We had one or two problems on Tuesday, such as the Twitter field not displaying correctly, etc., but we managed to get them all sorted out and everything has been running smoothly since. The site was designed and developed by my elder son, Shane, who operates his own design company named Blueprint. He worked really hard on it, and I would like to take this opportunity to say a big 'Thank you!' to him here. The entire site contains about 110 pages at the moment, which is a large increase on the previous site. When I have time, I intend to add more information and photographs, as well as one or two new pages. One page I am thinking of at the moment is a page on Harry Potter Trivia. Yesterday morning was 21 deg.C when I took the dog for a walk. Even the dog looked surprised when I told her London was warmer...! I've also noticed several signs of autumn that are not usually seen until late August, such as gingko nuts falling off the trees and red dragonflies everywhere. El Nino's got a lot to answer for... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ ワン・ポイント英語 ＜ 犬の比喩－Part II＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ 犬の比喩－Part II ☆ dog-eat-dog world dog-eag-dogは「共食い」。食うか食われるかの「競争社会」のこと。 - I warned her that the entertainment business was a dog-eat-dog world before she became involved. 私は彼女がエンターテインメント業界に足を踏み入れる前に、そこは 互いにしのぎを削りあう厳しい世界だと警告した。 - The competition in the sales department is fierce. It’s a real dog-eat-dog world. 販売部内の競争は激烈だ。まさに食うか食われるかの世界だ。 ☆ doggie-bag 食べきれなかった食べ物をレストランから家に持ち帰るときに使う袋。 食べ物を無駄にするのはよくないので犬にやるという名目で持ち帰る のですが、実は人間が食べたりして．．．。 - We couldn’t finish all of the food we ordered so asked for a doggy-bag. 注文した料理が食べきれなかったので、ドギーバッグを頼んだ。 - There’s lots of food left over, so I can make you up a doggy-bag if you want. 食べ物がたくさん残ったので、もしよかったらドギーバッグに詰めますよ。 ☆ sick as a dog ひどく具合が悪いとき、またはひどく気落ちしたときに使うフレーズです。 - I was as sick as a dog over Christmas, so didn’t enjoy it very much. クリスマスのあいだずっと具合が悪かったので、あまり楽しめなかった。 - He was as sick as a dog when he heard that his old girlfriend was getting married. 昔のガールフレンドが結婚すると聞いて、彼はひどく落ち込んだ。 ☆ that dog won’t hunt 「ほとんど無理」「役立たず」の意味。猟師にとって狩りをしない犬は役に 立ちません。このことから、どうせ期待どおりのことはできないだろうという 意味で使われます。 - The boss announced a new sales strategy during the meeting, but I don’t think that dog will hunt. 上司が新しい販売戦略を発表したが、うまくいくとは思えない。 - My wife thinks a new dress will make her look beautiful, but I don’t think that dog will hunt. 妻は新しい服を着れば自分が美しく見えるだろうと思っているが、無駄な ことに思える。 ☆ bark up the wrong tree 「まちがえる」「まちがった方向に進む」の意味。19世紀から使われるように なったフレーズです。猟師たちはアライグマが隠れている木の下でほえる ように、犬を訓練しました。でも、犬が勘違いして、アライグマのいない木 の下でほえることがあったのでしょう。 - You’re barking up the wrong tree if you think I will lend you any money. ぼくが君に金を貸すと思うなら見当違いだ。 - He was expecting a large order out of that client, but it seems he was barking up the wrong tree. 彼はその取引先から大口の注文がもらえると期待しているが、見当違い に思える。 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ Potluck － ＜イギリスの政治ジョーク＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ イギリスの政治ジョーク ☆ Survival of the Fastest Two MPs on an overseas trip to Canada, one Labour, one Tory. Trekking through the woods they get lost and suddenly find themselves confronted by a 500lb grizzly bear. The Labour MP stoops down, pulls a pair of running shoes out of his rucksack and puts them on. Noticing this, the Tory MP starts laughing. “Goodness me, you Labour chaps don’t know anything about wildlife or the countryside, do you? You old fool. You’ll never be able to outrun a grizzly bear.” Turning on his heels, the Labour MP shouts back: “I don’t have to outrun the grizzly. I just have to outrun you.” ふたりの下院議員がカナダに出かけた。ひとりは労働党員、もうひとりは 保守党員だ。森の中を歩いているうちにふたりは道に迷い、体重二百数十 キロもあろうかという灰色グマに出くわした。労働党員はかがんでリュック からランニングシューズを取り出し、それをはいた。それに気づいた 保守党員は、笑いながら言った。「やれやれ、労働党のやつらは野生動物 のことも田舎の自然のことも知らないとみえるな。このばかめ。