お盆

そろそろお盆が気になる時期ですねー。[:おてんき:]

会社によっては、お盆休みが2週間ほどあり、
工場を効率よく停止させます。
長い休みのため帰郷し、家族と過ごす方も居るでしょう。

お盆はそもそも日本語ではないと言うのは皆さんも
知っていますよね。
一般的にはインドからの外来語。
サンスクリット語でullambanaが語源だと言われています。
別の説ではイランから来たurvan（魂）が語源だとか。
イランのurvanはゾロアスター教（火教）の地域で魂を意味し、
霊を火で供養する習慣があったらしい。

お盆では地域によっては送り火という儀式があるから
かなり有効説だとか。

英語ではハロウィンがお盆に当たる。
知ってましたか？[:おばけ:]
ハロとは「神聖な＝Holly」という意味とされているが、
むしろ「死者の霊」を意味し、インとはイブのなまった
形で、前夜という意味で、ハロウィンとは死者が戻る前夜
だとアメリカの英語の先生が教えてくれたました。
（実際は前前夜にあたる）

ハロ（ハロウマス）の日に霊が家族を訪れるので、その霊を
供養するために、前夜にランタンをともして、お菓子を与
えるのです。
これは、アメリカでの習慣だからヨーロッパでは行いません。
と、いうと語弊があるかな？
（先生はアメリカだけだ、と言っていたが）
古いカトリックの習慣、だから、古いカトリックの行事
がそのまま残っているところしか行わない・・・ようです。
かぼちゃを使うのは確かにアメリカだけ。

もともとはケルト民族の習慣で、年末としての11月１日（2日）、
冬の始まりの日＝大晦日＝冬至に、霊が家族のもとに
帰ってくるため、火をともし、食物を与えて供養すると言う
儀式がハロウィンとしてカトリックに取り込まれた。

日本も同じく、家族に会いにくる霊を供養するために、
送り火をしたり、食物を供えたりするお祭りと言うか
儀式がお盆にある。

不思議なことに多くに宗教で世界中に、このような習慣が
あるのだが、お盆（＝BON)ほど、世界に存在が知れ渡った
ものはないように思う。
この時期日本とはビジネスが動かない時期だと、世界の
国際的な企業は知っているから。

でも、この供養については、日本では、先祖を暖かく
家に迎え入れる気持ちがあり、愛情もっての供養の感じ
があるけれど、外国でのお盆的習慣には、霊が襲ってくる
から、機嫌を損ねたいために供養する、といった感じが
あるように思う。



BON

Some companies like manufactureres close their
office or stop the lines for weeks during BON holiday.
People go back to their home town to stay with
family.
I believe it is well known by international businessmen 
all over the world due to non-working weeks.

As you know, BON is not originally Japanese,
it was "ullambana" from sanscrit, said.
Other story said that it was "urvan" from Iranian
language which means "spirit" in the area of
zoroastarianism, and the people in this area
pray for spirits with fire.

We can say that the theory of Iranian language is not
so far from the truth because we do pray with 
Okuribi Farewell-Fire in some area in Japan, too.

"Halloween" is also considered as a type of BON 
ceremony for Christianity.
"Hallow" means "holly" but rather to say it means 
"spirits of the dead", and "een" is the transformed word
of eve which means "the night before" so that 
Halloween means "the night before the dead
coming back", said my English teacher in the US.
(In deed, it is held 2 nights before; 2 nights 
before the day of the dead.
Halloween, Hallow’s day, then the day of the
dead.) 

On the day of Hallow (actually the day of the dead),
 the spirits of the dead visits their family and 
roam around.  
The food and the lanterns are prepared to appease 
those spirits.

Creating Jack-o'-lantern is started from the US.
Actually, these lanterns were originally made with
 a turnip or swede.

Originally this cerebration was started from Celts.
The story of Halloween goes back over 2000 years to the 
ancient Celts. 
Druidic priests had a festival for honoring the dead. 
In order to appease the spirits roaming at night, 
the Celtic priests made fires in which 
they burned sacrifices, made charms, and cast spells. 

Portions of the Celtic holiday of the dead eventually 
passed into Christian culture after the Romans conquered 
the Celts and tried to bring the Celts into the 
"Christian fold."

In Japan, same as those ceremonies, we feed pretas and
spirits with fire during BON ceremony.
But, I feel that it is rather to say the way the Japanese do 
is to welcome the spirits with love and respects, 
on the other hand, it is held because they are afraid 
of these spirits in other area in the world.
