The tempo and overall concept are probably not as exciting as The Da Vinci Code, but it is still a riveting book and I am enjoying it immensely. This time the story is set in Washington D.C. and deals with more American symbolism that the previous book, so it will probably be little more familiar to Japanese readers than the European and Christian setting of The Da Vinci Code. If you get the chance to read it, I can thoroughly recommend it. ------------------------------------ I think I mentioned before that I usually get up an hour earlier in the summer than I do in the winter in order to avoid the heat of the day when I take my dog for a walk. We usually leave home at around 6 o'clock and return just after 7 o'clock before it gets too hot. Now that we've reached the end of summer, however, I can return to my winter schedule of getting up at 7 o'clock, taking a leisurely breakfast, and then taking the dog for a walk at just after 8 o'clock. At least, I can in theory; in practice it is more difficult. I have had a very busy summer, and this has stretched into the autumn. The fact that I am able to start work an hour earlier has been a great help to me, and unfortunately I still need that help now. So, I shall have to continue getting up an hour early until at least the first week of October until I manage to defeat my backlog of work. In the meantime, I'm sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeepy... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ ワン・ポイント英語 ＜[Come on]は日本語でこう言うの＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ [Come on]は日本語でこう言うの “Let’s go.”（さあ、行こう）の意味で使われることの多いフレーズ ですが、相手をせかすとき、相手に何かをさせようとするとき、また、 「まさか」「冗談じゃない」といった驚きを表すのにも使われます。 ☆ 状況1: ジョンとケイコは買い物に出かけようとしているのですが、ケイコ の支度がなかなか終わりません。すっかり準備ができているジョン は、しびれを切らして言いました。 - Come on, hurry up! おい、早くしろよ！ - Come on, come on! 早く、早く！ 注：どちらもいらだちを表しています。ふつう、ほかのフレーズと組み 合わせて使うか、ふたつ目の例のように2度繰り返して使います。 ☆ 状況2: ジョンは職場の同僚から「誰が部長に昇進したかあててごらん」 と言われましたが、見当がつきません。それなのに同僚は黙った まま、ジョンをじらしておもしろがっています。早く答えが聞きたくて、 ジョンは言いました。 - Come on, spill the beans. なあ、早く教えてくれよ。 - Who is it? Come on, then, tell me. いったい誰なんだ？ おい、教えてくれ。 注：これらも状況1と同じようにいらだちを表していますが、come on のあとに続く語が異なります。spill the beansは「秘密をもらす」を 意味するイディオム。 ☆ 状況3: 夕食を終えて勘定を支払おうとしたとき、友人が「おれ、金を持って いないんだ」と言いました。ジョンはあきれた顔で彼を見つめて言い ました。 - Oh, come on! You’re kidding, right? そんなばかな！ 冗談だろ？ - You can’t be serious! Oh, come on! まさか！ 冗談じゃないよ。 注：相手の言っていることが信じられないという気持ちといらだちとが 混じっています。 “You’re kidding, right?” や “You can’t be serious!” は単独でも使えますが、“Oh, come on!”と組み合わせるとより自然な 感じです。 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ Potluck － ＜夫婦のジョーク＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ 夫婦のジョーク ☆ An Uncooperative Husband At a school reunion, a middle-aged woman was explaining to a friend how she had just been widowed for the second time. Full of sympathy, the friend asked her how her husbands had died. “Well,” she said, “The first one died of mushroom poisoning, and the second was shot to death.” “That’s terrible,” exclaimed the friend. “Yes,” said the widow, “He wouldn’t eat the mushrooms.” ある中年の女性が同窓会で、わたしはつい最近また未亡人に なってしまった、と友人に話して聞かせた。友人は同情を示しながら、 今までのふたりのご主人はどのように亡くなったの？とたずねた。 未亡人は答えた。「最初の夫はキノコの毒で、二番目の夫は 撃たれて死んだの」「まあ、おそろしい」と友人は叫んだ。「ええ」 と未亡人は言った。「あの人はキノコを食べようとしなかったのよ」 ☆ Mistaken Identity Peter’s wife was out shopping one day when she saw an adorable little puppy in a pet shop window. Not being able to resist the temptation, she purchased the dog and took it home. I’m sure Mr. Maeda didn’t suspect a thing. But, how did you manage to get the van to float in the air like that? That was amazing!’ Nipa turned to the other Kuropokkuri and said something in a high- pitched voice that the children didn’t understand. Two of the small creatures hurried over to a thick clump of butterbur leaves on their tiny legs, reached beneath it and pulled out what seemed to be like a rolled-up sheet. On Nipa’s command, they unraveled the sheet and held it up in the air so that Koki and Chiaki could see it. It appeared to be a long, narrow painting. The bottom of the sheet showed a line of grass, above that was a strip of gray gravel, and at the top was the bottom of a house. Koki and Chiaki looked at Nipa in confusion. Nipa laughed heartily, and said, ‘It was an illusion! We held this up at the edge of the field, and from your position it looked like you could see under the van to the house. The van stayed on the ground the whole time.’ The children clapped their hands in delight. That the Kuropokkuri had the ability to not only create an effective painting but also use it to create an illusion pleased them greatly. They had both recognized an extremely advanced culture in the Kuropokkuru, and learning more of their capabilities reinforced their determination to help them. ‘But, how did you make it rock backwards and forwards?’ asked Koki. ‘It really looked like it was floating in the air.’ ‘Very simple, Koki,’ answered Nipa, sitting down on the ground with his staff between his knees. ‘We used rocks as pivots for thick branches, the ends of which we placed under the van, and then two Kuropokkuru placed all of their weight on the other end. We are not very heavy, but it was enough to make the van rock. Don’t you want to know how we made the sparks?’ ‘That’s easy,’ said Chiaki. ‘We saw one of the Kuropokkuru with a packet of fireworks. He just set them off from inside, right?’ Nipa slapped his knee and laughed out loud. ‘Yes, Chiaki, you are right. You are more observant that I thought. But, now we need to discuss our plans from now on. We cannot do the same thing every day; otherwise Mr. Maeda will become suspicious. We need to plan a different strategy. Sit down here and we’ll discuss it.’ Koki and Chiaki sat down on the forest floor facing Nipa. The other Kuropokkuru had finished hiding the rocks and sheets under the butterbur leaves, and were now sitting in a circle about four meters distant, eating the vegetables that Koki and Chiaki had been bringing them every day and drinking water from bamboo flutes. The gentle mumble of their voices could just be heard over the singing of the birds and the buzzing of the insects, and the soft afternoon sun made lazy sunbeams as it shone through the trees. The atmosphere was so calm and peaceful that both Koki and Chiaki sighed in contentment and dreaded the arrival of the time that they would have to return to the house. ‘Right,’ said Nippa in a business-like manner. ‘I’ve been thinking, and I’ve come up with a few ideas. Do you think you can get your hands on some more fireworks?’ Koki and Chiaki’s concentration increased as Nipa explained his plans, and within a few minutes they were oblivious to their surroundings and eagerly taking part in the conversation. Until the sound of footsteps broke through the forest and a nearby voice called out. ‘Koki!
