端と端をつける
--------------
Hello everyone, and welcome to all new readers of this メルマガ!
This week's idiom is "to make ends meet".
Quiz
----
What does "to make ends meet" mean?
(A) to keep in touch with someone
(B) to get or have enough money to live
(C) to finish doing something
Here's an example dialogue.
Hiroe: How much does your job pay?
Yoshie: Only 700 yen per hour.
Hiroe: It must be difficult to make ends meet.
Yoshie: Yes, sometimes I have to borrow money to pay the rent.
So the correct answer is (B) to get or have enough money to live,
or to survive on a limited amount of money.
Let's look at one more example.
Toru: How many kids do you have?
Hidemi: Actually I have 5.
Toru: Wow! Is it fun having such a big family?
Hidemi: To be honest, I love it.
Toru: But you must spend a lot of money on food, right?
Hidemi: Yeah, and my husband doesn't earn a lot, so sometimes
it can be difficult making ends meet.
See you next time!
