On Friday, my son, Jamie, my translator, Junko Watanabe, and I
visited the exhibition of illustrations for the 『ハリー・ポッターと
不思議の国イギリス』 exhibition at the Junku-do bookstore in
Ikebukuro to pay our respects to the person in charge. A few
people were studiously examining the drawings while we were
there, and I was also extremely gratified to find a lot of my other
books on the bookshelves. The drawings are lined up along the
wall on the 8th floor in a very prominent position, and looked very
impressive indeed.

After this, we all went to the CosmoPier office in Shinjuku for a
launch party for this book and the new 『イギリス英語で聞く「ハリー・
ポッターと不思議の国イギリス」』 book, which we all saw for the
first time. It was a great party with champagne, beer, wine and
some very strong Chinese liquor (45% alcohol!), and all of the
CosmoPier staff attended. The party broke up about 23:00, and
Jamie and I arrived home at about 01:30, where we had another
whiskey before bed...:-)

I'll post some photographs of the exhibition and party on my web
site when I find the time.

Pigeon Update: Unfortunately, the pigeon's nest outside my
bedroom window was raided by a snake yesterday. At least, I
believe it was a snake. When we woke up this morning the eggs
had gone, and as there is no sign of any broken eggshell anywhere,
I presume the culprit it was a snake. The mother pigeon came back
a few times to check the nest, but eventually flew off and hasn't
been back since.

Sad...

☆ ワン・ポイント英語＜いらいら＞
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

★ いらいら

　最も近いのは、おそらくirritableという語でしょう。しかし「いらいら」という
語が使われるすべての場面でirritableが使えるわけではありません。たいてい
はnervous、bad temper、impatientなどのほうが、より自然にあてはまるようです。

☆ 状況 #1:

　メアリとジョンはコンサートのチケットを持っています。大好きな歌手のコンサート
なので、メアリはとても楽しみにしていたのですが、駅に着いてみると、電車が
遅れているようです。電車が来ないまま時間だけが過ぎ、メアリはプラットホーム
を行ったり来たりしはじめました。そしてジョンに愚痴をこぼします。「まったく、
いらいらしちゃう」。英語ならば次のように言うでしょう。

- I’m getting impatient.
　いい加減にしてほしいわ

- My patience is wearing thin.
　今にもキレそう

- This is making me nervy.
　いらいらしちゃう

- This is making me jittery.
　いらいらしちゃう

- This is getting me on edge.
　いらいらしちゃう

- This is getting on my nerves.
　いらいらしちゃう

- I can feel my temper building.
　かっかとしてきちゃうわ

注：この状況は「イヤになっちゃう」の状況 #2とほとんど同じ。違いといえば、
メアリが直接、駅員に苦情を言うのではなく、ジョンに愚痴をこぼしている
という点です。したがってメアリの使う言葉も違ってきます。

☆ 状況 #2:

　ジョンと同僚たちは、何にいちばんいらだつかという話をしています。話す
順番がまわってくると、ジョンはいろいろと考えた末、「黒板を爪でひっかく
音がいちばんいらいらする」と答えました。英語の場合は次のように言うでしょう。

- Fingernails on blackboards put my teeth on edge.
　黒板を爪でひっかく音を聞くと不快になる

- I can’t stand the sound of fingernails scratching blackboards.
　黒板を爪でひっかく音には耐えられない

- The sound of fingernails scratching blackboards put my nerves on edge.
　黒板を爪でひっかく音は神経にさわる

- The sound of fingernails on blackboards makes me jittery.
　黒板を爪でひっかく音は癇にさわる

注：これは世界中で嫌われている音ですね。あの音の不快さを最もよく表している
フレーズは、おそらくteeth on edgeとnerves on edgeでしょう。あとの2つは
「いらいら」のニュアンスを完全に表しているとは言えませんが、それでもやっぱり
こんなときに使われます。

☆ combs　櫛

- To drop a comb while you are combing your hair is a sign of a coming
　disappointment.
　髪をとかしているときに櫛を落とすのは失望の前ぶれ。

☆ crickets　こおろぎ

- A cricket in the house brings good luck.
　家の中にこおろぎがいると縁起がいい。

☆ dandelions　たんぽぽ

- Pick a dandelion that has gone to seed. Take a deep breath and blow the
　seeds into the wind. Count the seeds that remain on the stem. That is the
　number of children you will have.
　たんぽぽの綿毛を手に取り、深呼吸して綿毛を吹き飛ばす。茎に残った
　綿毛の数が、将来授かる子どもの数。

☆ dogs　犬

- A dog howling at night when someone in the house is sick is a bad omen.
　病人のいる家で夜に犬がほえるのは不吉な印。

☆ doors　ドア

- It is bad luck to leave a house through a different door than the one used
　to come into it.
　入ったときと違うドアから家を出るのは縁起が悪い。

☆ ears　耳

- If your right ear itches, someone is speaking well of you. If your left ear
　itches, someone is speaking ill of you.
　右の耳がむずむずするときは誰かにほめられている。左の耳がむずむずする
　ときは誰かに悪口を言われている。

☆ elephants　象

- Pictures of an elephant bring luck, but only if they face a door.
　象の絵は幸運を招く。ただしドアの向かい側の壁に貼ってあるときだけ。

☆ eyelashes　まつげ

- If an eyelash falls out, put it on the back of the hand, make a wish and throw
　it over your shoulder. If it flies off the hand the wish will be granted.
　まつげが抜けたときは手の甲にのせ、願いごとをしながら肩越しに投げる。まつげ
　が手から落ちれば願いごとがかなう。

'Tsubasa, try the third chest,' said his grandmother's voice. 'You
only have six minutes left to open the other two.'
Tsubasa ran back to the third chest and read the inscription.

I am a noun
We have met before
When you listened to the wind

'This one's a noun,' he shouted. 'What could it be?'
Shaggy's voice answered him. 'Think, Tsubasa. Think back to the
beginning of the game.'
'Shaggy,' exclaimed Tsubasa in surprise. 'It sounds like you know
the answer. What is it?'
'I can't tell you, Tsubasa. You'll understand later, but for now you
must work it out yourself.'
Feeling slightly puzzled, Tsubasa turned his mind back to the
beginning of the game. They had arrived in this strange world, and
immediately had to fight the Grinder. The words they had used had
included acorn, bush, cactus, daisy, egg and feather. Tsubasa spoke each
of these words in turn before the chest, but nothing happened.
'No, Tsubasa. Before the Grinder,' said Shaggy. 'Think of the first
message you received.'
'I've got it!' said Tsubasa's father suddenly. 'The first message we
received was "Look inside your heart and use the item you discover to
listen to the wind." The answer to this riddle was "ears." Quick, Tsubasa,
try that!'
Tsubasa cleared his throat, and then said in a loud voice, 'Ears!'
Nothing happened.
'Tsubasa, the time's running out! You must be quicker!'
'But I don't know what it is!' Tsubasa was close to panicking. 'It
would be easier if we didn't have to fight against the clock. The only other
word I can think of is "heart!"
Just as he said this, the same creaking noise that they had heard
before sounded through the forest, and the lid of the third chest opened.
With time running out, Tsubasa knew he had to be quick. He grabbed the
gold coins from the chest, dashed around to the scales, and quickly threw
them into the dish. The dish lowered a little further.
