Rowling)]です。 また、Vol.13号から新たに[Gateway to Hell]という６回にわたる連載 ホラー・ファンタジー小説が始まります。 今回は [Chapter One: A Strange Encounter]です。 ☆ 4月から、毎月第４週目の日曜日に「多読」をテーマにした連載記事が Asahi Weeklyに載ることになりました。 第１回目(４月２６日）のテーマは[Overcoming the Hurdles to Reading English Literature]です。 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ Belton's Blog ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- My elder son, Shane, is the designer and administrator of my web site via his company Blueprint (http://www.blue-p.org/), and he is currently working on a completely new design for the entire site. He sent me the initial draft of the top page yesterday, and it is really very attractive. This design will include more information and contents than the current site, and I am really looking forward to it. It will probably take a few weeks to complete it, so I'll let you know when it cutover is scheduled at a later date. ------------------------------------------ For some reason that I can never explain, March always seems to be a very busy month for me socially. We tend to get quite a few visitors from both Japan and abroad, and there are lots of invitations to dinner parties and other similar events. This year is no exception, and my schedule is pretty full for the entire month. I have even had to refuse a couple of invitations because they overlap with something else. And next week, my wife and I will be visiting Kyoto for three days with some friends for a brief spring holiday, which I'm looking forward to very much. My wife is out drinking with her tennis friends at this very moment in Shinbashi, actually. She telephoned about ten minutes ago to find out the score of the WBC tournament, and was delighted to hear that Japan were winning 11-2 at the top of the fifth inning. Whoops! She just phoned again... The score is still 11-2, though. I think it is going to be a busy night for telephone calls...:-) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ ワン・ポイント英語 ＜うらやましい＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ うらやましい 辞書によれば、「うらやましい」にあたる英語はenvyとなっています。たしかに この語が使える場合もありますが、どちらかといえば、強調点を話し手の感情 から相手の幸運に移し変えた表現を使うことが多いようです。 状況 #1: メアリは友人から電話をもらいました。彼女はくじで10万円当てたというのです。 メアリはそれを聞いて喜び、「うらやましいわ」と言いました。英語ではこう言う でしょう。 - That’s wonderful! すごいわね！ - You’re so lucky! ラッキーね！ - You lucky devil! すごくラッキーね！ - How lucky can you get? なんて運がいいの - I wish I were you. 私があなただったらよかったのに 注：英語では、相手をうらやむというニュアンスのままで会話を自然に進めること は不可能です。このような場合には、ポジティブな感想を述べるか（“That’s wonderful.” “That’s fantastic.” “That’s great.” など）、相手の幸運に ついて何かコメントするのが一般的です。最後の例文にあるように “I wish I were you.”と言うこともありますが、ほかの例ほどには使われません。 状況 #2: ある金曜日の晩、ジョンは同僚を家に連れてきました。彼のことを会社でも ピカ一の営業マンだとメアリに紹介したあと、ジョンは「その営業成績といったら うらやましいほどなんだ」とつけ足しました。英語では次のように言うでしょう。 - His sales figures are absolutely amazing. 彼の営業成績は本当にすごいんだ - He has an enviable sales record. 彼はうらやましいほどの営業成績なんだ - He is in the happy position of having a great sales record. 彼は立派な営業成績を誇っているんだ - Everybody is jealous of his sales record. 誰もが彼の営業成績をうらやましく思っている 注：この状況ならば、2つ目と4つ目の例文にあるように、「うらやましい」の 正しいニュアンスをそのまま英語にして使うことができます。とはいえ、amazing、 incredible、greatなどの語を使うことのほうが多いようです。 状況 #3: ジョンは昔からの友人とバーで飲んでいます。友人は買ったばかりの新しい スポーツカーの話をし、「うらやましいだろう」と言ってジョンにその写真を 見せました。英語ならば次のように言うでしょう。 - Eat your heart out. くやしいだろう - This will turn you green with envy. これを見たらうらやましくてしかたがないだろう - This will make you jealous. これを見たらうらやましくなるだろう - How about that, then? どうだ、これ？ 