The collection includes gold and silver sword decorations, crosses and other items. The reason why I think this is pretty amazing is because the craftsmanship is so detailed. The Ango- Saxons arrived in England in the 5th century and dominated until the Normans arrived in 1066. The treasure that was discovered is believed to date back to between 675 AD and 725 AD, which makes it approximately 1,300 years old. Despite this, the carving on each item is very decorative and intricate, and the entire collection consists of 1,345 items (so far, although this is expected to rise to about 1,500 items eventually.) The treasure has been named the Staffordshire Hoard, and a special website, including photographs, has been set up. Typically, Jamie was out drinking so didn't get to see his own work... :-) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ ワン・ポイント英語 ＜[So far, so good]は日本語でこう言うの＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ [So far, so good]は日本語でこう言うの so farは「これまで」、so goodは「順調な」。先のことは保証できない けれど、これまでのところはうまくいっているという意味です。ひとつ の文にsoを2回使うことで、耳に心地よいリズムを作り出しています。 ☆ 状況1: 仕事中、ケイコのところに経理部の女の子が何かを持ってきました。 彼女を見かけるのはひさしぶりです。彼女が数か月前に結婚したこと を思い出し、「どう？ うまくいってる？」と声をかけると、彼女は答え ました。 - So far, so good. We’re having a wonderful time. いまのところは順調。楽しい毎日を送っているわ。 - So far, so good. We’re thinking of starting a family. いまのところはうまくいってるわ。子どもがほしいなと思ってるところなの。 注：このフレーズは単独でも、ほかのせりふと組み合わせても使えます。 starting a familyは「結婚する」という意味ではなく、「子どもをつくる」という 意味。少し奇妙な感じがするかもしれませんが、よく使われる表現です。 結婚したカップルにいつごろ子どもを作るつもりかときくときは、“When are you going to start a family?” とたずねるのが一般的です。 ☆ 状況2: 日曜日の朝食後、ジョンとケイコはクロスワード・パズルをしています。 ふつう新聞の日曜版のクロスワード・パズルはかなりむずかしいのです が、その日はたったの10分で半分近く解くことができました。次のマス 目を埋めながら、ケイコは満足そうに言いました。 - So far, so good. I think we’re going to crack it today. いまのところはうまくいってるわね。今日はちゃんと完成できそう。 - So far, so good. We should be proud of ourselves. いまのところはいい感じ。私たちって頭いい～。 注：この場合もまた、so far, so goodを単独で使っても、ほかのせりふと 組み合わせて使ってもいいでしょう。ふたつ目の例文のcrackはsolve （うまくやりとげる）を意味するスラング。 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ Potluck － ＜有名な臨終のことば--Part I＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ 有名な臨終のことば--Part I - クリフォード・モーティマーは死の床で、なぜ怒っているのかと たずねられ、こう答えた。「死ぬときはいつだって怒るのさ！」 I’m always angry when I’m dying! - 1879年に絞首刑となったイギリスの強盗・殺人犯チャールズ・ ピースは、絞首刑についてどう思うかとたずねられ、こう答えた。 「天国への近道」 A short cut to heaven. - 1890年に死去したスコットランド人の科学者ジェイムズ・クロール は、生涯、絶対禁酒を通した。死の床で酒を一杯どうかとすすめ られて語った臨終のことば。「ほんの少し飲むよ。今さら飲酒癖が つくはずもないからね」 I’ll take a wee drop of that. By the time the owner of the voice walked into the clearing, the only remnant of the tiny creatures was the movement of the leaves as they gently swayed beneath the exodus, like the rolling waves of the ocean. It was Mr. Imai, Koki and Chiaki’s father. ‘Hel… hello, papa,’ said Chiaki with false brightness. ‘What are you doing here?’ Mr. Imai looked gruff. ‘I want to speak to you two,’ he said having reached their position and stopped before them. ‘What have you been telling Mr. Maeda?’ Koki and Chiaki looked at each other. Had Mr. Maeda mentioned the ghosts? ‘What do you mean, papa?’ asked Koki cautiously. ‘We were just chatting with him. He was telling us what the hotel will look like when it has been completed.’ ‘Are you sure?’ Mr. Imai eyed them suspiciously. ‘Of course!’ they both shouted in unison, breathing easily again. It looked like Mr. Maeda had kept his silence after all. ‘Well, something has upset him,’ continued Mr. Imai. ‘He kept looking at me strangely and moving away from me, as if he was scared of something.’ ‘That is weird,’ said Chiaki sympathetically. ‘Maybe he has been having second thoughts about building the hotel here. If so, does that mean we can continue living here?’ ‘I knew it!’ exploded their father, wagging his finger angrily at the two children. ‘You have been saying something, haven’t you? Now listen to me, you two. It is very important that Mr. Maeda buys this land from us, and I won’t allow you two to change his mind. From now on, you stay away from him, do you hear me?’ ‘But, papa,’ said Koki in a plaintiff voice. ‘Why do we have to move? Please, let us stay here. Chiaki and I will help, we promise.’ ‘That’s enough!’ shouted Mr. Imai. ‘I refuse to discuss it any further. We are leaving here, and that’s final!’ ‘But...’ ‘No buts! You stay away from Mr. Maeda or you’ll be in big trouble. If I see you anywhere near him while he is here, I will make you stay in your rooms until the deal has been finalized. Do you understand?’ Koki and Chiaki looked down at the ground and nodded gloomily. They knew it was impossible to reason with their father when he was in such a mood. Looking furious, Mr. Imai waved a final finger at the two children, turned his back and strode from the woods. To Koki and Chiaki’s dismay, however, a small body rushed out from beneath the canopy of butterbur leaves and ran to a part of the clearing just in front of Koki. He had something in his hand, and before the children could stop him, he had wound up his right arm and thrown it with all his might at the departing back of Mr. Imai. Yup had thrown a clump of earth at their father... The mischievous little Yup let out a high-pitched giggle of delight and ran back into the sanctuary provided by the butterbur leaves before the earth hit its target. Koki’s mouth dropped open in horror and Chiaki’s hands flew to her face in consternation as they watched the clump sail through the air. A moment later it hit their father on the back of the head and exploded into fine dust that settled all over his shoulders.
