I love baseball, and if possible I like to watch every Giants game on
TV. This year, however, I have been so busy that I haven't managed
to watch a single game, so last Friday I decided that I was not going
to work late and switched on the TV instead of the computer. As it
was the first full game of the season that I was going to see, I thought
that a small celebration was in order, so opened a bottle of champagne
to go with dinner. I sat eagerly at the dinner table with the bottle
chilled and open, and then my wife served up...

Niku-jaga, hokke and natto...

A mismatch you think? Oh, no... A perfect harmony of East and West.

The best meal I've had for a long time...:-)

I was contacted by a publisher last week and asked to write a collection
of essays for use in a university text-book. I accepted, of course, and
will start work on it from June. This will be the third university text-book
I have written (after The Unchanging Face of Great Britain and Listening
Strategies for the TOEIC Test,) and I must admit, it really is a great
honour to know that my books are being used to educate the future of
Japan.

For some reason the universities decided not to use the book I wrote
on British Humour. I wonder why...:-)

☆ ワン・ポイント英語＜「気持ちいい」は英語でこう言うの＞

★ 「気持ちいい」は英語でこう言うの

気持ちいい／いい気持ち

　たいていはfeel goodというフレーズで表すことができますが、そこに
ひとこと、自分の感想をつけ足す場合が多いようです。

☆ 状況１　:温泉につかって「ああ極楽」
　ジョンとメアリは2、3日過ごす予定で山の温泉に来ています。ふたりは
到着するとすぐ個別の浴室に下りていき、お湯につかりました。ジョンは
タオルを頭にのせ、湯船にもたれかかって言いました。「ああ、気持ちいい」。
英語ならばこう言うでしょう。

- That feels so good.
　ああ、いい気持ち

- This is heaven.　
　まさに天国

- This is wonderful.　
　こりゃいいね

- Ah, heavenly.　
　ああ、極楽、極楽

- Pure luxury.　
　最高の贅沢だ

注：最初のフレーズが「気持ちいい」にいちばんよく似ています。しかしどちら
かといえば、「天国」を意味するheavenやparadiseが使われることのほうが多い
かもしれません。また、wonderfulもよく使われます。

☆ 状況２　:深呼吸をして「気持ちいい！」
　風呂に入ったあと、ジョンとメアリは森に散歩に行きました。空気はひんやり
としてすがすがしく、木々の香りに満ちています。メアリは大きく伸びをして
「いい気持ち！」と言いました。英語では次のように言うでしょう。

- Doesn’t this feel good?　
　なんていい気持ちなの

- It feels good to be alive.　
　生きててよかった

- This is so exhilarating.　
　すごく元気が出るわね

- This is absolutely wonderful.　
　ほんとに最高

注：状況１で使ったフレーズがここでも使われており、逆にここで使った
フレーズを状況 #1で使うこともできます。exhilaratingという語にはrefreshing
（心身を爽快にする）のニュアンスが含まれ、このような状況にぴったりです。
ぜひ覚えておきましょう。

☆ 状況 #3:
　メアリは母親と、お気に入りのフランス料理のレストランでランチを食べて
います。メアリはまたいつものように少し食べすぎてしまいましたが、デザート
を終えたあと、椅子の背にもたれかかり、おなかを軽く叩きながら「ああ、いい
気持ち」、満足そうです。英語では次のように言うでしょう。

- That was wonderful.
　ああ、おいしかった

- That was amazing.
　すばらしかったわ

- Total satisfaction.
　すっかり満足

- Fully replete.
　おなかいっぱい

注：最初の2つは状況 #2で使われていたフレーズにそっくりですが、3つ目と
4つ目はメアリの感想であり、日本語の「いい気持ち」により近いと言えるでしょう。

- 社内パーティでは、ネクタイを額に締め、コマネッチのギャグを披露する
　you fasten your tie around your forehead at the office party and do the
　"Komanechi" gag

- 受け取ったギリチョコの数を自慢する
　you boast about the amount of giri choco you received

- 電車に乗っている時に、ミニ・スカートを着ている若い女性の向かい側の
　席を取り合う
　you fight for the seat on the train located directly opposite the young
　girl wearing a mini skirt

