Well, it's been a nice relaxing day in the Belton household today. I did a bit of work this morning after taking the dog for a walk, and this afternoon my wife and I took a leisurely walk around to the local flower center to buy some flowers for the balcony. My wife, of course, left her purse at home and had to return for it. This is the third time in the past two weeks that she has left home without her purse. Usually she doesn't notice until she reaches the station, and I then have to stop work and go and deliver it, but today she noticed relatively early, so it was not too much of a problem (She must be getting old...:-) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ ワン・ポイント英語 ＜[副詞的接続詞]を使った例文＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ [副詞的接続詞]を使った例文 副詞的接続詞は等位接続詞と同じく、対等の関係にある節と節をつなぐ 働きをしますが、情報を補足するために用いるという点では、従属接続詞 と同じです。等位接続詞との外見上のおもな違いは、ふたつの節のあいだ にセミコロン（；）を打つことです。 - My telephone was out of order; [accordingly] it was impossible to contact you. うちの電話が故障した。そんなわけで、あなたと連絡が取れなかった - I don’t like caviar; [besides] it is too expensive. わたしはキャビアが好きではない。そのうえ値段が高すぎる - I left my umbrella at home; [consequently] I got wet in the rain. 傘を家に置いてきた。そのため雨にぬれてしまった - I do not like people who are rude; [furthermore] I will not tolerate them. わたしは無礼な人が好きではない。それどころか我慢がならない - She got up late this morning; [hence] she missed the meeting. 彼女は今朝、寝坊した。それでミーティングに出られなかったのだ - I don’t like tomatoes in salads; [however] I love them in pizza. サラダに入ったトマトは嫌い。それなのにピザに入ったトマトは好き - I take at least one business trip every month; [likewise] everybody in my department does. わたしは毎月、少なくとも1度は出張する。同じように、わたしの部署の 人もみな1度は出かける - These shoes are far too expensive for me; [moreover] I don’t like the color. この靴はわたしには値段が高すぎる。それに色が気に入らない - She speaks about him all the time; [so] we think they are dating. 彼女はいつも彼のことを話している。だからふたりはつきあっているの ではないかと思う - I am not looking forward to tomorrow’s meeting; [nevertheless] I will be there. あしたのミーティングは気が進まない。それでもやはり出席するだろう - I have an appointment with the dentist tomorrow; [therefore] I will be leaving the office early. あしたは歯医者に予約を入れてある。だから早めにオフィスを出ることになるだろう - I can’t understand why he likes playing soccer so much; [still] I suppose that is his decision. 彼がなぜあんなにサッカーが好きなのか、わたしには理解できない。 とはいえ、それが彼の決断なのだろう - We had a power-cut this morning; [thus] my train was delayed. 今朝、停電があった。そんなわけでわたしの乗った電車が遅れた ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ Potluck − ＜Why? The snag that Hazelbury most frequently came up against was their inability to pass with any great accuracy. The first try at this excellent tactic came off Smell Miles, but went high for a throw-in. The opposition, always ready to lend a helping hand, deposited the ball at the feet of Mike Roland, who tried a tricky bit of footwork, kicked himself in the shin, sat down with a thump and sent the ball rolling gently out of play again. The next throw-in bounced off Jimmy Bates’ head, rebounded off Archie Heath’s shoulder, and was finally controlled by Wendhurst, who flicked it across to Logan. Logan finally had the ball. He looked up and saw the Greenhurst goalie cowering timidly behind one of the goal posts and set off like a bull that had seen the red cape. He hadn’t gone two yards before he realized that something was missing, and flashing a curious glance down at his feet, it was borne upon him that the thing he lacked was the ball. Casting startled eyes about him, he perceived a chinless, spectacled object making a wild dash towards his goal and, with a roar, he leapt after it. But it was too late. Hilary Arnolds, the new center forward, surprised himself enormously with his instant decision to de-ball the big bloke. Football was not a game he was familiar with, but he roughly understood that the object of the whole thing was to stick the ball in the net opposite to the side from which your team had kicked off. Having been standing around idle for several minutes examining a small daisy that had had the courage to raise its head on the pitch, it came as a small surprise to note that the big fellow not three yards from him had the ball. When this bloke looked up at the goal in the background, Arnolds, remembering the braveness of the daisy, launched himself at this ball and gently removed it from his clutches. He then looked around for some help, but seeing none, decided to have a go at the net himself. He kicked the ball and it rolled forward. He ran after it and kicked it a second time. Again it rolled forward. He began to enjoy himself. Soccer was not so difficult after all. Admittedly, the ball usually went off at a forty-five degree angle to the place he wanted it to go, but by overcompensation, he was able to work it quite swiftly up field. The other members of the game watched him in surprise. Nobody was particularly worried, for the Hazelbury team knew that he was, for all intents and purposes, on their side and would no doubt pass the ball gently to the Blob after this little show to placate the spectators, and Greenhurst’s team knew him for the glump he was and that he couldn’t score a goal if he were the only man on the field.
