The blog is called The Authors' Den, and it is maintained by Lorna Suzuki, the author of the Imago series of books. Despite her Japanese name, Lorna has never lived in Japan, and she does not speak Japanese. She lives in Canada with her husband and children. Part I of the interview is related to my work as an author, and Part II, which will be posted next week, is about my work as a translator. Check it out if you have time. http://www.authorsden.com/visit/viewblog.asp?AuthorID=99745 ------------------------------------ On Tuesday this week, the long-awaited sequal to The Da Vinci Code (by Dan Brown) will be released. The new book, entitled The Lost Symbol, also stars Robert Langdon, the symbologist who appeared in Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code. I will be reviewing this book for the November edition of the 多聴多読 magazine, so I am expecting my copy to arrive early on Tuesday morning. Considering the success of The Da Vinci Code, it will be interesting to see if Dan Brown is able to maintain a similar level of excitement in the new book, and from an author's point of view, I must admit that I feel a little sorry for him. One of the biggest problems with having a bestselling book is that people doubt you can repeat it, and this means that the sequal is viewed from a slightly negative angle; as if people were actually hoping that it is a failure. Personally, I have been looking forward to the book for a long time and can't wait to read it, so I really hope it is as good as his last books. Incidentally, in the late 1990s, I was in e-mail contact with Dan Brown when he was still a struggling author. We belonged to the same writers' mailing list, and he sent me a copy of his first book, Digital Fortress, and asked me to review it for him. We exchanged a few e-mails over the course of time, but eventually we lost contact. I bet he's forgotten my name by now... :-( ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ ワン・ポイント英語 ＜[Give it a rest]は日本語でこう言うの＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ [Give it a rest]は日本語でこう言うの 相手に何かをやめさせるとき、または相手を黙らせるときのくだけた 表現です。また、自分が何かをやめるときにも使えます。give it a breakも同じ意味。 ☆ 状況1: ジョンはバスで新聞を読もうとしていました。ところが4人組の高校生の 男の子たちが騒ぎまわっていて、ちっとも集中できません。ジョンは ついに我慢できなくなり、そのうちのひとりの肩をたたいて言いました。 - Hey, give it a rest. There’re other people on this bus. おい、いい加減にしろ。バスにはほかの人たちも乗っているんだからな。 - Will you lot give it a rest? You’re making too much noise. 君たち、静かにしてくれないか。うるさすぎるぞ。 注：このフレーズは命令文としても疑問文としても使うことができ、ふつう はなぜそれをやめさせようとしているか、その理由を添えます。ふたつ 目の例文のyou lotは、ふたり以上の相手に呼びかけるときに、イギリス でよく使われる表現です。 ☆ 状況2: ケイコは新しい靴を買いたがっていますが、ジョンから見ると、その靴は あまりに値段が高すぎます。それに、ケイコはもうたくさん靴を持って いるのです。ところがケイコはジョンの反対にもめげず、「ねえ、買っちゃ だめ？」と一日中しつこくジョンにたずねました。夕食のときにケイコが またその話題を持ち出すと、ジョンはついに頭にきて言いました。 - Give it a rest, will you? I’m tired of having the same conversation. いい加減にしてくれないか。一日中同じ会話ばかりでうんざりだ。 - Will you please give it a rest? I’ve already said no. いい加減にしてくれないか。さっきだめだと言っただろう。 注：ジョンはここで「しつこくするのはやめてくれ」と言っているのです。 このフレーズのitは、状況1のように「騒がしくする」ことからこの場合の 「しつこくつきまとう」ことまで、どんな行為を指すこともできます。 ☆ 状況3: ジョンはこの半年間、週に3回ジムに通っています。初めのうちは少し 体重が減ったのですが、最近はさっぱり効果がありません。ある日、 朝食のときにジョンはケイコに言いました。 - I think I’ll give it a rest for a while. ジムに通うのをしばらくやめようと思うんだ。 - It’s not doing any good, so I think I’ll give it a rest. なんの効果もないから、ジムに通うのをやめようと思うんだ。 注：理由を述べずに「やめたい」とだけ言うこともできますが（ひとつ 目の例文）、ふつうはなぜやめたいのか、その理由を述べるのが 自然でしょう（ふたつ目の例文）。 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ Potluck － ＜トイレの落書き (Bog Graffiti)＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ トイレの落書き (Bog Graffiti) - You're schizo too? I guess that makes four of us. あんたも分裂病だって？ これで四人目だ。 - Is male or female the opposite sex? 男と女、どっちが異性なのか？ - Death is hereditary 死は遺伝である。 - Halitosis is better than no breath at all 臭い息でも、息をしていないよりはまし。 - Women are right! Ironing is boring! 女たちの言うことは正しい！ アイロンがけは本当にうんざりする！ - Man was born free. Women are more expensive 男はfreeに生まれついている。女はもっと高くつく。 ※ 「男は自由（free）に生まれついている」と言っているかと思わせて おきながら、実は「男はタダ（free）に生まれついている＝何事にも 金がかからない」と言っているわけです。 - What does 'it' mean in the sentence, "What time is it?" 「今、何時ですか（What time is it?）」のitはいったい何を意味するの だろう？ - We are the people our parents warned us about われわれは、両親があの連中には気をつけるようにと警告していた 輩である。 - Why is it that the fluff that collects in your belly button never matches the color of your shirt? へそにたまる糸くずは、なぜいつだってシャツの色と一致しないのだろう？ - Written under a sign that said "Employees Must Wash Hands," someone had scribbled: "I waited and waited, but I finally washed them myself." 