What a beautiful city! It was probably because we went just before the main cherry blossom season, but there were no crowds and the buses moved easily through the streets without bother. And, the layout of the city was so easy to understand. I get lost in Tokyo all the time, but it would be difficult to get lost in Kyoto. Unfortunately it rained most of the time, but it wasn't very heavy and it also added a different sort of beauty to the nature, which I found very pleasant. Hey, I'm British! I like the rain...:-) We spent three days visiting all of the main temples, and I was especially impressed with Kinkaku-ji and Ninna-ji. I was also completely captivated by the Nijo Castle, and I came away with the wonderful feeling of having come into direct contact with Japan's history, traditions and culture. I'm thinking of changing the floorboards in my house to 鴬張り...:-) We also visited some wonderful restaurants. On the first night we went to a restaurant about ten minutes walk from Gion, and in addition to the incredible food, it also had a huge inner garden with a small lake and waterfall, which we were allowed to wander around. To tell the truth, I'm not much of a sightseer. Usually when we go on vacation, I refuse to go on sightseeing tours; preferring to relax in my own way. But, Kyoto was different. I could have spent a month there wandering around the temples and backstreets from morning to night without getting tired, and I really am looking forward to my next visit. Thank you, Kyoto...!!! nice(よい)、 wonderful(すばらしい)、beautiful(美しい)、delicious(おいしい)、 great(とびきりの)などの代わりとして、幅広く使われます。 - He bought a lovely car. - She has a lovely child. - We stayed in a lovely hotel. - The weather is lovely today. - Your dress is a lovely colour. - This apple pie is lovely. - We had lunch in a lovely French restaurant. - I went for a lovely walk in the park. - How is your dinner? It illuminated the soccer pitch, the goal posts, the four-hundred and sixty-member audience that had turned out for the match, the changing room, the refreshment tent, and a fat toad that was toasting its horny back in ecstasy on the gravel drive. But, despite this beautiful sunshine, a cloud seemed to hang over the fungoid countenance of Jerry Stone, for on this face a look of burning fury and self-humiliation was ingrained. He was sitting gloomily on the manager’s bench, seeking fit words to paint the blackest face of woe and looking about suspiciously as if expecting the finger of accusation to be pointed at him at any moment. He looked over to the schoolboys’ enclosure behind the goal and caught the censorious eye of Weeks, the star center forward whom he had replaced with a half-pint version of Mickey Rooney who had only heard of soccer by hearsay. Noting the venom in this eye, he quickly averted his gaze, like a man who has inadvertently stumbled upon a female squatting behind a bush. He felt--although owing to the whiskers, others could not see--his face flush bright red with the embarrassment of it all. That glare of Weeks’ would haunt him for the rest of his life. He cast his mind back miserably to the day of Wendhurst’s visit when he had walked into the changing room with leaden steps, and the conversation that had taken place leapt into his thoughts as if mocking him with its clarity. “Right, boys, listen and listen well. Owing to school politics of which you will never mention to another soul on pain of death, you will lose Saturday’s game.” A few nervous laughs had gone up at this point as the boys waited for the punchline of Stoney’s joke. “Weeks, do you intend to do your best next Saturday?” “But of course, sir.” “You’re off the team! Meader, do you intend to win on Saturday?” “If it is within my power, sir.” “You’re off the team! Parkins, what will you do?” “Lose, sir.” “Good! Burke?” “Try for a defeat, sir.” “Excellent! Grant?” Etc., etc., etc…
