[Chapter Three: Sanctuary and Insight]です。

☆ Belton's Blog
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, The Stoning of Hazelbury reaches its climax today, and next
week a new on-line novel will be starting.

At least, I think it will...

As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, none of my remaining unpublished
novels are stored in my computer, so I either have the choice of retyping
one into the computer that is in the paper format or writing a completely
new story. After careful consideration I have decided to write a new novel
especially for this magazine, and the first chapter it is due to start from
next week's edition. There is one small problem; I haven't thought of
a story yet...

But, I still have a full week, so I promise you that I will work hard this week
and have something ready by next week. Once the story has been laid out,
all I have to do is type up the first chapter, so it should not be too hard a
task. To tell the truth, I have only completed the first four chapters of my
Gateway to Hell horror story, which is currently being serialized in the
多聴多読マガジン (see [What's New] above,) and we are already up to the
third chapter, so I'd better get working on that, too... :-)

		--------------------------

Speaking of the 多聴多読マガジン, a special edition has been released
ブック」 (long title...!!!) It's a very beautiful and colorful book introducing
a wide range of popular children's picture books, and I can thoroughly
reccommend it. It also contains interviews with lots of different people
on the books they loved as a child (including me, on page 150,) and I'm
sure it will prove extremely useful for reference purposes. Take a look
at it the next time you are in a bookstore.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

☆ cry wolf

- The Y2K problem turned out to be nothing more than agitators crying
 wolf.

- The environmentalists seem to be very worried about global warming,
but I am hoping they are just crying wolf.

☆ lone wolf

- Don’t bother inviting him to the party. He’s a lone wolf.
- It annoys me when he makes decisions without consulting the rest
of the project team. He really is a lone wolf.

☆ wolf in sheep's clothing

 clothing.

- Graham told me that he loved me, but he turned out to be a wolf in
 sheep’s clothing.

☆ as sly (cunning) as a fox

☆ Respectful Partnership

Two old men were packing their golf bags ready to leave for a
round at the golf club when one of them noticed a funeral
procession passing by. He paused, straightened his back and
removed his hat in a gesture of respect.
“That was very good of you, John,” said his partner, “I never
realized you were so respectful.”
“It’s the least I can do,” said John, “It would have been our
fortieth wedding anniversary next Tuesday.”

☆ A Load of Rubbish

An amateur football coach was worried that his team was not
showing signs of improvement, so he telephoned the manager
of the local professional team and asked him the secret of why
his side was so good? “That's easy,” said the pro manager,
“we practice every day against 11 dustbins.”
Two weeks later, the two men met in a pub, and the pro manager
asked the coach if the plan had worked. “I’m afraid not,” he replied,
“We decided to abandon the idea after the dustbins won 5-0.

----- The Stoning of Hazelbury: Part XXXXIIII (最終章) -----

The boys passed glances amongst each other cautiously. They
were not quite sure if this was good news or not. Should they
commiserate or congratulate? To them it sounded pretty good, for if Bean
was not coming back it looked like Wendhurst would stay in power. But
then again, would Grimple take the trouble to walk all the way over from
the main building just to tell them nothing had changed? They shifted
uncomfortably on their benches and looked back at Mr. Grimple
expectantly.
“I can see,” said the headmaster, “that you have no idea what I am
talking about, but it is quite simple really. As Mr. Bean has now formerly
parted from the staff role, I am at liberty to employ another coach.”
Wendhurst was on his feet in a trice.
“But, sir,” he blurted, and one might have noticed a trace of panic
in his voice. “That is not necessary. You saw us win on Saturday so you
know I have been doing my job. Another member of the staff would only
mean a larger pay-roll.”
“That is true, Wendhurst, but after watching Saturday’s game, I
think a coach would be advisable. No, no, don’t get me wrong. I am not
complaining about your ability. I thought your tactical play was
marvelous. All three of those goals amazed me with their ingenuity. But I
did notice a marked lack of stamina. It seems to me,“ said Mr. Grimple,
poking a playful finger at Wendhurst, “that you are a blackboard man,
but not a great one for the hard graft, young Wendhurst. However, if you
and the new coach work together, we can combine the talents of both and
be unbeatable.”
“But it will cost you a fortune to get a new coach down here. The
money is up in the cities, these days. And, of course, you’ll have to pay
their transportation, their moving fees, everything.”
Mr. Grimple tapped the side of his nose with a forefinger and
winked broadly.
“Ah, ha! That’s where you’re wrong. After reading the letter on
Saturday, I immediately got in touch with the labor exchange in town to
ask if they had anyone available, but at that time they hadn’t. This very
morning, however, I received a telephone call from the man in the
exchange, and he said that a friend of his--a games coach friend of
his--has recently become available and was on the lookout for work in
this area. I interviewed the man immediately by telephone, found him
perfectly satisfactory, and have taken him on.”
Mr. Grimple stood back and smiled serenely upon the boys
before him. He was thinking how lucky he was to have a tactical genius
and a man of action on the team. With such a combination, they could not
fail to win the Hampshire Schoolboys’ Soccer Championship. The boys
did not look too ecstatic, he noticed, but he put this down to loyalty to
Wendhurst and a reluctance to change horses in the middle of the stream.
“In fact,” he continued, “he should be here any minute.”
At this point, the door burst open and in stormed--Loose his
beard and hoary hair Stream’d like a meteor to the troubled air--a hairy
terraced house.
