The problem is that I have now exhausted the supply of novels I have on my computer, so whatever I use will have to be retyped. I still have a few that I wrote a long time ago on a typewriter, but all are pretty long and the job of retyping them into the computer will be very time- consuming. So, I have two options: 1) Get my wife to retype one (very tough negotiations needed...:-) 2) Write a new one directly into the computer. I'll let you know when I decide, but at the moment I am leaning towards writing a new one. I could set it in Japan and lower the level of the English so that it is easier for you all to read, which might be a good idea. Mmmm, I'll have to get my brain working... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ ワン・ポイント英語 ＜牛の比喩＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ 牛の比喩 ☆ until the cows come home 「長いあいだ」の意味。ふつうは、何かが達成されるまでいつまでも 待たなければならないという、ネガティブな意味で使われます。 牛たちは牛追いに導かれないかぎり、めったに小屋に戻って くることがありません。 - You’ll be waiting until the cows come home if you are expecting him to call you. 彼からの電話を待っているなら、永遠に待ちつづけることになるよ。 - You’ll have to wait until the cows come home if you want to make a profit on those shares. その株で儲けようと思ったら、いつまでも待たなくてはならないだろう。 ☆ bull in a china shop あまりに無骨または不器用で、周囲をめちゃくちゃにしてしまう 人に使います。壊れやすい瀬戸物の店の中に雄牛を放った 場合のように。 - My son is like a bull in a china shop when opening his presents on Christmas morning. クリスマスの朝にプレゼントをあけるとき、息子はあたりをぶっ散らかした。 - I never let my wife drive the car any more. The mother replied that her father had given her a baby. The girl immediately ran to her father and said, “Daddy, you know that baby you gave mummy? His head turned a bright crimson and his jaw hardened as he clenched his teeth. “Stone, you, you, you…” Words failed him. He raised bulging eyes up to meet those of the games coach, and with a shudder, fell into his chair. Stone, who was feeling that the world as he knew it had ceased to exist, edged towards the door. “Look here, Mr. Walters,” he said ingratiatingly, “I can explain everything. You see, I am in love with your daughter and want to marry her.” He could not have chosen worse words. Mr. Walters began spluttering and released his collar with trembling hands. He was conscious of a sudden desire to spill Stone’s blood all over the carpet for having soiled his beloved daughter with his odious advances and then expecting to insert himself into the family as a permanent member, but he must not, he told himself, resort to violence. He restrained himself with a great deal more ease than the observer might have imagined, but Mr. Walters was a practical man and had realized that although he might have the edge when it came to rock-like jaws, Stone undoubtedly walked away with the biscuit when it came to rock-like muscles. The sight of Stone’s blood on the carpet would, no doubt, do wonders for his indigestion and erase the headache he felt coming on, but he recoiled from the thought of the sight of his own blood doing the same for Stone. Without taking his eyes off Stone, he reached out a quivering hand, picked up the receiver of the telephone and pressed a button below the dial. “Hello?” he said, his voice strained, “Miss Jones? Make out a pay packet for a month’s wages for Mr. Stone in lieu of notice.
