It was my birthday during the week, and my wife cooked an excellent dinner, which we enjoyed over a bottle of champagne. She also gave me a matching pair of Baccarat whisky glasses. How lucky is that...? Then, on Friday, we met up with my son and his family and visited the small expo celebrating the 150-year anniversary of Yokohama. It was a beautiful day (a little hot, maybe,) and we had a great time. My grandchildren especially enjoyed the giant spider, which is currently on loan from France, and driving their own boats in the children's pool. We had dinner at a restaurant in World Porters before finally returning home at around eight o'clock. And then I had to start work (groan...) ------------------------------------ So, at last we reach the general election. I really looking forward to this one as I love elections (they remind me of sports events :-) But, this year we may be able to see a change in government. Although I think a change is necessary, I must admit to being a little anxious over the changeover of power, considering that that DPJ has had no experience in power. I know that Japan has a sort of shadow government system in place, but I don't think it operates very effectively. Still, it will be interesting to see how events unfold... And then on Monday, a real sports event starts: the U.S. Open Tennis Tournament. And speaking of tennis, my wife was delighted this week to learn that Roger Federer and Andy Murray will be taking part in the Japan Open in October. She is a big fan of Federer and has already purchased tickets for this year's tounament. Have a nice weekend...! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ ワン・ポイント英語 ＜ not (too) keen on...＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ not (too) keen on... 何かがあまり気に入らないときに使うフレーズで、I don’t like ○○○very much.の代わりに使われます。tooはつけても つけなくても構いません。 - Ken offered me some coffee, but I refused. I’m not (too) keen on coffee. ケンはコーヒーをいれてくれると言ったが、私は断った。あまり コーヒーが好きではないからだ。 - I love playing football, but I’m not (too) keen on cricket. 私はサッカーをするのが好きだが、クリケットにはあまり熱心で はない。 - I’m not (too) keen on getting up early in the morning. 私は早起きをあまり好まない。 - Gillian really enjoys watching romantic movies, but I’m not (too) keen on them. ジリアンは恋愛映画を見るのが好きだが、私はあまり興味がない。 - I like most vegetables, but I’m not too keen on cucumber. 私はたいていの野菜は好きだが、きゅうりはどうも好きになれない。 keenという語は、次のように肯定形でも使えます。 - I am very keen on listening to classical music. 私はクラッシック音楽を聴くのが大好きです。 - My wife is keen on Italian culture, so we visit Rome every summer. 妻はイタリアの文化に関心があるので、私たちは毎夏ローマに 行きます。 - She likes romantic films, but George is keen on action films. 彼女は恋愛映画が好きだが、ジョージはアクション映画を好む。 - My company is keen on people who show initiative. 私の会社はイニシアチブの取れる人材をほしがっている。 - We are very keen on ballroom dancing. 私たちは社交ダンスに夢中です。 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ Potluck － ＜イギリス・ジョーク？＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ イギリス・ジョーク ☆ Heavy Responsibility A Scotsman, an Irishman and an Englishman signed up for the Police Academy. They were interviewed separately, and the first question asked by their interviewer, a highly religious man, was, “Who killed Jesus Christ?” The Scotsman went in first, and his reply was, “The Romans did it!” The Irishman was next in, and after thinking for a moment said, “The Romans did it!” Next came the Englishman, who rubbed his chin and shook his head. “No, I’m sorry, old boy. I haven’t got a clue.” The interviewer told him to go home for a week and think about it before coming back for a second interview. When he got home, the Englishman’s wife asked him how he got on, and he replied, “Fine. My first day on the job, and they’ve assigned me to a murder case.” スコットランド人、アイルランド人、イングランド人が警察学校に入学した。 彼らはひとりずつ面接を受けた。面接官は信仰心の篤い男だったので、 彼らが受けた最初の質問は「誰がイエス・キリストを殺したか？」という ものだった。最初に入っていったスコットランド人は答えた。「ローマ人 が殺しました！」次にアイルランド人が入り、少し考えてから答えた。 「ローマ人が殺しました！」その次にやって来たイングランド人はあごを なで、首を横に振った。「いや、申し訳ない。