I must have woken up, taken the dog for her walks, ate breakfast, lunch and dinner and gone to bed every night, but the details have been completely erased from my mind. One thing I do remember is finishing off the next CosmoPier book, which is due for publication at the end of next month. Although I still have a lot of work to do on revisions and terminology alignment, etc., the main bulk of the work is done, which is a great relief. This book is on the etymology of various English words, and although it was very difficult and time-consuming to write, I think that the end product will be very interesting. I'll remind you about it again when we get nearer to the pubication date... ------------------------------------ And, another item of good news (for me, at least :-) is that I have been asked by the Asahi Weekly newspaper to write two novels that will be serialized back-to-back from April next year. The [Happy Reading] article I currently write for the Asahi Weekly is scheduled to end in March next year, and the first novel will start immediately after that. Although I still haven't had time to work out the details, I can tell you that the first story (and probably the second) will be a mystery. ------------------------------------ And, while we are on the subject of novels, I still haven't received a publication date for my new fantasy novel, tentatively entitled [Reincarnates]. The book will be published by Gentosha sometime in the near future, but a date is yet to be fixed. I'll let you have more information on that when things become clear. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ ワン・ポイント英語 ＜[cross one's mind]は日本語でこう言うの＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ [cross one's mind]は日本語でこう言うの rememberやthinkの代わりによく使われるイディオムですが、これら の語では表しきれない、ある考えが「ふと心をよぎる」というニュアンス を含んでいます。一生懸命考えるのではなく、何か別のことを考えて いるときにふと思い浮かぶ、という感じです。 ☆ 状況1: ある晩、ジョンとケイコは友人を夕食に誘い、インド料理店に予約を 入れました。ところが出かけるときになって、彼はインド料理が好き だったっけ？と突然気になり、ジョンはケイコに言いました。 - It just crossed my mind that he might not like spicy food. いま急に思い出したんだけど、彼は辛い料理が苦手だったかもしれ ない。 - It just crossed my mind that we should have reserved a different restaurant. ふと思ったんだが、別のレストランを予約するべきだったかもしれない。 注：どちらの例文にもあるjustという語は、just this minute（たったいま） を短くしたもの。必要不可欠というわけではありませんが、急に思い ついたということを表すために、よく添えられます。 ☆ 状況2: ケイコの同僚が会社の親睦会の幹事になり、公園でのピクニックを 計画しました。でもピクニックは天候に左右されるので、ケイコはこの 計画でいいのだろうかと思わずにはいられません。 - Has it crossed your mind that it might be raining? 雨が降ったときのこと、少しは考えた？ - Has it crossed your mind that we might have to cancel because of the weather? 天候のせいで取りやめになるかもしれないってこと、ちょっとは考えた？ 注：このフレーズは、疑問形で使うと多少偉ぶったニュアンスになり、相手 の考えの足りなさを指摘しているような響きになってしまいます。これを 避けるためには、“Have you considered...?” を使うといいでしょう。 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ Potluck － ＜有名な臨終のことば--Part II＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ 有名な臨終のことば--Part II - 1856年、ウィリアム・パーマーが絞首台に足を踏みだしたとき の最後のことば。「これ、安全なんだろうね？」 (Are you sure it’s safe?) - 1834年、イギリスの奇人ジャック・ミットンは、しゃっくりを止めよう としてシャツに火をつけた。それによってミットンは焼死すること になるが、炎の中から聞こえてきた彼の最後のことばは「ああ、 これでしゃっくりが止まった！」だった。 (Well, the hiccup is gone, by God!) - イギリスの首相であったパーマストン子爵は、1865年、医者に死 を宣告されてこう言った。「死ぬだって？ それこそわたしが最も やりそうもないことだ！」 (Die, my dear doctor? He brushed the earth from his shoulders and glared at Koki and Chiaki as if not knowing what to say. The children were always mischievous and full of high spirits, but he had never known them to go against his authority in such an aggressive manner before. He was so surprised by their action that for a moment he was at a loss for words and could do nothing more than simply stare at them. Koki and Chiaki lowered their hands and looked down at the ground. There was no way they could get away with an excuse for this; they would just have to accept the blame and whatever punishment their father meted out. Koki quickly passed a glance over to the butterbur canopy where Yup had disappeared and saw Nipa’s worried face peeping out between from the leaves. Beside him, an ear tightly held in Nipa’s fingers, was Yup, looking suitably chagrined and apologetic. ‘I... Who...? I’m...’ Mr. Imai was having trouble finding the words to truly express his feelings. Before he could say any more, however, Koki took a step forward and stared down at the ground before his father’s feet. ‘I’m so sorry, papa. It was a mistake. I was trying to throw the dirt at that tree, but it hit you instead. I really am very, very sorry.’ He bowed deeply. Mr. Imai stared him uncertainly. There was a possibility that Koki was telling the truth and that he really didn’t mean to throw the earth directly at him, but even so, he could not let him get away with such unruly behaviour, and he had to be punished. ‘Come with me!’ he said simply and turned to walk out of the woods. ‘But, papa...’ started Koki, but already his father was nearing the edge of the woods. Knowing that he would be in even more trouble if he didn’t follow his father’s orders, he quickly looked back at Nipa and Yup to send them a reassuring smile, and then ran from the woods in his father’s wake, with Chiaki at his heels. His father walked diagonally across the fields to the house at high speed without looking back; convinced that Koki would not defy him. Koki and Chiaki ran after him, and by the time they had caught up with him, he had already removed his shoes and disappeared into the house. Exchanging fearful glances, the children removed their shoes and followed him in. ‘Not in here!’ said their father as they entered the living room, ‘Upstairs to your room! And don’t come out until I say so.’ ‘But, papa...’ said Chiaki, looking close to tears. If they were grounded, they wouldn’t be able to help Nipa and the other Koropokkuru. ‘Not you, Chiaki. Just Koki. You haven’t done anything wrong.’ ‘But...’ And that last ‘but’ was enough to make Mr. Imai lose his temper. He told them that he was fed up with them saying ‘but’ whenever he gave them an order, his voice gradually rising in volume and his face turning a deeper shade of red. He went on to say that he was under a lot of pressure to sell the farm because the money they had wouldn’t last forever without any crops, and yet every time he turned around they were always under his feet. In the end, he banished them both to their room. And that was where the two children spent the rest of the day, moping miserably and discussing what the Koropokkuru would do without their help.
