We met up in front of Hachiko at Shibuya Station and arrived at the party exactly on time. Approximately 240 writers, translators, editors and other people involved in the publishing industry attended in total, and a very enjoyable evening was had by all. He has started tweeting in both Japanese and English, so please feel free to follow him at the following address if you are a member. http://twitter.com/y_hareyama One of the delights of Twitter is that it is perfect for practicing English. The people are very nice, and it doesn't take long to make friends if you tweet in English. The following is part of an e-mail message that I received from Mr. Hareyama earlier today. ------------ 何かつぶやくと必ず誰かの反応が返ってくるので、とても楽しいです。 英語でこんな楽しみができるとは、自分でも驚きです。 ------------ That's quite a recommendation, so if you are looking for a platform for practicing English, I can highly recommend Twitter. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ ワン・ポイント英語 ＜「気のせい」は英語でこう言うの＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ 「気のせい」は英語でこう言うの 「気」という語は、英語では何種類かの語に訳すことができますが、 「気のせい」の「気」には、imagination（想像）と関連した語を使うのが 最も一般的でしょう。「自分の気のせいだろうか」という場合には、“Is it my imagination?” や “Am I imagining things?” などのフレーズが 使えます。あるいは、以下のようにmeという代名詞を用いて、”Is it me, or…?”と短縮することもできます。 - Is it my imagination, or is it very cold in here? - Am I imagining things, or is it very cold in here? - Is it me, or is it very cold in here? （私の気のせい？ なんだかここ、すごく寒いんだけど） ほかにも、上の「気のせい？」の３つの決まり文句のあとに、次のよう に文を続けることができます。 ..., or have I been to this restaurant before? ぼくの気のせいかな？ それとも前にこのレストランに来たことが あったっけ？ ..., or have you lost weight? 私の気のせいかしら？ あなた、痩せたみたいだけど ..., or have we seen this movie before? 私の気のせい？ それともこの映画、前に観たことがあるんだっけ？ ただし、「あなたの気のせいだ」という場合には、your imaginationや you are imagining thingsとはいえますが、Is it you,…? のようにyou という代名詞に置き換えて短縮することはできません。 A: I think I am catching a cold. なんだか風邪をひいたみたい B: No you’re not. It’s just your imagination. いや、そんなことないよ。ただの気のせいだろう A: Do you feel a ghostly presence in this room? この部屋、なんだか幽霊がいる感じがしない？ B: Don’t be silly. You’re imagining things. ばかなこと言うなよ。気のせいさ A: I think I just felt a drop of rain. あれ、雨が降ってきたみたい B: I don’t think so. It must be your imagination. そんなことないと思うわ。気のせいでしょう A: I know I am going to fail this examination. なんだかこの試験に落ちるような気がする B: You’ll be fine. Mr. Maeda looked over to the pile of weeds and corn stalks and noted that none of the small creatures were visible any longer. Looking down at his feet, he also realized that Nipa, Yup and Tresi had gone. ‘Right, children,’ said Mr. Imai. ‘It’s probably better if you weren’t here when I speak with Mr. Maeda, so you go off to your room.’ As the children exited the room and ran up the stairs, Mr. Imai walked to the front door, slipped into his shoes and stood outside as Mr. Maeda’s car pulled up. ‘Good morning!’ said Mr. Maeda jovially as he approached. ‘I apologize for arriving without an appointment, but I have something rather important to discuss with you, and I wanted to see you before the postman arrives. I hope you don’t mind.’ ‘Not at all,’ responded Mr. Imai. ‘Please, come on in.’ After the two men were seated in the front room and Mrs. Imai had served them tea, they spoke about the weather and baseball for a few moments before coming to the main point of Mr. Maeda’s visit. Neither of them noticed that by the time Mr. Maeda cleared his throat and began to speak, Koki and Chiaki had crept out of their room, down the stairs, and were now listening intently outside the window, which had been left open. ‘First of all,’ said Mr. Maeda, ‘may I assume that the postman has not yet arrived?’ Mr. Imai nodded. ‘Then, I ought to warn you that you are in for a shock.’ He eyed Mr. Imai sympathetically, as if nothing caused him more pain that what he was about to say. ‘Go on,’ said Mr. Imai. ‘Well, you see, I caught your two children trespassing on my land the other day. I managed to tape them on video, and I am sure you will be shocked to the very core to realize the plan they have been cooking up behind your back. The reason I asked about the postman is because I sent you a copy of this video, but I thought afterwards that it would be better to explain the situation before you actually received it.’ Mr. Imai listened to this with interest but very little emotion, which confused Mr. Maeda. He had been convinced that Mr. Imai would immediately get angry with the two kids and demand to hear more. Instead, he smiled gently and waved his hand, as if encouraging Mr. Maeda to continue. ‘Yes, well,’ continued Mr. Maeda, ‘you see, I have this very incriminating video that proves your children are trying to sabotage the business project we have been discussing. It also shows them trying to intimidate me and damage my property. Naturally, I don’t want to involve the police in the matter, but they are guilty of extremely serious behavior. And, to tell the truth, it has rather dampened my enthusiasm for the deal.’ Mr. Imai nodded politely, but still said nothing.
