The title of the book is [ハーフはなぜ才能を発揮するのか] by 山下真弥, and he was interviewed because of his connections to his HArts artists's group. If you see this book in a bookstore, take a quick look. It's quite interesting. And while we're on the subject of Jamie, he has been asked to give a presentation at an international seminar that will be held at Sofia University on November 14 (Sat.) The seminar is called [Reconsidering 'Race' as a Transnational Construction in Global Japan], and Jamie's presentation is called [Inside Perspectives of the Artistic Influences Inherent with a Multi-Cultured Upbringing]. Knowing Jamie, he probably hasn't even started to think of what he is going to say (apart from the title... :-) --------------------------------------- Today (Sunday) is my younger grandson's birthday. Little Josh will be three years old, and his parents and elder brother Liam are taking him to Disneyland for the day. The whole family are coming over here for dinner (and cake!) today, so I am writing this in the afternoon, instead of the evening. Happy birthday, Josh!!! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ ワン・ポイント英語 ＜「カッコイイ」は英語でこう言うの＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ 「足元を見る」は英語でこう言うの 「カッコイイ」を英語で表現する場合、何かが漠然と「カッコイイ」のか、 何か特定のものや概念が「カッコイイ」のかによって、使われる表現が 違ってきます。日本での「カッコイイ」の使い方は、欧米社会でこれに 相当する語を使う場合のニュアンスと同じではないことを、ぜひ覚えて おきましょう。欧米では、単に大きな家を買ったとか、重要な場での スピーチを頼まれたとかいう理由で、その人を「カッコイイ」と呼ぶこと はありません。ふつうこのような場合には、その人の成し遂げたことを たたえて、“Well done!”（よくやった）、“Congratulations!”（おめでとう） などの言葉をかけます。 ☆ 状況 ＃１: よく似合ってるわ ジョンは買ってきたばかりの新しいスーツを、家に帰ってさっそく 着てみました。そして居間にいたメアリに見せると、メアリも「カッコイイ わよ」と言ってくれました。英語では次のように言うでしょう。 - Very nice indeed. とても素敵じゃない - Very smart. すごくかっこいい - It suits you. よく似合ってるわ - You look great. かっこよく見えるわよ - That’s a great choice. いい選択ね 注：こんなときは、着ているスーツについてコメントをすることも、その スーツを着ている人についてコメントすることもできます。「カッコイイ」 はhandsomeという語によく訳されますが、handsomeは後者の場合 にしか使えないことにご注意。つまりメアリはジョンに “You look very handsome” と言うことはできても、スーツがhandsomeだと言うことは できないのです。 ☆ 状況 ＃２: あの人、カッコいいわね メアリと友人はレストランでランチを食べています。隣のテーブル にすわっている男性はハンサムで身なりがよく、ふたりとも彼を見て 「カッコイイわね」と意見が一致しました。英語ならば次のように 言うでしょう。 - What a handsome-looking man! なんてハンサムな人なの！ - He is very good-looking. 彼、すごくハンサムね - What a great-looking guy! なんてかっこいいの！ - What an attractive guy! なんて魅力的な男性なの！ 注： good-looking、great-looking、attractiveは、男性にも女性 にも使うことができますが、handsome-looking は、一般に男性 にのみ使います。女性にはprettyやbeautifulを使うことが多い ようです。しかし handsome-looking woman という言い方もない わけではありません。なんらかのカリスマ性がある中年の女性、 ただしすでにbeautifulと呼ばれる年頃を過ぎた女性をこう呼ぶ ことがあるのです。そう考えると、若い女性をhandsomeと呼ぶ のは、少しばかり失礼かもしれませんね。 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ Potluck － ＜英語版のオヤジ・ギャグ Part II＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ 英語版のオヤジ・ギャグ Part II Q: What do you call something that smells and is noisy? A: A skunk with a drum kit! 問：臭くてやかましいものは？ 答：ドラムを叩いているスカンク！ Q: How did the idiot burn his ear? A: The telephone rang while he was ironing! 問：そのおばかさんはどうして耳に火傷したの？ 答：アイロンがけの最中に電話が鳴ったのさ！ Q: How do you know which end is a worm's face? A: Tickle it and see which end laughs! 問：這い虫のどっち端が顔か、どうしたらわかる？ 答：くすぐってみて、笑ったほうの端が顔だよ！ Q: Why was the math book so sad? A: Because it had so many problems! 問：数学の本はなぜこんなに悲しげなの？ 答：問題があまりにたくさんあるから！ Woman: “Doctor, doctor, my husband thinks he’s a refrigerator.” Doctor: “So what’s wrong with that?” Woman: “He sleeps with his mouth open and the light annoys me.” 女： 「先生、先生、うちの主人は、自分が冷蔵庫だと思って いるんです」 医者： 「それで、何か困ったことがありますか」 女： 「主人は口をあけて眠るので、電灯がまぶしくてたまらないん です」 Man: “Doctor, doctor, I forget everything I say immediately after saying it.” Doctor: “Really? And how long has this been going on?” Man: “How long has what been going on?” 