灰色グマから 逃げきることなんかできやしないさ」労働党員はうしろをふり向いてどなった。 「おれは灰色グマから逃げようってわけじゃない。あんたより先を走りたいだけ さ」 （※ そうすれば、クマは先に捕まえた保守党員を餌食にするはずですよね。） ☆ World Peace and Single-Malt Whisky The Minister of the Home Affairs received a phone call from a national newspaper one December asking what he wanted for Christmas. The minister was very flattered, but replied, “Nothing really, but if you insist, a bottle of single-malt whisky and a box of cigars would be nice.” On Christmas Eve, the newspaper arrived on his doorstep with a front-page feature on what British politicians would like for Christmas. Tresi and Yup’s mother, Hapo, dropped her potato with a gasp and came hurrying over to where Nipa lay; the other small creatures running after her. She immediately dropped to the ground beside him and began to slap him gently on both cheeks. The other Koropokkuru gathered around, chattering together and looking anxious. Hapo leaned closer to Nipa and spoke loudly in his ear, all the while slapping his cheeks and shaking his shoulders alternately. After what seemed like hours, but was probably only about two minutes, Nipa finally began to groan and shake his head. Chiaki and Koki breathed deep sighs of relief, but continued looking on anxiously while he pushed himself up into a sitting position and glanced around curiously as if dazed. Suddenly a frown formed on his forehead, and he pushed the fussing Hapo out of the way and got to his feet with the aid of his staff. He moved closer to Chiaki, and said: ‘Is it true? A hotel? Here?’ Chiaki nodded glumly, and Nipa’s shoulder’s drooped. Looking ten years older, Nipa slowly turned until he was facing the rest of the Koropokkuru and raised his staff in the air for silence. The noisy chattering of the small creatures gradually began to die out until the only noise that could be heard in the woods was the singing of the birds. Nipa kept his staff held high in the air until he was sure that he had the attention of every Kokopokkuru, and then began to speak solemnly in a tongue that Chiaki and Koki could not understand. That he was explaining the fate of the farm was obvious almost immediately. Hapo, who was standing at the very front of the group, suddenly staggered a little, her eyes rolling up in their sockets. As Chiaki and Koki watched, she keeled over until she was lying uncon- scious on the ground. But, before they could run to her assistance, the other Koropokkuru began to show the same symptoms, and one by one they all toppled over and lay in a heap at the feet of Nipa. ‘Oh, dear!’ exclaimed Chiaki, close to panic as she surveyed the grotesque pile of bodies scattered over the ground. ‘What shall we do?’ ‘Don’t worry about them,’ said Nipa. ‘They’ll come round in a minute.’ ‘Are you sure?’ questioned Chiaki doubtfully. ‘Does this sort of thing happen often?’ Nipa considered the question for a moment, and then nodded his head. ‘Quite often, I suppose,’ he said. ‘Only when we get a shock, though,’ he added quickly, as if worried the two children may receive the wrong impression. ‘Well…’ said Chiaki uncertainly. ‘If you’re sure…’ ‘Yes, yes, of course I’m sure,’ announced Nipa, waving the subject away and piercing Chiaki and Koki with a penetrating stare. ‘But, you must stop the hotel. Do you understand? You cannot let your father sell the farm. This is very important.’ Chiaki glanced helplessly at her brother and sighed. ‘Well, Nipa, we’d love to help. We don’t want to leave here either, do we, Koki?’ Koki shook his head vigorously. ‘Then the matter is settled,’ exclaimed Nipa happily. ‘Thank you very much.’ ‘But,’ started Koki, noticing that some of the Koropokkuru were regaining consciousness, ‘it is not our decision. Our father would never listen to us.’ ‘Then you must make him listen,’ said Nipa reasonably. ‘I implore you.
