The publication of my fantasy novel was confirmed. The date of publication has not yet been set, but it will (hopefully) be before the end of the year. The publisher is Gentosha. This piece of news is especially exciting for me for two reasons; 1) it is my first attempt at writing a full-length fantasy novel, and 2) it will be the first novel that I have written that comes out in Japan as an original (all of my other novels were pubished in the UK or USA.) My translator, Junko Watanabe, has been working on the translation for several weeks now, and we expect it to be finished within the next week or so. Thanks Junko! I'll let you know more details when I know them myself... ------------------------------------ So, summer has finally arrived. And just in time for the Obon holidays. If you are visiting your hometown, I wish you all a safe and pleasant journey, and if you have to work, then bad luck! I have to stay home and work, but if everything goes well this month, I might take a few days off in September after the schools restart (it's less crowded then...:-) and visit my friend in Karuizawa. Until then, though, I have to melt in the heat of the summer (I'm a bit stubborn and don't use air-conditioning in my office, so it's always hot...) Drive safely...!!! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ ワン・ポイント英語 ＜ 鳥の比喩＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ 鳥の比喩 ☆ as bald as a coot cootは「オオバン」という水鳥。体は黒い色をしていますが、頭に短い白い 毛が生えていることから、「ハゲ頭の人」の比喩として使われています。 - My husband had a lovely head of hair when we were married, but now he is as bald as a coot. 結婚したころ夫は髪がふさふさしていたが、いまはハゲ頭だ。 - My boyfriend is over there, standing next to the guy who is as bald as a coot. 私のボーイフレンドはあそこ。ハゲの男性の横に立っているわ。 ☆ water off a duck's back 何をされても何があっても、まったく動じない人を表しています。自分から そう心がけている場合もあれば、ただ鈍感なだけの場合もありますが、 ほかの人なら動揺するようなことでも平然としている人です。鴨の羽毛 を被っている油分が水をはじくことに由来するフレーズです。 - I’ve told him a dozen times to get a haircut, but it is like water off a duck’s back. 散髪に行きなさいと何度も何度も言っているのだが、彼はまるで気に とめない。 - Don’t expect him to be polite to your friends. Everything you say will be like water off a duck’s back. 彼が君の友だちに礼儀正しく接するなんて期待するなよ。彼には何を 言っても馬の耳に念仏なんだ。 ☆ as the crow flies 「一直線に」の意味。行く手に障害物があるとき、人間はそれを避けて 遠回りをしなければなりませんが、鳥（ここの場合は「カラス」）はその上 を越えてまっすぐに飛んでいくことができますから。 - It is only five minutes from the station to my house as the crow flies, but it takes nearly fifteen minutes to walk it. 駅から私の家まで直進できればたった5分だが、実際に歩くと15分かかる。 - It’s about ten kilometers from my house to Disneyland as the crow flies, but it’s nearer to fifteen by car. 私の家からディズニーランドまで直線距離で約10キロだが、実際は車で 15キロ近くある。 ☆ a wild goose chase 手に入るあてのないものを追い求めること。野生の雁を素手で捕らえる ことは、それほど難しいのです。 - He is going to ask her for a date tonight, but I think he is on a wild goose chase. 彼は今晩、彼女をデートに誘おうとしているが、誘っても無駄だと思う。 - I intend to ask the bank to extend my loan, although it’s probably a wild goose chase. ローンの返済期限を延ばしてもらおうと思っているが、たぶん頼んでも無理だろう。 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ Potluck － ＜政治家たちの毒舌集＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ 政治家たちの毒舌集 - 誰のコメントかは不明だが、デイヴィッド・リディントンを評して 「彼は話すときに自分の手をどうすべきかを知らない。その手で自分 の口をふさがないとは遺憾である」 (“When he speaks he doesn’t know what to do with his hands. It’s a pity he doesn’t put them over his mouth.”) - ウィンストン・チャーチルは、ベッシー・ブラドックに「あなたは 飲んだくれだ」と責められ、次のように言った。 「そしてマダム、あなたのご面相はまずい。わたしはあしたの朝には しらふに戻るだろうがね」 ("And you, madam, are ugly. He gestured for Koki and Chiaki to do the same, and once they were sitting down and hugging their knees, he looked at them kindly. ‘This colony of Koropokkuru has lived on this land for many centuries,’ he explained, his long, white beard folded in his lap. ‘We have nowhere else to go. If your father sells the land and it is dug up to build a hotel, we will surely die.’ ‘But, why?’ asked Koki, a puzzled look on his face. ‘There is lots of empty land around here. There are thousands of places you could go.’ ‘Ah, it is not that simple, Koki,’ replied Nipa sadly. ‘Most of the surrounding land is occupied by other colonies of Koropokkuru, and they would not allow us to share it.’ Chiaki’s brow furrowed into a frown. ‘Other colonies?’ she asked. ‘Around here?’ ‘Yes, that’s right,’ laughed Nipa. ‘Many, many, many. But, each acre of land only has enough food to support a certain number of Koropokkuru, and the size of each colony is determined by the size of the land they live on. If we tried to share land with another colony, they would not have sufficient to eat.’ ‘Oh, dear, that’s terrible!’ exclaimed Chiaki. ‘Can’t you trade food between the colonies so that everyone has enough to eat?’ ‘Oh, we do, Chiaki. The fish we gave you today were traded with an adjoining colony that has a river running through its land. We gave them the last of our potatoes for the fish.’ ‘You gave them your last potatoes? So you could give us a gift?’ Chiaki’s eyes filled with tears at the thought of this kindness. She looked away from Nipa and stared at the other Koropokkuru, who were regaining consciousness one after another and running back to the uneaten food as if nothing had happened. ‘Don’t look so sad, Chiaki,’ urged Nipa. ‘We were not motivated by a feeling of kindness towards you, alas. We simply thought that it was a calculated risk. A few potatoes would not have lasted us long, so we decided that we had no choice but to request the help of the humans. That’s you, by the way.’ Chiaki looked back at him and wiped the tears from her cheeks with the back of her hand. ‘It’s still the saddest thing I’ve ever heard,’ she said. ‘You should have asked for help before you ran out of food. ‘Ah, maybe you’re right, but the Koropokkuru have avoided direct contact with humans ever since one tried to capture a beautiful Koropokkuru princess many years ago. If the other colonies around here heard that we had established contact with you, they would not be very pleased.’ ‘I see,’ said Chiaki, not completely understanding. ‘But, wouldn’t it have been better if you had contacted our father? We are only children, and there’s not much we can do.’ ‘Don’t underestimate yourself, Chiaki. Children have more power than you think.’ Chiaki and Koki looked at each other puzzled. ‘What do you mean?’ asked Koki eventually. ‘Well, Koki, children are very resourceful. If you really want to stay on this farm, you will find a way. Maybe you can persuade your father to stay, but if he won’t listen, you’ll find another way. Just try, that’s all I’m asking’ Koki looked at Chiaki again, his eyebrows raised. ‘Shall we give it a try?’ he asked.
