I couldn't believe it! It's not a very large park, but it had lots of trees and was beautifully peaceful and calm. I would visit it with my dog every now and then, and we'd sit on one of the benches and enjoy the scenery. Now, apart from a small verge of grass approximately one meter wide around the edge, it is all asphalt and extremely ugly. Absolutely unforgivable...!!! ---------------------------------------- I wrote the above to prove a point. There was a newspaper article last week that stated that people living in the UK are the most miserable in Europe. Apparently, Brits spend about ten hours every week complaining, which is substantially more than other European nationalities. I therefore thought I needed to complain about something to prove I was British...:-) And, the item that British people complain about the most is.... Yes, you guessed it. The weather...!!! (Speaking of which, today is too cloudy, too cool and too miserable...:-) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ ワン・ポイント英語 ＜Useful Phrases: This and That＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ This and That 会話で何かを曖昧にしておきたいとき、あるいは詳しく述べる必要が ないとき、このふたつの語はとても便利です。それまでの会話の流れ によって、ニュートラルにもポジティブにもネガティブにも使えます。 ☆ 状況1: ある顧客が数か月ぶりにジョンを訪ねてきました。顔なじみのこの顧客 から「最近はどんな具合ですか」とたずねられ、ジョンは答えました。 - A little bit of this, a little bit of that. あれやこれやといったところですね。 - This and that. Nothing too important. まあ、いろいろですが、これといった大きなことは何もありませんね。 注：久しぶりに会った相手に最近の状況をたずねるのはよくあることですが、 詳しく聞きたいからというよりは、単なる社交辞令の場合がほとんどです。 このような質問をされたら、細かく説明するよりも、thisとthatを使って答える といいでしょう。thisとthatを使った表現には、「これといって変わったことは ない」というニュアンスがあります。もしも何か相手が興味を持ちそうなことが あれば、詳しい情報をつけ加えましょう。以下はその例です。 - Well, I bought a new car, but otherwise just this and that. そうですね、実は新しい車を買ったんです。でもあとは別にどうってこと ないですね。 - My son got married. Apart from that, just this and that. 息子が結婚したんです。でもそれ以外は、取り立てて言うほどのことは ありません。 ☆ 状況2: ジョンは仕事のあとで同僚たちと一杯飲みながら、入社したばかりのころの 話をしています。経理部の山本学という同僚が、入社したてのころ雑用 ばかりさせられたという話をしました。 - All I ever heard was “Yamamoto this, Yamamoto that.” 言われることといったら、「山本、これをしろ」「山本、あれをしろ」ってこと ばかりだった。 - From morning till night it was “Yamamoto do this, Yamamoto do that.” 朝から晩まで「山本、これをしろ」「山本、あれをしろ」という具合だった。 注：会話の流れから、ここではthisとthatがネガティブに使われ、次々と 言いつけられた命令を指しているのがわかります。 ☆ 状況3: 夕食のときにケイコは、子どものころ、両親が妹のマユミばかり贔屓していた という話をジョンに聞かせました。「両親にはマユミが非の打ちどころのない 子に見えたらしくて、私はいつも両親から『マユミのようにしなさい』と言われ ていたの」とケイコはぼやきました。 - No matter what I did, it was always “Mayumi this, Mayumi that.” 私が何をしても、いつだって「マユミならこうする」「マユミならああする」って 言われたの。 - Even if I did something good, it was “Mayumi this, Mayumi that.” もし私がいいことをしたとしても、「マユミならこうする」「マユミならああする」って 言われたの。 注：thisとthatの意味は、ここでも会話の流れからつかまなければなりません。 「両親にはマユミが非の打ちどころのない子に見えたらしくて」と述べられて いることから、ここのthisとthatは、両親が繰り返し口にしていた自慢話である ことがわかります。 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ Potluck − ＜Why? Owing to his team and coach’s coolness at his goal, Arnolds had started to wander nearer to his admirers--namely the schoolboys in the enclosure and the headmaster--and bask in the admiration that they so generously showered upon him. It didn’t take much to make him realize that he was a modern-day Nobby Stiles, and the ‘Atta boy! Go get ’um!’ from Mr. Walters fired up inside him the spirit known by warriors throughout the ages upon hearing the sound of the war bugles. Lack of skill, however, prevented daring forays beneath the feet of Wendhurst and Co. to amount to much, but they did have an indubitable nuisance value. One moment he was whizzing around the legs of one player like a Dervish, the next haring across the pitch to inflict his unwanted company around the ankles of another. He was so exasperating in his eagerness to stick to the ball like manure to a shovel that a mosquito could have learnt a few tricks. In fact, it was due to the imbecilic enthusiasm of Arnolds that clinched the game for Hazelbury. With only five minutes left to play, most people on the field had had to put up with Arnolds darting around like an incensed shrimp for eighteen minutes, and a good percentage of these people were mightily fed-up, not least of all Ben Logan, who had not only had this shrimp-like quality of Arnolds thrust upon him every time he had the ball, but also had to suffer the indignity of once having lost the ball to him. With this in mind, the wise observer, tempering his verdict with fairness, would not be too outraged to learn that Ben Logan’s mind had wandered slightly from the game in hand and had turned to an all-consuming yearning to score a goal with Arnolds. The setting up of this was simplicity itself, for all Logan had to do was gain possession of the ball and Arnolds came with it at no extra charge.
