In fact, I am so busy that I actually rejected an offer to write a book this week. That's a first for me (and hopefully a last...) On Tuesday 10th, I will be giving a 90 minute talk to the Society of Writers, Editors and Translators, and I still haven't had a chance to work out what I want to say (wasn't it me who accused my son of leaving everything to the last minute a couple of weeks ago?) Strangely enough, the Society decided to hold the lecture in Yokohama instead of Tokyo in deference to me (wasn't that nice?) and they have booked a room in the Yokohama International School, which is the school my two children graduated from. What a coincidence, and what a small world... ------------------------------------- Although I've just said how busy I am, I have been thinking of starting up a separate blog for book reviews for some time now, and last week I wrote a review for an acquaitance's new book and decided to make that the very first review. I have only set up the skeleton of the blog so far, but my webmaster (my elder son, Shane :-) will soon add a nice design and link it in to my website. At the moment it is totally independent from my site, but if you would like a preview, click on the following link: http://blog.chrisbelton.com/ There is only one post on it at the moment; a review of Finding Emmaus (by Pamela S.K. Glasner,) but I hope to add more reviews of different genres of popular fiction and non- fiction as time goes by. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ ワン・ポイント英語 ＜ 動名詞と不定詞＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ 動名詞と不定詞 動名詞（動詞の原形＋-ing）と不定詞（to＋動詞の原形）は、どちらも文の なかで名詞の働きをすることができます。一見すると、書き手はある動詞を 動名詞にして使うか不定詞にして使うか、自由に選べるかのように思えます が、実際はそうではありません。それなのに、好きなほうを選べばいいと思って しまうために、たびたびまちがって使われる結果になるのでしょう。 ☆ 「動詞＋動名詞」の場合 動名詞は一般に、他動詞とともに用いられます。動詞がふたつ連続して 使われ、あとのほうの動詞が -ing の形になるのです。他動詞のなかには、 決して不定詞とともには使われないものがありますから、それを覚えておくと、 まちがえずにすむでしょう。以下にいくつか例をあげておきます。 - わたしたちはミーティングを遅らせようかと考えた。 ○ We considered delaying the meeting. × We considered to delay the meeting. - その手順には古いソフトウェアをすべて削除することが含まれる。 ○ The procedure involves deleting all old software. × The procedure involves to delete all old software. - 彼は土曜日にサッカーをすると言った。 ○ He mentioned playing soccer on Saturday. × He mentioned to play soccer on Saturday. - わたしは詳細をすべて調べることを提案します。 ○ I suggest examining all of the details. × I suggest to examine all of the details. また、動名詞は前置詞のすぐあとに使われますが、不定詞が前置詞の すぐあとに来ることはありません。以下は〈前置詞＋動名詞〉の例です。 - Can you drink a whole bottle of wine without getting drunk? （酔わずにワインを1本全部飲めますか） - She was reprimanded for arriving late. （彼女は遅刻したことをとがめられた） - She saved a lot of money by working overtime. （彼女は残業して多額のお金を蓄えた） - A computer is a wonderful tool for saving time. （コンピュータは時間の節約のためのすばらしい道具だ） ☆ 「動詞＋不定詞」の場合 どのような動詞のあとに不定詞が来るかについては、動名詞より さらに曖昧です。しかし、例外はあるものの、自動詞のあとに来ること が多いといえるでしょう。以下に〈自動詞＋不定詞〉の例をあげました。 - 彼の主張は聴衆に感銘を与えることができなかった。 ○ His claim failed to impress the audience. × His claim failed impressing the audience. - 彼のプレゼンテーションが待ち遠しくてならない。 ○ I can’t wait to see his presentation. × I can’t wait seeing his presentation. - わたしたちはハワイ・マラソンで走ることに同意した。 ○ We agreed to run in the Hawaii Marathon. × We agreed running in the Hawaii Marathon. - 彼の計算は正しく見える。 ○ His calculations seem to be in order. × His calculations seem being in order. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ Potluck － ＜Husband and Wife Jokes＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ Husband and Wife Jokes ☆ The Wishing Well On their twentieth wedding anniversary, a couple decided to visit the quaint old English village in which they had spent their honeymoon. This village was famous for its wishing well, and upon arrival their first stop was at this very place. The husband drew a coin from his pocket, tossed it in the well and made his wish. His wife then took a coin from her purse, but she lost her balance as she tried to throw it in and fell headfirst down the well. The husband looked on in surprise and muttered, “Well, fancy that. It actually works!” ある夫婦が、結婚20周年を迎え、かつてハネムーンで訪れたイギリスの古風な 村に出かけることにした。この村は願かけ井戸があることで有名だった。そして ふたりがこの村で最初に立ち寄ったのは、この井戸だった。夫はポケットから コインを出して井戸に投げ入れ、願いごとをした。妻も財布からコインを取り 出したが、コインを投げようとしたときにバランスを崩し、井戸の中にまっ逆さま に落ちてしまった。夫はこれを見て驚き、つぶやいた。「やあ、驚いた。本当に 願いがかなうとはな！」 ☆ The Magic of Alcohol One night over dinner, Mr. Johnson looked at his wife and said, “You know, darling, alcohol makes you more attractive.” Puzzled, his wife said, “But I don’t drink.” “You don’t,” said Mr. Johnson, “But I do.” ある晩、夕食のときに、ジョンソン氏は妻を見て言った。「アルコールを 飲むと、君はますます魅力的になるよ」。 妻は困惑して言った。「でも、私は飲んでいないのに」。 「そうさ、君は飲まない」とジョンソン氏は言った。