This week I've had a few experiences with the local wildlife;
two pleasant, one not so pleasant. The first is a pigeon that
has built a nest and laid two eggs in the tree right outside my
bedroom window. When I wake up in the morning, I can see
the pigeon patiently sitting on her eggs without even getting
out of bed, and the sight is very relaxing. Thinking about it,
although I have lived in cities surrounded by pigeons all of my
life, I have never seen a baby pigeon, so I am looking forward
to the seeing the babies when they hatch.

My second encounter was in the park when I was taking the
dog for a walk. It was before six o'clock in the morning and I
had purchased a can of coffee from a vending machine on the
way, and while I was sitting on a bench in the park drinking
the coffee, a sparrow was teaching its baby how to catch insects.
The baby was larger than the parent and wasn't very good at
flying yet, but the parent kept forcing it to chase insects. It
would catch one itself and half kill it before releasing it, and
then push the baby to chase it as it tried to escape. After
a few attempts, the baby understood what was expected of it
and managed to catch the insect, and the mother (father?)
seemed delighted. It really was a beautiful thing to see.

And my last encounter was this (Saturday) morning. My dog,
Coral, and I were on our way home from the morning walk
and were walking alongside a piece of farmland when a scent
attracted her and she stopped to check a bush. While she
had her head buried in the bush I noticed a movement beside
her, and a closer look revealed a small snake about 60cm in
length. I immediately pulled hard on the lead to get the dog
away, and as she came stumbling out of the bush, the snake
attacked. Fortunately it missed, and, to tell the truth, I
don't even know if it was a poisonous snake or not, but from
the aggressive way it acted, I think it might have been. Coral,
typically, didn't even notice, and went happily on her way
searching for new scents.

Stupid dog...

☆ ワン・ポイント英語＜ほっとする／安心する＞
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

★ ほっとする／安心する

「ほっとする」と「安心する」は、辞書ではまったく別のものとして扱われて
いるようですが、英語ではほとんど同じだと言ってもいいでしょう。まず
浮かんでくるのはrelief（安心）やrelieve（安心させる）という語ですが、
ほかの語やフレーズも使えます。

☆ 状況 #1:

　ある朝、メアリがパニック状態でダイニングルームに駆けこんできました。
イヤリングをつけようと思ってアクセサリーケースの中を探していると、
誕生日にジョンからもらった高価なペンダントがなくなっていることに
気がついたのです。「あのペンダント、見なかった？」とたずねられた
ジョンは、洗面所で何かそれらしいものを見たと答えました。数分後、
メアリはペンダントを握りしめて戻ってきました。「ああ、ほっとした」。
英語ならば次のように言うでしょう。

- What a relief.
　ああ、ほっとした

- That’s a relief.
　ああ、よかった

- That’s a weight off my mind.
　これでほっとしたわ

- I can breathe freely again.
　これでまともに息ができるわ

注：最初の2つは「ほっとした」のニュアンスをよく表していますが、あと
の2つを使っても構いません。weight off one’s mind（心が軽くなる）の
ほかにweight off one’s shoulders（肩の荷を下ろす）も、まったく同じ
意味で使えます。

☆ 状況 #2:

　この数か月、ジョンの同僚の売り上げ成績はパッとせず、彼は上司
から何か小言を言われるのではないかと心配しています。ある日の
午前中、彼は部長の部屋に呼ばれ、不安と諦めの表情を浮かべて
中に入っていきました。ジョンは営業まわりで外に出かけなければ
なりませんでしたが、そのあと別の同僚と一緒に飲んだときに、部長室
から戻ってきた彼のようすをたずねてみました。「彼はほっとした
ような顔をしてたよ」と同僚は答えました。英語ではこう言うでしょう。

- He seemed relieved.
　ほっとしたような顔をしてたよ

- He looked quite relieved.
　すごくほっとしていたみたいだ

- He didn’t seem to have a care in the world.
　この世にはなんの心配事もないというような顔つきだった

- He appeared free from care.
　心配事から解放されたような顔だった

- He looked like a weight had been lifted from his shoulders.
　肩の荷が下りたみたいなようすだった

注：この場合の「ほっとした」は、relievedを使っても、上にあげた
イディオムを使っても表すことができます。ここで大切なのは、
「～なようすだった」のニュアンスを添えるseem、look、appear
などの語です。

☆ 状況 #3:

　ジョンの会社はISO9000（品質管理保証規格）の審査を受ける
ことになりました。そのためには経営方針を大幅に変え、社員
ひとりひとりの勤務態度を厳しくチェックしなければなりません。
社長からの回覧には、「ISO9000の認証取得は顧客の安心感
を増す。これらの変化に対し、全員が前向きに取り組むように
願いたい」と書かれていました。英語では次のように書かれる
でしょう。

- It will provide our customers with a sense of security.
　認証を取得すれば顧客に安心感を与えることができるだろう

- It will provide reassurance for our customers.
　認証の取得は顧客に安心感を与えるだろう

- It will assure our customers of our reliability.
　認証の取得は顧客に信頼感を与えることになる

- Our customers will be able to place their trust in us.
　顧客はわが社に信頼を置くことができるようになるだろう

注：「安心感」はsense of securityとするのがいちばんぴったり
ですが、このような状況ではむしろreassurance、reliability、trust
などがよく使われます。

☆ 状況 #4:

　メアリは友人の家に出かけ、コーヒーを飲みながら朝のひととき
を過ごしています。友人は小さなミニュチュア・ダックスフントを
飼っています。メアリは、その犬が友人の膝にずっと頭をのせて
いることに興味をひかれました。「からだをくっつけてると安心する
らしいの」と友人は言いました。英語では次のように言うでしょう。

- The contact helps her relax.
　からだをくっつけてるとリラックスできるんでしょうね

- The contact keeps her calm.
　からだをくっつけてると気持ちが落ち着くみたいなの

- The contact helps her rest easy.
　からだをくっつけてると気が休まるみたい

- The contact provides her with a sense of security.
　からだをくっつけてると安心するみたいなの

注：この「安心」は、「くつろぎ」や「落ち着き」と同じような意味で
使われています。相手に「安心してください」と言うときも、以下の
例のように同じことがあてはまります。

- Please relax.
どうぞリラックスしてください

- Please calm down.
どうか落ち着いて

- Please rest easy.
どうか気を休めて

☆ 状況 #5:

　ジョンの部署のひとりが3年間、海外支店で勤務することに
なりました。彼は壮行会で「行きつけのバーでビールを飲む
ために、毎月一度は出張で帰ってきますから、どうぞ安心して
ください」と、冗談まじりに挨拶をしました。英語ならば次のよう
に言うでしょう。

- But don’t worry, I’ll be back once every month.
　でも安心してください。私は毎月一度帰ってきますから

- But you can relax because I’ll be back every month.
　でも心配にはおよびません。私は毎月帰ってきますから

- You will be relieved to know that I’ll be back every month.
　私が毎月帰ってくるとわかれば、みなさん安心してくださるでしょう

- You will be happy to hear that I’ll be back every month.
　私が毎月帰ってくると聞けば、みなさん満足してくださるでしょう

- You will be glad to hear that I’ll be back every month.
　私が毎月帰ってくると聞けば、みなさん喜んでくださるでしょう

注：この場合の「安心」は、状況 #4ですでに説明しましたが、ここ
では完全文になっています。

★ 英語の迷信－Part IIII

☆ cemeteries　墓地

- You must hold your breath while going past a cemetery or you
　will breathe in the spirit of someone who has recently died.
　墓地を通りすぎるときは息を止めること。死んだばかりの人の霊を
　吸いこんでしまうから。

☆ cheeks　ほお

- If your cheeks suddenly feel on fire, someone is talking about you.
　ほおが急にかっと熱くなったら、誰かに噂されている。

☆ chimney sweeps　煙突掃除人

- It is very lucky to meet a chimney sweep by chance. Make a wish
　when sighting one and the wish will come true.
　煙突掃除人と偶然出会うのは幸運の印。見かけたときに願いごとを
　すればかなえられる。

☆ cigarettes　煙草

- It is bad luck to light three cigarettes with the same match.
　1本のマッチで3本の煙草に火をつけるのは縁起が悪い。

☆ circles　円

- Evil spirits can't harm you when you stand inside a circle.
　円の中に立っていれば、悪霊から危害を加えられることがない。

☆ clocks　置時計

- If a clock which has not been working suddenly chimes, there will
　be a death in the family.
　止まっていた置時計が突然鳴ると、家に死人が出る。

☆ clover　クローバー

- It is good luck to find a four-leaf clover.
　4つ葉のクローバーを見つけると幸運が舞い込む。

- Clover protects human beings and animals from the spell of magicians
　and the wiles of fairies, and brings good luck to those who keep it in
　the house.
　クローバーは魔法使いの呪いや妖精のいたずらから人間や動物を守る。
　また、家に置いておくと幸運をもたらす。

☆ coins　硬貨

- It is bad luck to pick up a coin if it is tails side up. Good luck comes
　if it is heads up.
　硬貨をつかんだときに上下が逆だと縁起が悪い。正しい向きならば縁起
　がいい。

Tsubasa read the message on the chest once again. The words
written on it said:

I am a verb
That rhymes with "hollow"
Use me to walk a path

'A word that rhymes with "hollow." What could that be? Sorrow? I
wish we had a dictionary.'
'No, you don't walk paths with sorrow,' said his father. 'What
about "todo?"'
'Dad, that's Japanese for sea lion. It has to be an English word.'
'Try the second and third chests, Tsubasa,' came Shaggy's voice.
'They might be easier.'
'Good thinking, Shaggy.'
Tsubasa walked to the second chest and read the message.

I am a pronoun
And I'm very possessive
But I don't belong to me

'A pronoun? You? I?'
'No, Tsubasa,' said Sayaka. 'It's a possessive pronoun. It says so in
the second line. Try a few of those.'
Tsubasa shrugged, and then said, 'Mine.'
Nothing happened.
He looked doubtfully at his father, and said, 'Hers.'
Nothing happened.
'Tsubasa,' said Shaggy's voice. 'The message says the pronoun
doesn't belong to it. That means it belongs to somebody else. Use your
head!'
'If it doesn't belong to me, then it must belong to you. Right?'
'Just try it! The time is running out.'
Tsubasa stood before the chest, took a deep breath, and said,
'Your.'
A creaking sound echoed through the forest, and the lid of the
second chest began to open gradually. When it was fully open, Tsubasa
looked inside and found six gold coins.
'It's open!' he shouted excitedly. 'There's gold inside.'
'Well done, Tsubasa,' said his father. 'Quick, put the gold on the
scales.'
Tsubasa scooped the gold from the chest with both hands, and
then ran behind the chests to the scales. He gently placed the gold on the
right-hand dish. The gold weighed the dish down a little, but it was still
not horizontal with the left-hand dish.