注：この状況では、最初の2つの例が最もよく使われます。最後の例文には 「うらやましい」のニュアンスが含まれず、「どうだ、まいったか」と同じような、 自慢気なせりふです。最初の例文のeat your heart outは、とてもよく 使われるイディオム。自慢を聞かされた相手は、嫉妬のあまり、自分の 心臓を内側から食べつくしてしまうというのです。2つ目の例文のgreen は、英語で「嫉妬」を表す色とされています。 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☆ Potluck − ＜女性よりも犬の方が一緒に住みやすい理由 Part I＞ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ★ Why Dogs are Easier to Live with than Women -- Part I 女性よりも犬の方が一緒に住みやすい理由 Part I 1. The later you are, the more excited dogs are to see you. 犬は主人の帰りが遅くなればなるほど喜んで迎えてくれる。 2. Dogs will forgive you for playing with other dogs. 犬は主人が他の犬と遊んでも許してくれる。 3. If a dog is gorgeous, other dogs don't hate it. 凄く魅力的な犬がいても、他の犬はその犬をひどく嫌ったりしない。 4. Dogs don't notice if you call them by another dog's name. 犬はもし主人が他の犬の名前を呼んでしまっても、気が付かない。 5. Dogs prefer it if you don't buy them clothes. 犬はどちらかと言うと、主人が洋服を買ってあげない方を好む。 6. Dogs like it if you leave lots of things on the floor. 犬は主人が床にいっぱい物を置きっぱなしにしている方が好き。 7. A dog's parents never visit. 犬の両親は絶対尋ねて来ない。 8. Dogs don't spend forty minutes in the shower. 犬はシャワーに時間を４０分もかけない。 9. Dogs would rather have cookies than diamonds. 犬はダイアモンドよりクッキーの方を欲しがる。 10. Dogs prefer left-over bones to French cuisine. 犬はフランス料理よりも食べ残しの骨の方を好む。 11. Dogs never want to return home to check if they left the gas on. 犬はガスの火を消したかどうかを確かめに家へ戻りたがることは絶対に無い。 12. Dogs can't talk. 犬は喋ることができない。 13. Dogs are never suspicious when you receive mail on your cell phone. 犬は主人の携帯にメールが届いても、決して疑ったりしない。 14. Dogs are ready to leave the house in less than one second. 犬は１秒以内に家を出ることができる。 15. He was enjoying himself now and was trying to squeeze as much juice out of the lemon as possible. “Because, I might get angry. And, if I get angry, it is only a matter of time before Mr. Walters gets angry. That’s right. Sit down. Go on, don’t mind me. Bury your head in your hands and ruffle your hair a bit. I shan’t mind.” Jerry Stone did as he was bid. He buried and ruffled for what seemed to him to be an age. His mind digested the data available and tried its hardest to come up with a solution, but short of murder, he could think of nothing… That’s it! Murder! “And it might interest you to know, Stoney, old wart,” said Wendhurst, extinguishing his cigarette amongst the aspidistra, “That if I’m not back at Hazelbury by nine o’clock, the photographs will be conveyed to Walters, so if you’re thinking of giving me the chop and hiding the body beneath the floorboards, you’d best reconsider.” Jerry Stone uttered a sigh and moodily began to draw symmetrical patterns in a tea slop. “All right,” he said eventually, “What do you want?” Wendhurst pushed himself off the Welsh dresser and sat down at the table. Having poured himself a cup of tea and lit another cigarette, he placed his feet on the table and viewed Stone benevolently. “Music to my ears, Stoney, old sport. Absolute music. I knew you’d come around sooner or later, and doesn’t it feel nice to speak in soft tones for a change, instead of barking like an asthmatic walrus? Bad for you, old chap. Thickens the vocal cords.” “I like ‘em thick.” “And so you might, old soul, but other people don’t like you with them thick. Grates upon the nerves, don’t you know?” “Look ,speak up and get out, will you? Don’t push me too far or we’ll both be sorry.” “Quite, quite, quite. Well, there is not much to it, really.
