イーベイ、スカイプを分離、子会社化

Associated Press and Reuters — EBay Inc. plans to spin off
its Internet communications service Skype through
an initial public offering.

（AP通信・ルーター通信）イーベイ株式会社は
インターネットコミュニケーションサービス事業のスカイプを、
IPO（株式上場）を通じて分離会社化する計画だ。

San Jose, Calif.-based eBay expects to complete the IPO in the first
half of next year, though it says the timing will be based on market conditions.

カリフォルニア州サンホゼを基盤とするイーベイ社は来年の上半期中にはIPOを
終了させる予定だが、タイミングはマーケットのコンディションによるという。

Share of the online giant rose 3 per cent after hours.
EBay bought Skype for $2.6-billion (U.S.) in October, 2005.
It took a major writedown on the business in 2007,
essentially acknowledging it had drastically overvalued it.

オンライン大企業の株価は何時間か後に3％上昇した。イーベイは2005年の10月に
26億米ドルでスカイプを買収した。2007年にはビジネスの大規模な圧縮を余儀なく
された。あまりにも過剰評価がされていたことが判明したからだ。

In a statement, chief executive John Donahoe says it's clear Skype
has “limited synergies” with eBay's online marketplace and with
its payment service, PayPal.

代表取締役のジョン・ドナホー氏は声明において、スカイプがイーベイのオンライン・マーケットプレイスとその支払い関連事業であるペイパルと関連して
「限定的な相乗効果」を持っていることは明白だと言う。

“We believe operating Skype as a stand-alone publicly traded company
is the best path for maximizing its potential,” Mr. Donahoe said.

「スカイプを独自にトレードされる企業として運営することでその利益が
最大限に得られると信じているとドナホー氏は言う。

The announcement comes a day two founders of web content recommendation
service StumbleUpon said they had bought the company back from eBay,
which had purchased it two years ago for $75-million (U.S.). EBay
shares rose 3.3 per cent to $14.85 from their close of $14.38
on Nasdaq.

発表はウェブコンテンツ紹介事業のスタンブル・アポンの設立者二人が
イーベイから事業を買い戻した日に行われた。スタンブル・アポンは
2年前にイーベイによって7千5百万USドルで買収されていたものだ。
イーベイの株価はナスダック終値14.38ドルから14.85へと3.3%の上昇をみせた。