男： 「先生、先生、おれは自分の言ったことを、言ったそば から忘れちまうんです」 医者： 「ほう。いつからそれが続いているのかね？」 男： 「何がいつから続いているかって？」 Man: “Doctor, doctor, I keep thinking that I’m a moth.” Doctor: “Well, why did you come and see me?” Man: “I saw the light in the window” 男： 「先生、先生、わたしはいつも自分が蛾に思えて仕方が ないんです」 医者： 「なぜ、わたしのところに診察を受けにきたのかね？」 男： 「窓にあかりが見えたからです」 Man: Doctor, doctor, I have a terrible pain in my left leg. Doctor: Don’t worry, it’s only old age. Man: It can’t be. A haunting of this scale on his own land should have had Mr. Maeda shaking in his shoes, not laughing happily. They craned their necks to see into the office, and sure enough, there was Mr. Maeda talking into his cell phone with a huge grin on his face. ‘Do you think we ought to check this out?’ asked Koki, looking worried. ‘Yes, I think we should.’ She turned her attention to Nipa, who was still waiting for them at the entrance to the tunnel. ‘Would you mind waiting for a few moments? We won’t be long.’ Nipa nodded his agreement, and the two children began to furtively traverse the thirty meters between the copse of trees and the building that contained Mr. Maeda. The ground was dark and there was a chance that they could trip over something and alert Mr. Maeda to their presence, so they made the journey very slowly and carefully. When at last they reached the edge of the building, they crouched down and moved slowly along until they were precisely below the open window. Mr. Maeda’s voice floated out clearly into the darkness of the night. ‘...don’t worry, I’ll definitely get the land. And, much cheaper than you expected.’ Koki looked at Chiaki, who returned the gaze with a puzzled expression on her face. Could the land Mr. Maeda was speaking about be their father’s land? ‘...No, I promise you. He is desperate to sell, and I will be able to knock him down by at least twenty percent.’ Mr. Maeda went silent as he listened intently to what his caller was saying. Koki decided to risk a look, and gradually raised his head above the window sill until he was looking into the room. Mr. Maeda was standing in front of a desk over to the right-hand side, his cell phone held to his ear. He was concentrating on the screen of a monitor that stood on the desk, although the angle was too acute for Koki to see what was displayed on the screen. ‘...Look, I’ll tell you what I’ll do. If I don’t manage to clinch the deal, I’ll pay you compensation. How about that?’ He listened again for a few moments, and then said, ‘However much you want. Ten million yen, twenty million yen, one hundred million yen. Name your price. It doesn’t bother me, because I know that I will get the land. That’s how confident I am.’ He went quiet again as the caller spoke, and then said, ‘All right, if you really want to know. I have something that will make Mr. Imai reduce his price by another fifty percent. No, it’s not blackmail. Well, yes, maybe it is. You see, I have a tape of his two children entering my property pretending to be ghosts. The security camera caught them standing at the back on the property while strange things happened. I don’t know how they did it, but I have evidence that they are guilty of trespassing, damage to property, and assault, as they also threw something at me. If I threaten to show this to the police, Mr. Imai will drop his price by half. I promise you.’ Koki and Chiaki looked at each other in horror. Before they could take in the full extent of the damage their interfering had caused, Mr. Maeda’s voice sounded once again, and it sent thrillers of terror racing through them. ‘...in fact, they are sitting outside my window right now listening to this conversation.
