I hope everybody is all right. The summer also appears to have returned, although the nights are cooler than a usual summer, and I haven't had trouble sleeping once this year yet (to tell the truth, I don't have trouble sleeping in really hot years, either...) Already I have noticed a few signs of autumn. The gingko nuts have started falling from the trees in my local park, and the cosmos are in full bloom. The fruit is also falling from the ヤマボウシ trees, much to the delight of my dog. She loves this fruit and knows the location of every tree in the neighborhood, which sometimes means a very long walk. I suppose that means more exercise for me, which is good... Isn't it...??? ------------------------------------ If any of you have visited my homepage since it was upgraded, you may have been a little confused by some of the messages posted on the live Twitter board. I realize that some of them don't seem to make any sense whatsoever, but there is a good reason for this, which I will try to explain. You see, when you have an account on Twitter you attract "followers," who get to see every message you post. They are also free to comment on these posts, and their comments come directly into my Twitter account. I, of course, can see them and reply accordingly. The problem is, the posts that get displayed on my homepage are restricted to the comments I make, so sometimes you can only see half of a conversation, which makes me look pretty crazy. These posts can be recognized by the fact that they start with a [@] mark, followed immediately by my "follower's" account name. So, if you see a strange comment on there that starts with an [@] mark, just ignore it. I am not crazy...! Honestly...! It's true...! Really...! I'm completely sane...! (Please don't confirm that with my wife...) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ ワン・ポイント英語 ＜ 魚の比喩＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ 魚の比喩 ☆ drink like a fish 「大酒を飲む」こと。17世紀から広く使われるようになった表現で、魚が 呼吸をするために絶えずえらから水を吸っていることに由来します。 - I have nothing against him personally, but I wish he wouldn’t drink like a fish. 私としては彼になんの反感も持っていないが、あんなに酒を飲まなければ いいのにと思う。 - You’d better make sure your wallet is full if you are going drinking with him. He drinks like a fish. 彼と飲みにいくなら持ちあわせの金がたくさんあることを確かめたほうが いい。彼は浴びるように酒を飲むから。 ☆ fish out of water 慣れない状況に置かれて居心地の悪さを感じている人を表すフレーズ。 - He looks life a fish out of water in that tuxedo. タキシードを着た彼はまるで落ち着かないようすだ。 - I’d like to help you, but I’m like a fish out of water when it comes to computers. 手伝ってあげたいのですが、私はコンピュータとなるとまったくの 門外漢でして。 ☆ have other fish to fry 「ほかにもっと大切なことがある」「ほかにやらなければならないことがある」 の意味。 - I’d like to get involved with the drama group, but I have other fish to fry on Friday nights. 演劇のグループに参加したいのだが、金曜の夜はほかにやらなければ ならないことがある。 - My parents want me to stay on at university, but I have other fish to fry. 両親は私を大学に留まらせたいと思っているが、私はほかにするべきこと がある。 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ Potluck － ＜マーガレット・サッチャーのジョーク＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ マーガレット・サッチャーのジョーク ☆ Mistaken Identity A working-class lad was walking by the side of the canal one day when he heard someone shouting for help. Kicking off his shoes, he dived in and pulled her to safety. “Thank you, my boy,” said Thatcher once she was on safe ground, “You have done your country a great service. What can your country do for you in repayment?” The boy thought for a moment and then said, “Well, I would like a state funeral and a big marble gravestone.” Shocked, Margaret Thatcher said, “But why? The policeman on duty informs him that Margaret Thatcher is no longer the Prime Minister and asks him to leave. The next day, the man returns and asks once again to see Margaret Thatcher. The policeman tells him that Margaret Thatcher is no longer the Prime Minister and orders him away. The next day the man comes back again, and again the same policeman is on duty. The man asks to see Margaret Thatcher, and the policeman shouts, “I told you that Margaret Thatcher is no longer the Prime Minister. He was a handsome man, but the heavy wrinkles around his eyes and the gray hair on the sides of his head made him look older than his forty-two years. ‘Oh, come on, Koki. Not again! We’ve had this conversation a hundred times!’ ‘But, it just seems such a waste. You’ve worked hard here all your life, and to just throw it all away... well...’ ‘It’s too much for me. I told you. I can’t handle it all alone, and I can’t afford to hire more people. I have no choice, Koki. Why can’t you understand that?’ ‘What about if Chiaki and I helped? There’s loads of stuff we could do. We’d do anything you asked, wouldn’t we, Chiaki?’ ‘Oh, yes,’ enthused Chiaki. ‘We could till the earth, sow the seeds and help with the harvest. We’d do anything!’ ‘What about your school work?’ asked Hikaru Imai, the children’s mother. ‘You need to get a good education. Otherwise you’ll end up stuck on a farm like this. You must have more ambition.’ ‘But, mama, we like the farm! We want to live here! Our dream for the future is to be farmers, like you and papa.’ ‘That’s enough!’ said Mr. Imai testily. ‘We are leaving here and moving to Sapporo, and that’s final!’ ‘Oh, papa, please...’ pleaded Koki. ‘It’s not too late to change your mind. We’ll help you, we promise...’ ‘It is too late!’ snapped Mr. Imai. ‘Mr. Maeda from the property developers is coming to survey the land on Saturday. And that’s the last word I have to say on the matter!’ ‘But, papa...’ But the conversation was already over. Mr. Imai was staring at the television and breathing heavily, a deep frown carved on his forehead. Koki and Chiaki knew instinctively that he was not going to discuss the situation any further, and after another thirty minutes of silence, they decided to go up to their room. Koki and Chiaki shared a room on the second floor. It wasn’t a very large room, but it was big enough for a set of bunk beds, two desks and two chests of drawers, with a little space left over in the middle. Chiaki sat down on the carpet in the middle of the room and hugged her knees morosely. Koki sat on the edge of the lower bunk bed and stared moodily at the open window. ‘What are we going to do?’ asked Chiaki at length. ‘We promised Nipa and the others that we’d try to do something, but we’ve failed already?’ Koki nodded glumly. ‘But Nipa did say that we’d find another way if we couldn’t manage to persuade papa. What do you think he meant? What other way is there?’ Chiaki shook her head. ‘I don’t know. It’s all so confusing.’ The two children sat in silence for a few more minutes, and then Koki suddenly sat up straight, banging his head on the upper bunk. ‘Maybe there is something we could do,’ he said excitedly, rubbing the top of his head. Chiaki looked at him expectantly. ‘Yes...?’ she prompted.