- 妻が買い物へ出かけている間に、へそくりの隠し場所を物色する
　you search for your wife's hesokuri when she goes shopping

- 電気カミソリでそり残した髭が数本長く伸びている
　you have several long whiskers under your chin that the electric shaver
　always misses

- 背広のボタンホールに社章をつけている
　you wear the company emblem in your buttonhole

- １０万以上の買い物はすべてボーナス払いにする
　you arrange for everything over the cost of \100,000 to be paid at bonus
　time

- 飲みに行くとき、自分の奥さんの悪口を言う
　you complain about your wife when you go drinking

- 夏休みは、３日間家でゴロゴロして高校野球を見るのが一番の楽しみだ
　your idea of a summer vacation is laying on the tatami for three days
　watching high school baseball

- 年休を全部使い切ろうなんてとんでもない
　you wouldn't dream of taking your full year's allotment of holidays from
　work

- 洋服のセンスを誉められると、「コーディネートはコーデネート」と得意満面
　に言う
　somebody compliments you on your clothes, and you say, "Coordinate wa
　ko deneito"

- ３人以上で飲みに行く時は、幹事がいないと不安
　you feel slightly anxious about going drinking with more than three people
　unless a kanji has taken care of all arrangements

- ビールのおしゃくをうけるとき、「おっとっとっと」と言ってしまう
　you say "oh, to, to, to, to" when your beer glass is being refilled

- 女性の話をするとき、小指を立ててほのめかす
　you suggestively raise your pinky finger when discussing the female of the
　species

- 会議中にメモをたっぷりとるが、あとで捨てしまう
　you take voluminous notes during company meetings, and then throw them
　away

- 会議中にボール・ペンで耳掃除をする
　you clean your ears with a pen during business meetings

- 客がウィスキー・ストレートを注文すると、「わ、すごい！」と言う
　you say "Wa, sugoi!" when a client orders his whisky straight

- ポケットの中にメモ用紙をもっていても、居酒屋で飲んでいる時などを
　コースターやティシューに書く
　you use beer coasters and napkins for taking notes in bars when you
　have a notepad in your pocket

- 常に持ち歩くものは子供達の写真4枚、愛犬の写真2枚、奥さんの
　写真０枚
　your always carry four pictures of your children, one of your dog,
　and none of your wife

               ----- The Henderson Arrows: 最終章 -----

The sun was shining down just as brightly, if not brighter,
in Norfolk as in London, and Barlington Manor justifiably received its
fair share. Isador Greenbaum, that king of the Antwerp diamond market,
was standing in his drawing room near the window, holding the darts
with which Arnold ‘Doubles’ Henderson had shot out in the 1953 All
England Counties Darts Championship towards a sunbeam. Perfect, he
thought to himself, and a smile played gently about his smooth, pebble-
glassed face. He felt a little guilty at having received the darts at such
a low price. He should, he realized now, have paid at least double the
sum he had forked over. Still, it was too late now. He only hoped that
the gentleman with the greasy hair and big ears was not too disappointed.
Cradling the darts gently in his arms, he crossed the drawing
room, opened the door and made tracks for his small dart museum. Having
arrived, he emitted a small sigh of satisfaction as he saw his exhibits set
out before him, and pride seemed to want to burst from his chest.
He moved over to the most prominent glass cabinet and removed
a small piece of feather that appeared to have seen better days. It was,
in fact, a part of the dart with which George Pendlum-Pendlum, who later
went on to Olympic fencing fame, had defended the honor of a young lady
from the lusty approaches of six horny-looking young men in the back
streets of New Delhi. He had paid only two-thousand five-hundred pounds
for it, and thought it cheap at the price.
Having relegated the feather to less auspicious surroundings, he
reverently laid the Henderson darts in their place. He fluffed out the soft
velvet surround until he thought it set off the beauty of the trophy perfectly,
and sat down in a deep leather armchair, strategically placed so that he could
take in all of his exhibits with minimal exertion.
He was not, however, taking in all of his exhibits. He was concen-
trating all of his power on the recently placed darts with a look of euphoria
spread comfortably over his soft features.
“Amazing!” he said aloud, “And so cheap!”
He sighed the sigh of a well-contented man.
“Only six thousand pounds!”
