Last Sunday was my son's and grandson's birthday. Father and
son, both born on the same day! Unusual, yes?A small party was
held at my son's home for about nine people in total, and a wonderful
time was had by all. However, call it a mistake if you will, but
we bought my son the Mario Kart software for his Nintendo Wii
machine, with predictable results. I think I mentioned before that
all of the grown men spent too much time playing with Wii over
the Christmas period, and the same thing happened last week.
The children were told to keep quiet, and all of the adult men
(four, including me, my elder son, my younger son, and my son's
father-in-law...:-) sat shoulder to shoulder on the sofa, each
wrestling with a plastic steering wheel for several hours.

Needless to say, the women weren't very impressed, and I received
a stern lecture on the way home in the car...

I also had muscle ache on Monday...:-)

☆ ワン・ポイント英語＜～の鑑＞

★ ～の鑑

　このニュアンスを英語で表すにはいくつか方法があり、どれも同じ程度に
「～の鑑」の意味を表しています。とはいえ、おそらくrole modelとperfect
exampleなどが最もよく用いられるのではないでしょうか。

■ role model（役割モデル、模範）

- He is the role model for all salesman.
　彼はセールスマンの鑑だ

- She is the role model of womanhood.
　彼女は女性の鑑だ

- This is a role model of modern architecture.
　これは現代建築の模範だ

■ perfect example（完璧な例、手本）

- This is a perfect example of modern technology.
　これは現代技術の好例だ

- He is a perfect example of loyalty.
　彼は忠誠心の鑑だ

- She is a perfect example of feminine virtue.
　彼女は女性の美徳の手本だ

■ paragon（模範、手本）

- He is a paragon of the arts.
　彼は芸術の化身だ

- She is a paragon of beauty.
　彼女は美の化身だ

- She is a paragon of the perfect wife.
　彼女は妻の鑑だ

■ epitome（典型、ひな型）

- He is the epitome of what gentlemen should be like.
　彼は紳士のあるべき姿の典型だ

- This is the epitome of classical literature.
　これは古典文学の典型だ

- His company is the epitome of the perfect employer.
　彼の会社は雇用者の鑑だ

----- The Land of Words: Part VII -----

Tsubasa looked about fearfully. He was still not sure exactly what
the purpose of the game was, but he suspected that he and his father
would have to face further danger before that was revealed to them. The
forest was quiet. He looked across at his father.
'Can you hear anything?' he asked.
'Nothing,' replied Mr. Tanaka.
'Can you see anything that we can't?' Tsubasa shouted to his
family back home in their living room.
'Nothing at all, Tsubasa,' said his mother's voice. 'Maybe you
should look around for some way out of there. A door, maybe.'
'But we've only just arrived. This is fun!'
'Tsubasa!' came his grandmother's voice. 'Don't be silly. This is no
longer a game. It's dangerous!'
'I'm afraid your only way out is to complete the game, Tsubasa,'
said Shaggy's voice. 'There's no turning back now.'
Just then, Tsubasa heard a strange noise coming from the fallen
Grinder. Both Tsubasa and his father looked over at it and saw that an
opening had appeared in its enormous back. They began to back away
fearfully, when a small, old man with a long white beard jumped out. He
was dressed in a green robe, and held something in his hand. He hurried
over to where Tsubasa and his father were standing.
'Quick!' the little old man said. 'You must deliver this key to
Drodore before it's too late!'
The little old man shoved a large metal key into Tsubasa's hand,
and before Tsubasa or his father could open their mouths, he had run off
towards the forest, his white beard flowing over his shoulder.
'Wait!' shouted Tsubasa. 'Who's Drodore? Where can we find
him?'
'No time, no time,' mumbled the little old man. 'Be quick!' And
with that, he disappeared into the depths of the forest.
'What do you think that was about?' asked Tsubasa's father in
surprise.
'Tsubasa!' shouted Sayaka's voice in panic. 'A clock has appeared
on the screen. It has begun counting down one hour.'
'What?'
'Yes. You have less than one hour to find Drodore. You'd better
start moving.'
Tsubasa looked about his swiftly, wondering in which way to go.
There was nobody else in the clearing, so he knew they had to head into
the forest. But where should they start? If they only had one hour, he
didn't want to make any mistakes. In the end, his father made the decision
for him.
'I suppose we should follow that little fellow. At least we know
there's a path through the forest in that direction.'
'Good thinking, dad,' said Tsubasa. 'Let's get going.'
