(What does “retrograde” mean?)

8回目のチャットにようこそ。

トケイ … 2010年だね。
ウデオ … そうだな。早いね、時がたつのは。
トケイ … ほんと、ほんと。
ウデオ … 今日は18世紀の終わりごろに考えだされた
機械式デジタル技術の1つの特殊機能
「レトログラード」について
話そうかと思っているんだ。
トケイ … レトログラードってどんな意味?
ウデオ … フランス語で『逆行』っていう意味なんだ。
トケイ … そーなの。それは機能と関係あるの。
ウデオ … そうだよ。
普通時計の指針は円を描いて
回転をしてるよな。
トケイ … そうよね。
ウデオ … でも、レトログラードは違うんだよな。
トケイ … えっ? どういう風に?
ウデオ … 円ではなく、指針が孤を描いて、
目盛りの端まで来ると、瞬時に元に戻るんだよ。
この機能のことをレトログラードと言うんだ。
トケイ … 戻る?????
ウデオ … そう、例えば日付がレトログラード
になっている時計の場合、文字盤のどこかに
孤を描いて1～31まで数字がふってあるんだ。
トケイ … ふんふん。
ウデオ … 指針は１～31日まで進み、
31日まで来ると、瞬時に、ジャンプして
もとに戻るんだ。
トケイ … なるほどね。
ウデオ … このジャンプすることを
フライ・バックと呼ぶんだけど、
これがレトログラードの特徴なんだ。
トケイ … 分かったわ。回るんじゃなくて、
直線に進んで、飛んでじゃうのね。
ウデオ … まあ、そんなとこかな。
じぁあ、また第9回でな。

TOKEI … Well, at last we’re in 2010.
UDEO … Yeah, time passes quickly, doesn’t it?.
TOKEI … You’re right.
UDEO … Well, why don’t we talk about
a retrograde display which is
one special mechanical function
seen since the end of 18th century?
TOKEI … What do you mean by ‘retrograde’?
UDEO … It means 'retrogression' in French.
TOKEI … Oh, does it?
Is it related to the Watch-function?.
UDEO … That’s right. A clock hand is usually designed
to go round in a circle isn’t it?
TOKE …You’re right.
UDEO… But ‘retrograde’, not.
TOKEI … How different?
UDEO … It sets out the time or date
in a linear manner.
It moves along an arc.
And when they get to the end
(right hand side), they jump back to
the beginning(left hand side),
and so on
TOKEI … Jump back to the beginning?
UDEO… Yeah. As for a watch with a retrograde
display which sets out the date,
you may find the numbers (from 1 to 31 )
somewhere on the dial along an arc.
TOKEI … OK.
UDEO … a date-retrograde hand travels
from 1, all the way to 31,
and then jumps back
to the beginning. .
TOKEI … I see.
UDEO … We call this movement “Fly-back”.
And this is the feature of Retrograde.
TOKEI … I got it. As to a watch hand,
not going round in a circle,
but moves in a linear manner
and Jumps back to the beginning,
right?
UDEO … Well, you can say that.
