Apparently not enough people had applied to fill the minimum limit. I'm not sure exactly how many people the minimum limit consisted of or how many people actually did apply, but if anybody on here applied and later received a cancellation, you have my deepest apologies... m(_ _)m ---------------------------------------- My younger son, Jamie (the artist,) has an event coming up next Saturday (May 30) at the Asahi Art Square building in Asakusa, Tokyo sponsored by Asahi Beer. It's in that building with the strange object on top, which most people in Tokyo call the ウ○コ・ビル...:-) The title is Hartism Vol.4, and it will be filmed for a late-night TV program by TV Asahi. In addition to an appearance by the comedy duo Love Drive and various musical performances, Jamie will also be doing a live painting performance. I am the designated 足君... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ ワン・ポイント英語 ＜「 やっぱり」は英語でこう言うの＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ やはり ／ やっぱり 日本語でたびたび使われるこれらの語は、I suppose、I guessなど と訳されることが多いようです。状況によってはこれがうまくあてはまる こともありますが、ほかの語やフレーズを使うこともあります。 ☆ 状況 #1: ジョンは家主から、前月の家賃が未払いであるという手紙を受け 取りました。メアリにたずねてみると、まちがいなく払ったとのこと。 しかしメアリが少々おっちょこちょいで忘れっぽいのは承知している ので、通帳を調べて見るようにと言いました。メアリは自信たっぷりに 通帳の文字を指で追っていたのですが、だんだん自信を失い、 ばつの悪そうな顔でジョンを見上げました。ジョンは腹を立てて首 を横に振り、「やっぱりな」と言いました。英語ならば次のように言う でしょう。 - I might have known. 気がつくべきだった - Typical! またかよ！ - Trust you! こんなことじゃないかと思ったよ - How could you? どうしてこんなことができたんだ？／ふつうはこんなことしないよな - What’s the matter with you? いったいどうしたっていうんだ？ 注：ここで使っている語は、「さすが」の項の状況 #4で使った語とよく 似ています。最初の3つは、相手の行動パターンがいつも同じである ことを、比較的穏やかな調子で述べたフレーズですが、4つ目と5つ目 にはもう少し怒りがこもっています。英語では、修辞疑問文（答えを必要 としない疑問文）の形で怒りを表すことがよくあります。 ☆ 状況 #2: 「今日は上司に昇給を願いでるつもりだ」とジョンはメアリに言いました。 メアリは「あまり期待しないほうがいいわよ」と言いつつも、心の中では うまくいくようにと願いました。ところが夕方、ジョンはがっくりとして帰って きました。できるだけのことはしたものの、上司に却下されてしまったの です。「やっぱりだめだったよ」。英語ならばジョンは次のように言うでしょう。 - As I expected… 思っていたとおり…… - As I thought… 考えていたとおり…… - Unsurprisingly… 驚くことではないけれど……／当然と言えば当然だが…… - Although it comes as no surprise… べつに驚きはしないけれど…… メアリはジョンに同情のまなざしを向け、「やっぱりね」と言いました。英語では 次のように言うでしょう。 - I thought so. そうだろうと思った - I expected so. そんなことだろうと思ってたわ - I guessed that. 予想はしてたわ - I might have known. 覚悟しておけばよかった - I might have guessed. 予測しておけばよかった - That’s no surprise. べつに驚かないわ - That comes as no surprise. べつに驚きはしないわ 注：どのフレーズもがっかりした調子で口にされることでしょう。期待はして いなかったけれど、それでもやっぱりがっかりした、というニュアンスです。 ここでは好ましくない状況があげられていますが、何かいいことがあった 場合も、上記のフレーズを使うことができます。もちろん、その場合は 楽しげな調子になるはずですね。 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ Potluck − ＜Why? Part IV＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ Why? - Why do people go to the bother and expense of getting a drivers’ license when they only intend to be a ‘paper driver’? 何故、どうせペーパードライバーになる人がわざわざ労力とお金を かけてまでして免許をとるの？ - Why are the long seats on trains slightly smaller than the space required to seat the stipulated number of people? 何故、電車のロングシート（長手の方向に並んでいる座席）は規定の 人数が腰掛けるのに必要なスペースよりやや狭くなっているの？ - Why do sports newspapers concentrate only on the famous players and ignore the excellent plays by other players? 何故、スポーツ紙は有名な選手のみに注目し、他の選手による優れた プレイを無視するの？ - Why is everybody interested in everybody else’s blood type? 何故、誰もが他人の血液型に興味があるの？ - Why do people act confident when with friends, but embarrassed when alone? 何故、人は友達と一緒の時は自信を持って物事を行うのに、単独でいる とまごついてしまうの？ - Yakisoba pan? Realizing that his chance was near at hand, he stood still with one foot on the ball while the wen buzzed around like a matchstick in a wind tunnel and waited for the right moment. Unfortunately, Logan underestimated the turn of speed of which Arnolds was capable, and as he took his foot off the ball to let him have it, Arnolds had leapt forward and take possession of the orb. Seeing his hopes of exterminating Arnolds begin to slip away, Logan lashed out with a steam-hammer-like foot in panic. He missed Arnolds, for the boy had just tripped over a rather stout blade of grass, by a fraction of an inch, but he didn’t miss the ball. It parted company with Logan’s foot traveling at the same velocity as a recently-fired 105mm shell, and screamed through the air towards Greenhurst’s goal like a banshee bent on assassination. Those of the wiser boys in its path flattened themselves to the ground with hands over ears, while other scattered to avoid being sucked into its vortex. The ball, therefore, met with no resistance during its flight towards the goal, and most witnesses would have vouched that the resistance that it finally did come up against was very meager resistance indeed. Namely, the goalkeeper. It caught him in the midriff and knocked him back against the net, where he slid to the ground with a dazed expression on his face and the thought that this was the last game of soccer he would ever participate in.
