‘Doubles’ Henderson darts. He looked upon Boulder kindly, and
although his greasy, smarmy hair and sticky-out ears made him want
to barf, he realized that the poor man had to make a living.
“How much?” he asked kindly
“A tenner?” tried a hopeful Boulder.
“Six is fine,” said Sir Edward, who was nothing if not thrifty.
“Be at the Queen’s Arms in Frith Street by eight tonight.”
“If you’ll just sign here,” said Boulder, indicating a dotted
line.
“What does it say?”
“It just says that I’m acting for you in my professional capa-
city.”
“That’s not necessary.”
“It is when you’ve got the Inland Revenue on your back,”
retorted Herbert heatedly. There was only one thing that could raise
the animal sleeping within him, and that was the good old IR.
“No, don’t worry. For six pounds, I doubt if you’ll get
super-taxed,” laughed Horseworthy, thoroughly appreciating the joke.
“Oh, so you’re going to pay me now?”
“Eh?”
Boulder repeated the question and received an answer in
the negative.
“Well, sign here, sport. I’ve got a council flat, six cats and
a goldfish to keep.”
“Oh, very well,” sighed Sir Edward, taking pen in hand and
doing it.
As he stood and turned to leave the office, revealing a vast
expanse of Crombie-covered buttocks, Boulder could not help but feel
glad that his client was unwittingly taking the dust off the chair with
him.