手掛かりが見つからないん です」面接官は彼に、一週間家に戻って次の面接までのあいだよく 考えるように、と言った。イングランド人が家に帰ると、どう？うまくいってる？ と妻がたずねた。彼は答えた。「上々さ。仕事の第一日目に、殺人事件を 任せられたんだ」 ☆ A Sandwich to Die For An Englishman, an Irishman and a Scotsman all work on a construction site. At lunch time, the Englishman says, "Oh no, I've got jam sandwiches again, if I get these tomorrow, I'm going to throw myself off this building" and the Scotsman says, "Oh no, tuna sandwiches again. If I get these tomorrow I'm going to throw myself off this building." And the Irishman says, "Oh no, ham sandwiches again, if I get these tomorrow I'm going to throw myself off this building." So sure enough, they all got the same sandwiches and they all jumped off the building and died. He came in a van with three other men dressed in business suits and carrying clipboards. Mr. Imai came out to greet them, and Koki and Chiaki watched from the edge of the woods as they all disappeared inside the house. Approximately thirty minutes later, Mr. Imai, Mr. Maeda and the other three men left the house and began walking towards the fields furthest away. The field in question had, up until recently, been used for growing corn, but now it was bare with the exception of weeds and wild grass. Koki and Chiaki left the confines of the woods and began to follow the men, keeping a large distance between them. They did not try to hide themselves, as it was perfectly natural for them to be on the farm, and they wanted to be close enough to approach Mr. Maeda as quickly as possible if their father left him alone for even a moment. Mr. Maeda stood in the middle of the field jotting down notes on his clipboard and looking around as their father spoke to him. They could not hear what was being said, but it was obviously technical and it didn’t really matter to their plans, anyway. After about ten minutes, the three men left Mr. Imai and Mr. Maeda and returned to the van, from which they removed several metal cases. Returning to the field, they opened the cases and began setting up measuring equipment balanced on fragile-looking tripods. ‘Oh, come on, papa,’ muttered Koki in frustration. ‘Leave the men to their work and go back to the house. Please...’ But Mr. Imai showed no intention of leaving the men to their work. Koki and Chiaki looked on in increasing exasperation, but by the time lunch came around the five men were still together. The two children hoped that their father would go into the house alone at lunchtime and leave the others outside to eat their own lunch boxes, but even this hope bore no fruit. Obviously Mr. Maeda and the other surveyors had been invited to lunch. Having eaten their own lunch and returned to the woods, Koki and Chiaki watched the five men leave the house. But, much to their excitement, they also saw their father bow to the men and disappear around the side of the house. Their chance had arrived. They hurried diagonally across the fields to time their arrival at the measuring equipment with Mr. Maeda’s, and called a cheery ‘Good afternoon!’ when he noticed their presence. ‘Ah, you must be Mr. Imai’s children,’ he said kindly, a large smile on his face. ‘That’s right,’ said Koki, happy that Mr. Maeda seemed friendly. ‘Do you mind if we watch you? We promise not to disturb you.’ ‘No, of course not,’ said Mr. Maeda, ‘you won’t disturb us, I’m sure.’ And then, he added: ‘You must be excited about your move to Sapporo.’ Realizing that the conversation had moved in their favor, Chiaki said, ‘Oh, yes, we are. It will be nice to get away from the ghosts.’ A look of skepticism appeared on Mr. Maeda’s face. ‘Ghosts?’ he asked. ‘Surely you are mistaken.’ ‘Oh, no,’ continued Chiaki. ‘They are such a nuisance around here. Actually, I’m surprised they haven’t tried to scare you off yet. I hope they don’t interfere with the hotel’s guests.’ Before Mr. Maeda could reply, Koki jumped up and down, pointed at Mr. Maeda’s van and cried, ‘Look!’ Mr. Maeda’s mouth dropped open at what he saw.