「従業員は手を洗うこと」という注意書きの下に、誰かが書いた。「ずっと 待っていたのだが、結局、自分で洗った」 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ オンライン英字小説 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★★★★ Koropokkuru: The End of a Colony ★★★★ (by Christopher Belton) メルマガ限定オリジナル作品の「オンライン英字小説」の 連載を毎週提供します！ 毎週ワン・チャプターづつ発行しますので、是非是非最後まで読んでみて ください。 --------------------- あらすじ ---------------------- 今井幸樹と千秋は双子で、年齢は１１歳。二人は北海道の中央部に位置 する大きな農場に住んでいる。残念なことに、農場は大き過ぎて一人では 手に負えなくなり、父親は売る決心をした。物件が売れたらすぐに、札幌 へ移り、ラーメン店を始めるつもりでいる。今のところ、購入希望者は、その 土地にホテルを建設することを計画している不動産開発業者のみである。 取引が成立するのを待っている間、幸樹と千秋の父親は全ての作物を 作ることを止めてしまった。夏には、畑一面にトウモロコシやジャガイモ、 その他の野菜などが実っているのに、今年の夏は、地面を覆っているの は雑草だけになってしまった。 幸樹と千秋は農場の生活が気に入っていて、引越たくないと思っている。 そして、農場に住んでいるのは自分たちだけではないことを発見し、そこ を離れたくないという決心をさらに強くしたのだった。農場は、コロポックル という小さな生き物の居留地でもあり、彼らは蕗のとうの葉の下に巣を作り 住んでいる。農場で食物を作らなくなってしまったため、コロポックル達は お腹を空かし、幸樹と千秋に助けを求める。ホテルが建ってしまったら、 彼らは行く場を失い、居留地は破壊されてしまうことになる。 幸樹と千秋はホテルの建設を阻止し、彼らを救えるのか．．．？ --------------------------------------------------- 途中からの方はバック・ナンバーでキャッチアップできます。 Part Iはこちらへ： http://archive.mag2.com/0000251837/20090706103319000.html ----- Koropokkuru: The End of a Colony ----- Chapter Eleven A Close Shave and a Successful Outcome As Mr. Imai strode towards them, Chiaki and Koki wracked their brains for anything that would prevent Mr. Maeda from explaining the events of the past few minutes to him. His father was still one- hundred meters distant when an idea suddenly struck Koki. ‘I wouldn’t say anything about the ghosts to my father if I were you, Mr. Maeda.’ He said. ‘For some strange reason, not everybody can see them, and father doesn’t believe they exist.’ Mr. Maeda looked at him curiously. ‘But, surely he must have an explanation for flying dirt clods. He must be able to see those.’ ‘Well...’ said Koki, his mind working overtime as he tried to think of a way out of this predicament, ‘you see, the ghosts seem to sense that he cannot see them and never throw anything when he is around. If you want my opinion, I think they are scared of him.’ ‘Scared of him?’ ‘Oh, yes,’ joined in Chiaki, seeing her chance. ‘He can be very violent sometimes, and that seems to scare them. He was furious the last time we mentioned the ghosts to him. He beat us with his belt, and we had to stay in our room for a week.’ Mr. Maeda looked at them incredulously, glancing nervously at the approaching Mr. Maeda. ‘Yes, it’s difficult to believe, isn’t it? A delivery man was attacked by the ghosts a few weeks ago, and when he complained to father, he was so angry that he chased him off the land with a pitchfork. I felt really sorry for the poor man.’ Koki and Chiaki watched as a frown flittered across Mr. Maeda’s face. Mr. Imai was nearly with them by this time, and the children could see that Mr. Maeda was calculating whether it was in his best interests or not to bring the subject of ghosts up with their father. But, as he was now within earshot, all they could do was hope. ‘Everything going okay, Mr. Maeda?’ asked Mr. Imai as he drew level, passing a glance of annoyance at the children. ‘I hope the kids have not been disturbing you.’ ‘No, no, no. Not at all,’ said Mr. Maeda. ‘They’ve been very helpful.’ Koki and Chiaki held their breaths. ‘Everything is going splendidly. No problems at all.’ The two children looked at each other and breathed a sigh of relief. Mr. Maeda had obviously decided to keep silent about the ghosts. ‘Now, run along, children,’ said Mr. Imai, turning his attention to Koki and Chiaki. ‘Mr. Maeda’s busy and doesn’t need your help.’ Waving their goodbyes to Mr. Maeda and the other men, Koki and Chiaki ran off across the fields in the direction of the woods. They entered just at the point where the white ghost had appeared, and after penetrating them by about twenty meters, they came across a sight that had them laughing with delight. Nipa, Yup, Tresi and all of the other Koropokkuru were busy hiding rocks, thick pieces of wood broken from trees, a large pack of fireworks, clumps of earth and a big white sheet beneath the butterbur leaves. Yup, typically, tripped over one of the pieces of wood and became entangled in the sheet, much to the amusement of the other Koropok- kuru, who fell about giggling. Nipa noticed the children and waved to them, a big grin on his face. ‘Ah, Koki and Chiaki,’ he said coming over to them. ‘I think our first haunting went well, don’t you?
