I wrote this final chapter last weekend and sent it off to CosmoPier on Monday, and I believe it brings the story to a fitting and interesting climax. Gateway to Hell was my first ever journey into the horror/ fantasy genre of fiction, and I really enjoyed the entire writing process, as it provided me with the scope to write in a style that I had never attempted before. I sincerely hope that you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. If you did enjoy it, you may be interested to know that I have another story due to be serialized every week in the Asahi Weekly newspaper from next April. This story is a mystery set in Great Britain entitled The Summer of Discontent. I'll let you have more information on that when the time gets closer. ------------------------------------- I have a busy weekend coming up, with two dinner parties scheduled at my home. The first is today (Saturday,) with friends coming over for the afternoon and evening. Two children will be included in this party, which will probably send the dog insane (she doesn't like children very much and gets very frustrated when we invite them inside the house...) The second party in on Monday evening. One of our neighbors has been transferred across to London by his company and will be leaving Japan next weekend. My wife has therefore arranged a farewell party with some other neighbors. The dog will be delighted at this one, as she loves adults (only because they tend to give her little bits of food when nobody is looking...) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ ワン・ポイント英語 ＜ 「寂しい」は英語ではこう言うの＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ 「寂しい」は英語ではこう言うの 「寂しい」はlonelyという語に訳されることが多く、たしかにまちがいでは ありません。しかしこのほかにも、状況に合わせて使えば会話にニュアンス を添えることができる語やフレーズがあります。 ☆ 状況１： 寂しがる ジョンは、仕事の帰りに飲みにいかないかと同僚を誘いました。その 同僚の妻はいま実家に帰っていて、家には犬が1匹だけ。「あまり長い 時間ひとりぼっちにしておくと、犬が寂しがるだろうから」と彼は誘いを 断りました。英語では次のように言うでしょう。 - The dog gets lonely when left alone. ひとりぼっちにされると、犬が寂しがるんだ - The dog gets lonesome when all alone. ひとりぼっちじゃ犬も寂しいだろう - The dog misses human company. 人が誰もいないと犬が寂しがるからね - The dog begins to pine if he is left alone too long. あまり長いこと放っておくと、犬がしょげかえっちゃうからね 注：ここの場合は問題なくlonelyが使えます。2つめの例文にあるのは、 lonelyから派生したlonesomeという語。この語はアメリカでしか使われ ませんが、そのほかの英語圏でもちゃんと通じます。 ☆ 状況２： 寂しかったわ ジョンが1週間出張に出かけているあいだ、メアリはずっと家に ひとりきりでした。ジョンが出張から帰ると、メアリは玄関へとんで いき、大喜びで言いました。「寂しかったわ」。英語ならば次の ように言うでしょう。 - I missed you so much. とても寂しかったわ - I was so lonely without you. あなたがいなくて寂しかったわ - It was so boring without you. あなたがいないと退屈だったわ - It was awful without you. あなたがいなくて気分が落ちこんだわ - I didn’t know what to do without you. あなたがいないとどうしていいかわからなくなっちゃって 注：このニュアンスを伝えるには、missという語が最もよく使われます が、ここにあげたほかの表現も問題なく使えます。missはとても便利な 語で、日本語では表現しにくいニュアンスも含んでいます。たとえば 以下のように、人間だけでなく、無生物やある概念についても、この 語を使うことができるのです。 - I miss Japanese food. 日本の食べ物が恋しい - I miss waking up late on Saturday mornings. 土曜の朝に寝坊ができなくなって残念だ - I miss taking the dog for a walk every morning. 毎朝犬の散歩に行けなくなって寂しい ☆ 状況３： 自然が減って寂しいな ジョンとメアリは緑豊かな郊外に住んでいます。けれども建設 ブームで野原や森が徐々につぶされ、宅地化されていきます。 ある日曜の朝、ふたりは散歩に出かけるとジョンは、「自然が少なく なって寂しいな」とつぶやきました。英語では次のように言うでしょう。 - It’s sad that we are losing so much nature. 自然がこんなに減ってしまったのは悲しいことだ - It’s a shame that nature is disappearing. 自然が消えていくのは残念だ - It’s dreadful to see nature disappearing. 自然が消えていくのは見るにしのびない - What a pity that we’re losing so much nature. 自然がこんなに減ってしまって残念だ 注：このニュアンスの「寂しい」を表す場合、「残念だ」という意味で 代表的には、sad、shame、pityなどが使われますが、もう少し苛立ち を表すdreadful、awful、terribleなどの語もよく使われます。 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ Potluck － ＜How To Photograph A Puppy＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ How To Photograph A Puppy - Remove the film from box and load the camera. 箱からフィルムを出し、カメラに入れる。 - Remove the film box from the puppy's mouth and throw it in the rubbish bin. フィルムの箱を子犬の口から奪い、ゴミ箱に投げ入れる。 - Separate the puppy from the rubbish and brush the wet tea leaves from his muzzle. 子犬をゴミからひき離し、鼻面についた茶殻を払い落とす。 - Choose a suitable background for the photograph. 写真に向く背景を探す。 - Mount the camera on a tripod and focus. 三脚にカメラを据えつけ、ピントを合わせる。 - Find the puppy and remove the dirty sock from his mouth. 子犬を見つけだし、口から汚れた靴下をひき離す。 - Place the puppy in the pre-focused spot and return to the camera. ピントを合わせた位置に子犬を置き、カメラに戻る。 - Forget about spot and crawl after the puppy on your knees. その位置のことはあきらめ、四つん這いになって子犬を追いかける。 - Focus with one hand and fend off the puppy with your other hand. 片手でピントを合わせ、もう片方の手で子犬を払いのける。 - Get a tissue and clean the nose print off the lens. ティッシュを取り、鼻の跡がついたレンズを拭く。 - Take the tissue from the puppy's mouth and throw it is the rubbish bin. 子犬の口からフティッシュを取り、ゴミ箱に投げ入れる。 - Put the cat outside and clean the scratch on the puppy's nose with peroxide. 猫を外に出し、子犬の鼻につけられた引っかき傷をオキシドールで 消毒する。 - Put the magazines back on the coffee table. コーヒー・テーブルに雑誌を戻す。 - Try to get the puppy's attention by squeaking a toy over your head. 頭上でおもちゃを鳴らし、子犬の注意をひく。 - Replace your glasses and check the camera for damage. 眼鏡をかけ直し、カメラに異常はないか調べる。 - Jump up in time to grab the puppy by scruff of neck and say, "No, outside! Usually he would already be out in the fields working under the morning sun, but as there were no crops to tend he had very little to do. It was therefore his custom to relax for an hour after breakfast with his newspaper and a second cup of coffee. Koki and Chiaki stood nervously outside the door to the living room, a square plastic case held tightly in Chiaki’s hand. They both knew that they were about to get into very serious trouble, but they had no choice. Chiaki, in particular, was feeling extremely remorseful for the trouble they had caused, but more than that, she hated to think that her father was on the verge of being blackmailed by a common crook and wanted to do anything she could to prevent that. Koki, although sympathetic with his father’s plight, would much rather have ignored the whole unpleasant business and pretended that he knew nothing about it, but Chiaki had always been the more rational of the two twins and she always seemed to get her way. Chiaki glanced at Koki and raise her eyes to the ceiling, as if to say, ‘here we go.’ She reached out a hand a knocked on the door. ‘Yes?’ She pushed the door open and the two children edged into the room guiltily, closing the door behind them. ‘What are you two doing here?’ asked their father. ‘I thought I told you to stay in your room.’ ‘Yes, father, we know,’ started Chiaki, ‘but we have something to tell you.’ Their father slapped the newspaper down on the coffee table in exasperation. ‘Look, we are moving to Sapporo no matter what,’ he said angrily. ‘And I refuse to discuss the matter further!’ ‘No, father! You misunderstand. We have a confession to make.’ And before her father could interrupt again, Chiaki began to relate everything that had happened ever since that morning when Yup and Tresi had first pushed the fish onto the windowsill. She explained the threat the Koropokkuru colony faced, she explained about their plan to dissuade Mr. Maeda from purchasing the land, she explained about how Mr. Maeda had seen through their plans and was intending to blackmail their father into selling at half price. Mr. Imai listened in total incredulity and increasing anger, but Chiaki kept on talking until every last detail had been laid before him and then stood with her head bowed while she awaited his reaction. Mr. Imai ruffled his hair with his hands, not sure exactly how to handle the situation. He could feel his anger building to explosion point, but he didn’t know where to aim it. The children’s conniving behind his back would, of course, have to be punished, but he was also more furious with Mr. Maeda than he had ever been with anybody else in his life. He sighed deeply and looked at the children. ‘Listen carefully,’ he said in a low voice, which Koki and Chiaki recognized as his very angry voice. ‘First of all, there is no such thing as the Koropokkuru.’ ‘No, father, you’re wrong!’ ‘I am not wrong! They are just a figment of your imagination, and...’ Just then there was a knock at the door. ‘Yes, what it is now?’ said Mr. Imai, his voice raised in frustration at the interruption. The door opened a few centimeters and Mr. Imai craned his neck to see who was outside; expecting it to be his wife. The door opened a few centimeters more, and the sight that they fell upon caused his jaw to drop open in utter surprise.
