I discovered the other day that the public waterworks department
make sales calls. I was working in my study when a guy in a uniform
rang the doorbell. He told me he was from the waterworks depart-
ment, and he was worried because our water consumption had
dropped by half since last year. Thinking over the problem, we came
to the decision that this was probably caused by the absence of my
younger son, who recently only returns home about once a week
because he is busy at work, and because we bought a new washing
machine. My son used to shower about twice every day and our
new washing machine is one of those new water-saving models, so
these two factors were obviously to blame.

But, somehow this guy managed to make me feel slightly guilty,
as if I was not being a responsible citizen. It seems strange that in
the age of conservation one should be hassled for saving resources,
and I am still not quite sure if the guy called because be was genuinely
worried or because he wanted to encourage me to use as much water
as possible.

Weird...

☆ ワン・ポイント英語＜頼りになる／信頼できる＞
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

★ 頼りになる／信頼できる

　これらの語はそれほど英語に訳しにくいわけではありません。たいていは
辞書に載っている語でも、そのニュアンスを十分に伝えることができるでしょう。
しかし辞書の訳語以外に、次のようなフレーズ（イディオムも含む）を使うことが
できます。「頼りになる／信頼できる」と「頼りにしてはいけない／信頼しては
いけない」の例に分けて載せておきます。

☆ 頼りになる／信頼できる

- You can always rely on her.
　彼女はいつでも頼りにすることができる

- She is very reliable.
　彼女は非常に頼りになる

- You can always trust her.
　いつでも彼女を信頼していい

- She is very trustworthy.
　彼女は信頼に値する

- You can always depend on her.
　いつだって彼女をあてにしていい

- She is very dependable.
　彼女はとても信頼できる

- She will never let you down.
　彼女があなたをがっかりさせることはない

- Anything she says you can take to the bank.
　彼女が言うことは銀行に預けることができる→彼女の言うことは信用できる

- You can trust her with your life.
　あなたは完全に彼女を信頼していい

☆ 頼りにしてはいけない／信頼してはいけない

- Never rely on her.
　決して彼女を頼りにしてはならない

- Never trust her.
　彼女を信用してはいけない

- Never depend on her.
　彼女をあてにするな

- Never put your trust in her.
　彼女に信頼を置いてはならない

- You can’t trust her an inch.
　ほんの1インチも彼女を信用してはだめだ

- You can’t trust her further than you can throw her.
　あなたが彼女を投げられる以上に彼女を信用してはならない→彼女を信用
　してはならない

- You can’t depend on anything she says.
　彼女の言うことは何も信用できない

- She’ll let you down as soon as look at you.
　彼女はあなたを見るなりあなたをがっかりさせるだろう

- Never put your cakes in her basket.
　彼女の籠にあなたのケーキを入れてはならない→彼女を信用してはならない）

注：She’ll let you down as soon as look at you.は、文法的に正しくないように
　　見えますが、常にこの形で使われます。

- 眼鏡の壊れた個所にばんそうこうで貼って固定している

- スマイリーフェイスを付けない文をどうしても書けない
　you find it impossible to write a sentence without a smiley face...(`-`)

You are about to fight the Grinder, a beast who's fast and fierce
If you do not defeat him, then his swords your head will pierce
His weakness is his backbone, through which a twig will pass
And twigs there are aplenty, just lying on the grass
But the twig you'll find most suitable is connected to a tree
So your task is just to move him there, and then prepare to flee
The method of achieving this, is easy once you've found
Some items in accordance to a sequence where they're bound
This sequence you have known since your early childhood days
And it forms the very basis of your language and its ways

Tsubasa looked at his father. He then looked across at the Grinder,
who was gradually getting closer.
'Quick, dad!' he said. 'Think of a sequence that we use in
language.'
'A sequence?' asked his father. 'What sort of sequence?'
'I don't know! But we have to think of one soon. Otherwise the
Grinder will be upon us. Anybody got any ideas?'
'What about numbers, Tsubasa?' called his mother's voice. 'Maybe
you have to collect things in increasing numbers. Get one of one thing,
two of another, three of another. Understand?'
'Yes, I understand. Quick, dad! Let's get to work.'
Tsubasa looked down at his feet. He picked up a leaf, and
shouted 'One leaf!' Then he picked up two stones, and shouted 'Two
stones!' He then found some twigs and shouted, 'Three twigs!'
'It's not working, Tsubasa,' shouted his sister.
'Here you are, Tsubasa,' said his father. 'Try these.'
       He put four small objects in Tsubasa's hand, and Tsubasa shouted
'Four acorns!'
       'It worked!' came his grandmother's voice. 'Look at the Grinder.'
       Tsubasa and his father looked across at the Grinder, who was
about half the distance between them and the forest. It had halted its
forward movement and was looking confused. Suddenly, it took three
steps backwards.
       'It's the alphabet!' cried Sayaka excitedly. 'The sequence you want
is the alphabet, not numbers! Acorn starts with an A. Now you have to
find something beginning with B!'
       Just as Sayaka finished this sentence, the Grinder took a step
forward and brought its swords crashing to the ground.
       'But be quick!'
       Tsubasa frantically searched the area around him and called to his
father. 'Dad, you look for something starting with C, and I'll look for
something starting with B.'
       'All right,' acknowledged his father as he began to hunt around on
the grass. 'How about this?' he called, holding up a small cactus.
       'That's fine, but we have to find the B item first.' He looked
around harder, all the while keeping an eye on the Grinder, who was now
closer. 'I've got it!' he shouted, running over to a plant growing out of the
grass. 'Bush!' he shouted.
