My elder son and his entire family caught swine flu in July, and my younger son caught it in August. Because neither my wife nor I were affected, we both thought we had natural immunity because we were both alive during the 1957 pandemic. But, on Thursday it hit me like a ton of bricks. Of course, I don't know for sure that it is swine flu, and, to tell the truth, I'm pretty sure it isn't, but it has made it difficult to concentrate on work. It would be nice to take a couple of days off and relax, but that's impossible. Too much work...!!! Incidentally, if anybody reading this ever catches a cold, please try a Hot Toddy. It's the British equivalent of たまご酒, and it is delicious. The recipe is below: - Pour one finger of whisky or brandy into a mug. - Squeeze the juice of half a lemon into the mug. - Add one tablespoonful of honey (or two teaspoonfuls of sugar if you don't have honey.) - Fill the mug up with hot water and stir until the honey/sugar has disolved. Drink one mug-full of this immediately before bed, and you will feel fine the next morning. WARNING: The Hot Toddy is so delicious that it is difficult to drink just one. But, there is a silver lining; if you drink two or more, you will have such a bad hangover the next morning that you'll forget all about your cold... :-) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ ワン・ポイント英語 ＜「足元を見る」は英語でこう言うの＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ 「足元を見る」は英語でこう言うの 英語には、「足元を見る」と比較的よく似たイディオムがふたつ あります。ひとつはsee one coming、もうひとつはpull the wool over one’s eyesです。とはいえ、これらは少々古めかしいので、日常会話、 とくに若い人々のあいだでは、別の表現が使われることが多いようです。 ☆ 状況 ジョンは車を買い替えることにし、いま乗っている車を下取りに 出そうと考えました。車の売買業者は中古車の値段を低めに 見積もるものです。そこでジョンが出かける前に、メアリは「足元 を見られないようにね」と忠告しました。英語では次のように言う でしょう。 - Don’t let him take advantage of you. 利用されないようにね - Don’t let him cheat you. 言いくるめられないようにね - Don’t let him rip you off. 身ぐるみ剥がれないようにね - Don’t let him make a fool of you. おちょくられないようにね - Don’t let him see you coming. 弱みに付け込まれないようにね - Don’t let him pull the wool over your eyes. たぶらかされないようにね ?上記のフレーズはどれも、実際に起こったことを述べるのにも 使われます。pull the wool over one's eyesの直訳は「毛糸が目 にかかるように引っ張る」。毛糸の帽子をひきずり下ろして、相手 の目を見えなくする、というイメージです。ここで使われている 動詞やイディオムは、次のようにも日常でよく使われます。 - take advantage of... I let him take advantage of me. / He took advantage of me. 私は彼に利用された／彼は私を利用した - cheat I let him cheat me. / He cheated me. 私は彼に言いくるめられた／彼は私を言いくるめた - rip ... off I let him rip me off. / He ripped me off. 私は彼に身ぐるみ剥がれた／彼は私を身ぐるみ剥いだ - make a fool of... I let him make a fool of me. / He made a fool of me. 私は彼におちょくられた／彼は私をおちょくった - see ... coming I let him see me coming. / He saw me coming. 私は彼に弱みを付け込まれた／彼は私の弱みに付け込んだ - pull the wool over one’s eyes I let him pull the wool over my eyes. / He pulled the wool over my eyes. 私は彼にたぶらかされた／彼は私をたぶらかした ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ Potluck － ＜英語版のオヤジ・ギャグ＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ 英語版のオヤジ・ギャグ Q: What do you call a man with three eyes? A: Seymour. 問： 目が三つある男をなんて呼ぶ？ 答： シーモア。 ※ Seymourの発音はsee more(もっとよく見える)と同じ。 Q: What do you call a man who is the leader of a mafia group? A: Don 問： マフィア・グループのリーダーの名は？ 答： ドン。 Q: What do you call a man who never has to worry about money? A: Rich 問： 金の心配する必要のない男をなんて呼ぶ？ 答： リッチ。 Q: What do you call a girl who stands up straight in a field? A: Daisy 問： 野原にまっすぐに立っている女の子をなんて呼ぶ？ 答： デイジー。 Q: What do you call a man with a shovel sticking out the back of his head? A: Doug 問： 頭のうしろからシャベルが突きだしている男をなんて呼ぶ？ 答： ダグ。 ※ Dougの発音はdug（dig「掘る」の過去・過去分詞）と同じ。 - When asked by his teacher where the Magna Carta was signed, little Johnny said, “At the bottom.” ※ 先生は「マグナ・カルタはどこの場所で(・)署名されたか」と質問したの ですが、ジョニー君はwhere the Magna Carta was signedを「（条文の記 された書面の）どこの位置に(・)署名がなされたか」ととり、「いちばん下 です」と答えたというわけです。 - Little Peter approached his teacher and asked, “Sir, would you punish me for something I didn’t do?” “Certainly not,” replied the teacher. “That’s good, because I didn’t do my homework.” ※ punish me for something I didn't doは「しなかったことを（したといって） 罰する」という意味にも、「（何かを）しなかったという事実ゆえに罰する」 という意味にもとることができます。つまり、先生はピーター君が「先生は ぼくがしなかったことをしたといって、罰を与えたりしますか」と質問して いると思い、「もちろんそんなことはしないよ」と答えたのですが、それを 聞いたピーター君はほっとしてこう言ったのでした。「ああ、よかった。 だってぼく、宿題をやらなかったんです」 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ オンライン英字小説 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★★★★ Koropokkuru: The End of a Colony ★★★★ (by Christopher Belton) メルマガ限定オリジナル作品の「オンライン英字小説」の 連載を毎週提供します！ 毎週ワン・チャプターづつ発行しますので、是非是非最後まで読んでみて ください。 --------------------- あらすじ ---------------------- 今井幸樹と千秋は双子で、年齢は１１歳。二人は北海道の中央部に位置 する大きな農場に住んでいる。残念なことに、農場は大き過ぎて一人では 手に負えなくなり、父親は売る決心をした。物件が売れたらすぐに、札幌 へ移り、ラーメン店を始めるつもりでいる。今のところ、購入希望者は、その 土地にホテルを建設することを計画している不動産開発業者のみである。 取引が成立するのを待っている間、幸樹と千秋の父親は全ての作物を 作ることを止めてしまった。夏には、畑一面にトウモロコシやジャガイモ、 その他の野菜などが実っているのに、今年の夏は、地面を覆っているの は雑草だけになってしまった。 幸樹と千秋は農場の生活が気に入っていて、引越たくないと思っている。 そして、農場に住んでいるのは自分たちだけではないことを発見し、そこ を離れたくないという決心をさらに強くしたのだった。農場は、コロポックル という小さな生き物の居留地でもあり、彼らは蕗のとうの葉の下に巣を作り 住んでいる。農場で食物を作らなくなってしまったため、コロポックル達は お腹を空かし、幸樹と千秋に助けを求める。ホテルが建ってしまったら、 彼らは行く場を失い、居留地は破壊されてしまうことになる。 幸樹と千秋はホテルの建設を阻止し、彼らを救えるのか．．．？ --------------------------------------------------- 途中からの方はバック・ナンバーでキャッチアップできます。 Part Iはこちらへ： http://archive.mag2.com/0000251837/20090706103319000.html ----- Koropokkuru: The End of a Colony ----- Chapter Sixteen An Attack on Home Base The sun had gone down completely by the time they reached the surface, and as Nipa had extinguished his torch half-way up the steps, everything seemed pitch black to Koki and Chiaki. They shook their heads and opened their eyes wide until their night vision returned, and then looked around in surprise. They were standing on the edge of large area of ground that was surrounded on all sides by a corrugated- iron fence. Three square single-storied buildings stood over to one side approximately thirty meters from where the children stood, and trucks and construction machinery were parked haphazardly around them. Koki squinted his eyes to read the name written in large letters on the side of one of the buildings, and then nudged Chiaki and pointed. Chiaki looked over and read: Maeda Construction Co., Ltd. They were in the grounds of Mr. Maeda’s company. The lights were on in only one of buildings, and the illumination this provided revealed two small figures, about thirty centimeters in height, creeping along the side of a pile of scrap metal holding something large in their hands. A chuckle beside them drew Koki and Chiaki’s attention back to Nipa, who was peeping through the bushes that covered the ground at their feet. Koki noticed that the steps into the ground were hidden from sight by a small copse of trees that stood in the corner of the enclosure. ‘We are nearly ready for the second stage of our battle,’ whispered Nipa gleefully. ‘I thought you would be interested in seeing it.’ As Koki and Chiaki surveyed the area, they could see other small figures hurrying in and out of the shadows. Nipa and the other Koropok- kuru had obviously been planning their own strategy in the children’s absence. ‘Any moment now,’ said Nipa, raising his staff above his head and watching the movement of the Koropokkuru closely. A moment later, he brought the staff down swiftly against the side of the tree with a quiet ‘crack,’ and almost immediately a high-pitched wailing noise that sounded like a thousand souls screaming in agony echoed eerily through the air. The results this produced were almost immediate. A figure appeared at the window of the building and peered outside curiously. Mr. Maeda! Nipa hit the tree with his staff again, and the pile of old metal scrap next to the building began to undulate and create an awful scraping, screeching noise. The figure in the window blanched, but swiftly regained his courage and threw the window open. A clod of earth sailed from behind the pile of metal and burst just above the window, showering Mr. Maeda with fine dust. And then, a little further away from behind a large truck, a bright, crackling light (that Koki and Chiaki suspected was a firework) illuminated a large white figure that billowed and swayed eerily in the darkness. The sound of the wailing built in volume and tempo, and a large exploding firework shattering the darkness over by the corrugated-iron fence proved more than Mr. Maeda could take. He staggered backwards and seemed to disappear from sight, but a moment later he reappeared holding a cell phone to his ear. ‘He may be telephoning the police,’ said Koki urgently to Nipa. ‘We’d better get out of here.’ Nipa nodded, dropped the staff and held his hands to his mouth. The screech of an owl echoed around the area and the commotion immediately stopped. The next minute, the Koropokkuru came running to the copse of trees and disappeared one after another down the hole. Koki and Chiaki were about to follow when something stopped them.
