Poor guy! If I asked every man I know, I'm sure every one would say that they have had, at least once in their life, drunk a little too much and done something embarassing. I, personally, have several embarassing stories...:-) And, considering the pressure poor Tsuyoshi has been under since the age of 13 to always be the "nice guy," I'm surprised that he didn't snap before. I really do wish that the companies that employed Tsuyoshi in their advertisements and TV commercials will reconsider and let him continue. After all, it's not as if he has committed a major crime; the guy just drank a little too much and momentarily lost control. I think it is sad that celebrities are not allowed to be normal people in the eyes of the media. Cut them some slack. Let them enjoy life like the rest of us... ------------------------------------- So, Golden Week is almost upon us, and the roads will fill up with traffic, particularly now that the ETC system allows cheaper travel. I will be staying at home for the holiday, but if anyone is traveling, I hope you have a wonderful time. And, don't forget to drive carefully...! Happy Golden Week, everybody...!!! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ ワン・ポイント英語 ＜[接続詞]を使った例文＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ [接続詞]を使った例文 - I have planned to meet John [after] the baseball game. 野球の試合後にジョンと会う計画を立てた - He wants to buy a car [although] he can’t really afford it. 彼は車を買いたがっている。本当はそんな余裕はないのだが - I need a new television [as] my old one has broken. 古いテレビが壊れたので、新しいテレビが必要だ - I have to go home now [because] it is getting late. もう時間が遅いので、家に帰らなければならない - She always cleans her teeth [before] going to bed. 彼女はいつも寝る前に歯を磨く - I can’t disturb him [for] he is too busy. 彼は忙しいので、邪魔をするわけにはいかない - I will tell you tomorrow [if] you call me. もし電話をくれれば、あした話します - I will consider signing the contract [once] I have read it. 読んでから契約書にサインするかどうか考えます - I had better wear a suit [since] the president will be there. 社長がそこにいるだろうから、スーツを着たほうがいい - I couldn’t hear him properly [so] asked him to speak up. 彼の話がよく聞こえなかったので、大きな声で話してくれるように頼んだ - His company is more prosperous [than] mine. 彼の会社はわたしの会社より羽振りがいい - She asked [that] we all keep quiet. 静かにするようにと彼女はわたしたちに言った - I had to work overtime [though] I didn’t want to. わたしは残業しなければならなかった。したくはなかったのだが - He will live at home [till] his mother gets better. 彼は母親の具合がよくなるまで実家に住む - I won’t leave the office [until] I hear from you. 連絡をいただくまで、わたしはオフィスを離れません - I should be there by midday [unless] the train is delayed. 列車が遅れなければ、正午までにはそこに着くだろう - I will take you out to dinner [when] I get paid. 給料をもらったら、ディナーにつれていってあげるよ - I am ready to leave [whenever] you are. 君さえ準備ができれば、僕はいつでも出かけられるよ - I parked my car [where] I can’t find it. わたしは見つけられなくなるような場所に車をとめてしまった - I prefer Italian food [whereas] Sheila prefers French food. シーラはフランス料理が好きだが、わたしはイタリア料理が好きだ - He takes his laptop computer [wherever] he goes. 彼はどこにでもノートパソコンを持っていく - My boss will decide [whether] we attend the seminar. わたしたちがセミナーに参加するかどうかは上司が決めるだろう - I had some coffee [while] she finished off her work. 彼女が仕事を片づけているあいだ、わたしはコーヒーを飲んだ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ Potluck − ＜有名な臨終のことば＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ 有名な臨終のことば - クリフォード・モーティマーは死の床で、なぜ怒っているのかとたずねられ、 こう答えた。「死ぬときはいつだって怒るのさ！」 (I’m always angry when I’m dying!) - 1879年に絞首刑となったイギリスの強盗・殺人犯チャールズ・ピースは、 絞首刑についてどう思うかとたずねられ、こう答えた。「天国への近道」 (A short cut to heaven.) - 1890年に死去したスコットランド人の科学者ジェイムズ・クロールは、生涯、 絶対禁酒を通した。死の床で酒を一杯どうかとすすめられて語った臨終 のことば。「ほんの少し飲むよ。今さら飲酒癖がつくはずもないからね」 (I’ll take a wee drop of that. I don’t think there’s much fear of me learning to drink now.) - 1905年に死去したイギリスの詩人アルフレッド・ウィリアムズが、妻に語った 臨終のことば。「これは、ぼくたちどちらにとっても悲劇になるな」 (My dear, this is going to be a tragedy for us both.) - 1716年に死去したイギリスの詩人ウィリアム・ワイチャーリーは、何か最後 に望むことは？と若妻にたずねられ、こう答えた。「望みはこれだけ――もう 年寄りとは結婚しないように」 (My dear, it is only this: you will never marry an old man again.) - 1946年、ネヴィル・ヒースは殺人罪で絞首刑に処された。最後に望んだの は一杯のウイスキーだったが、それを受け取ったとき、彼は言った。「ああ、 ダブルにしてくれたらよかったのに」 (Ah… you might make that a double.) - 1856年、ウィリアム・パーマーが絞首台に足を踏みだしたときの最後の ことば。「これ、安全なんだろうね？」 (Are you sure it’s safe?) - 1834年、イギリスの奇人ジャック・ミットンは、しゃっくりを止めようとして シャツに火をつけた。それによってミットンは焼死することになるが、 炎の中から聞こえてきた彼の最後のことばは「ああ、これでしゃっくり が止まった！」だった。 (Well, the hiccup is gone, by God!) - 1965年に死去したイギリスの最も有名な政治家・首相であるウィンストン・ チャーチル卿は、75歳の誕生日に次のように語ったという。「わたしは 創造主なる神と対面する覚悟はできている。神のほうでわたしと対面 するという試練に直面する覚悟ができているかどうかは、別の問題 だがね」 (I am ready to meet my Maker. Two such different demeanors in such close quarters would be difficult to find unless one were to give ten thousand pounds to one man and then boot his neighbor in the groin. Mr. Grimple was practically hopping up and down in his excitement, thinking that he had known his team would pull through and that the Hampshire Schoolboys’ Soccer Championship cup was as good as in the trophy cupboard, and Mr. Walters was draped despondently across his portion of the bench, composing his speech to the games coach, whom he intended to interview as soon as this pantomime was brought to a conclusion. Jerry Stone, his innards being alternately gnawed by frustration, remorse, relief, anger and embarrassment, tried to keep his eyes on a piece of turf two feet before him. He could feel the eyes of all those present boring red-hot holes into his body and was anticipating with trepidation the inquisition that would no doubt take place in the headmaster’s study after the game. He was feeling unusually sorry for himself and began to wonder if true love was really worth it. If love was as beautiful as was espoused in literature, would it place a man in such a situation where he had to jeopardize his reputation and career only for the unspoken promise of marriage from a girl who might change her mind should a man with moolah happen along? He longed for the match to restart again with a form of masochism that had its roots in his eagerness to see the farce finished. Not even the thought that his team could run rings around Hazelbury consoled him in the slightest. Risking the raising of his eyes, he caught the stony glare from Mr. Walters amidships, and settled back into a deeper depression. Oh, for ten minutes alone with Wendhurst… The second half started with a little more order than the first, for the rules of the game were slowing coming back to the Hazelbury team. The pep talk that Wendhurst had given them in the changing room had added that little extra spark of vigor that is necessary for sportsmen in any shape or form.