「飲むのはぼくさ」 ☆ Warning by Example "Honey," said this husband to his wife, "I invited a friend home for supper." "What? Are you crazy? The house is a mess, I didn't go shopping, all the dishes are dirty, and I don't feel like cooking a fancy meal!" "I know all that." "Then why did you invite a friend for supper?" A long black hearse was followed by a second long black hearse about 50 feet behind. Behind the second hearse was a solitary woman walking a pit bull dog on a leash. Behind that were 200 women walking in single file. The woman couldn't stand the curiosity. She respectfully approached the woman walking the dog and said, "I am so sorry for your loss, and I know now is a bad time to disturb you, but I've never seen a funeral like this. Whose funeral is it?" The woman replied, "Well, that first hearse is for my husband." "What happened to him?" The woman replied, "My dog attacked and killed him." She inquired further, "Well, who is in the second hearse?" The woman answered, "My mother-in-law. She was trying to help my husband when the dog turned on her." A poignant and thoughtful moment of silence passes between the two women. "Can I borrow the dog?" He had some business to see to in Sapporo, and he was looking forward to the long drive through the beautiful Hokkaido countryside. He stopped his car at the side of the road about four-hundred meters away from the gates and climbed out; three small square packages clutched tightly in his hands. He quickly walked the two meters to the postbox that was standing by the road, took one last look at the packages in his hand, and then slipped them through the slot. He checked the collection time, and satisfied, walked back to his car and drove off. A moment later, a small rustling sound could be heard from the bushes beside the postbox, and a small head popped out from between the leaves. The head looked left and then right, but its owner had unfortunately leaned out a little too far, and the head suddenly tumbled out of the bushes, closely followed by a body, and banged onto the ground with a sharp clunk. Yup sat on the ground and rubbed his head dazedly. Although quite accustomed to bangs and bruises, the concrete pavement had been rather hard and he was having trouble marshalling his thoughts. He shook his head one more time, and the objective of his mission suddenly returned to him. Hurriedly climbing to his feet, he stuck his head back into the bush and said something in a high-pitched, chat- tering voice. A moment later Nipa and Tresi’s heads poked out of the bushes and surveyed the scene. Satisfied that nobody was in sight, they walked out onto the pavement, closely followed by two gray rats, who sat beside them with their snouts twitching and sniffing the air. Nipa surveyed the area one more time to make sure nobody was coming, and then dipped a hand into his pocket and brought out two corn kernels, which looked like tangerines in his tiny hands. He offered the corn to the rats, and they accepted them with their whiskers twitching. While they sat on their haunches and nibbled the corn, Nipa took a cloth satchel from his shoulder and crouched down on the pavement. He reached inside, and a moment later brought out a slim plastic case approximately ten-centimeters square; the plastic case containing the video of Mr. Maeda’s security camera. When the rats had finished the corn, Nipa stepped forward and showed them the case. He chattered frantically away while alternately pointing to the case and then at the postbox. The rats listened intently, their heads moving backwards and forwards in time to Nipa’s pointing finger, and then turned their attention to the plastic case. They leaned forward and inspected it thoroughly, sniffing hard as they ran their noses over the surface to imprint the odor on their memories. When they had examined every single centimeter of the case, they sat back on their haunches awaiting Nipa’s instructions. Nipa pointed once more at the postbox, and then ran into the bushes with Yup and Tresi, retuning almost immediately with a branch that had had small twigs tied onto it with grass stems. They dragged this make- shift ladder over to the postbox and propped it up against it. At Nipa’s nod, the two rats streamed up the ladder and disappeared from sight through the post slit into the postbox. Nipa waited impatiently for two minutes, and was rewarded when a small square package began to protrude from the slit; a twitching nose visible just behind it. The package slid further and further out of the postbox until gravity took over and it fell out. Nipa was ready. He caught it deftly and placed in on the ground. He then resumed his stance beneath the postbox, waiting for the next package.
