  Asahi Weekly
[Overcoming the Hurdles to Reading
  English Literature]です。

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
☆ Belton's Blog
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I usually compose this magazine on a Saturday night in my study
with just the desk lamp on and a glass of whisky at my side. Today,
however, is Tuesday, and it feels a little strange writing something
that will be read so far in the future. That probably sounds strange
from a guy who has to wait several months at the very least for his
books to be published, but the mail magazine gives me the feeling
of speaking to you all in the real time. In the same way that I have
no interest in reading last week's newspaper, I sort of get the
feeling that nobody would want to read this if the news is old.

Okay, so I'm weird. I'll admit that...:-)

The reason that I'm writing this on Tuesday is because I'm going
down to Kyoto on Thursday morning and won't return home in
time to issue the magazine by 06:00 on Sunday morning, which is
its regular time for going out. And the reason for going to Kyoto?
Well, it's my wedding anniversary on March 17th (St. Patrick's
Day!!!) and every year we celebrate this with some friends who
also have their anniversary in March. Usually we just go to a
restaurant and get drunk, but this year is our friends' 30th
anniversary, which is a sort of special, so we thought we'd visit
Kyoto and get drunk there instead...:-)

So, if anybody is near Kiyomizu-dera at approximately three
o'clock on Thursday afternoon and sees a group of three Japanese
people and one Englishman looking very happy but not walking
very straight, then please come over and say "hello!"

Whoops! Hang on! I guess that's impossible, since you won't get
to read this until Sunday morning at the earliest.

Oh, well. Maybe next time...

	---------------------------------------

Having read the above, you may have formed a few questions in
your mind, so I'll answer them here:

Q: Why do you only use the desk lamp?

A: Well, I really like dark rooms. My study is the only room in the
house in which I smoke, and usually I don't even bother turning
on the light when I have a cigarette at night. I find the dark
very comforting and much prefer darker rooms to well-lit rooms.
When I work at night, I keep the main light off and just use the
desk lamp. It creates a wonderful atmosphere in my study.

Q: What anniversary will you be celebrating?

A: Our 34th. We were married in 1975.

Q: What about the whisky?

A: Oh, yes! It's right here beside me...:-)

Useful Phrases: Showing / Guess what...?>
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

★ showing

- An exhibition of Van Gogh paintings is showing at the Tate Gallery.

- The new Tom Cruise film is showing at the local cinema.

- The new Broadway hit musical is showing in the West End.

- Her favourite rock band is playing at Wembley Stadium next week.

- The London Philharmonic Orchestra is going to play a charity concert.

- I would love to hear one of the great tenors play live.

★ Guess what...?

ふつうならWhat do you think…? Guess what…?

- Guess what’s on the television tonight?

 I have no idea. What?

- Guess what we are having for dinner tonight?

 Steak?

 No, a casserole. Your favourite!

- Guess who telephoned me today?

 I give up. Who?

----- The Stoning of Hazelbury: Part XXIX -----

Stone sank deflated onto his chair and went into the buried head
and ruffled hair routine for a second time. Wendhurst sipped his tea and
rested his eyes compassionately on the broken man before him.
“There, there,” he said soothingly, “Don’t take it so hard. It’ll all
be over and you’ll have the photographs by this time next week. Buck up,
there’s a good little soldier.”
“Don’t you realize that I’m going to grind you into a paste and
smear you all over Hampshire just as soon as those snaps are in my
possession? No, I don’t think I’ll get them back, somehow.”
“You are wrong, old walnut. You have the word of a gentleman.”
	“A what?”
“A gentleman,” insisted Wendhurst. “You’ll have those pics by
Thursday at the latest. I’m relying on the fact that thirteen anonymous
phone calls by thirteen different voices to your headmaster should
convince even him that strange things were afoot to prevent you from
starting in on this unpleasant smearing you speak of. The Sword of
Damocles, you might say.”
“And how often will the lower the sword and hold it to my throat
again? Every second month, I shouldn’t wonder.”
“No, I assure you that the only thing we want from you is a
victory next Saturday. You can rest easy on that score.”
“Rest easy? Rest easy?” Are you out of your mind? How the hell
can I rest easy when I know that thirteen young thugs have the key to my
getting the elbow?”
“Twelve, actually, Stoney, old chimp. We thought it prudent to
keep the Blob out of the picture for the time being as he seems to be
bearing a grudge against you.”
	“What’s a blob?”
“No a blob, Stoney, old man. The Blob. I wish you’d pay attention.
The Blob is that unsightly mass of human flesh to whose gluteus maximus
you repeatedly introduced your boot the other night.”
“The little fella with the gut?”
“An excellent description, Stoney. You certainly do have a way
with words. However, to change the subject onto more topical lines, do
we have a deal or not?”
	“!*#%!*\#!”
“Stoney, old woodlice! I am shocked! A simple ‘yes’ would suffice
without you introducing such language. Does Gretel know you use these
words?”
With the sigh of a man restraining himself from spilling blood,
Stone looked up into Wendhurst’s face.
“Seems to me that I don’t have too much choice. You’ve got me
bent over a barrel, and, by God, I wish you were inside it without an
umbrella. But I’ll tell you this, sonny boy. One of these days I’m going to
get my own back, and when I do, you are going to find out exactly what
the phrase ‘unadulterated agony’ means.
Wendhurst pushed back his chair and ambled over to the door.
“I shall take that as ascension to the proposition I have put before
you, and wish you a good day, Stoney, old weasel. See you at the match.”
With this, Wendhurst opened the door and sauntered out, leaving
behind a man in whose dreams murder was to feature for the next few
nights.
