I've had a really busy year up until now, and updating the [Coming
Soon] section of my homepage this week made me realize why. I
have a total of seven books scheduled to be published between
June and October...!!! That's a lot of books for such a short period.
And, as of today, only two of them are actually finished. I should
finish another one either tomorrow (Sunday) or the next day, and
two more by mid-April, but I haven't even started thinking about
the other two yet.

It's a good job I like writing...:-)

☆ ワン・ポイント英語＜Catchの色々な意味＞

★ catch

catchという動詞の使い方としては、catch a ball（ボールを受ける）、catch a
cold（風邪をひく）、catch a bus（バスをつかまえる）、catch a criminal（犯人
を捕らえる）などがよく知られています。これらは日本語にするのも簡単なの
ですが、実はcatchの用法はかなり幅広く、ふつうならまったく別の動詞を
使うようなときにcatchを使うこともあります。例をあげてみましょう。

■ catch --> see / watch　見る、会う
- I’ll catch you later.
　またあとで会いましょう。
- I caught the late-night news before I went to bed.
　寝る前に深夜のニュースを観た。
- We caught a movie on our first date.
　私たちは初めてのデートで映画を観た。

■ catch --> snag / entangle　ひっかける、からませる
- I caught the hem of my dress in my heel.
　私はドレスの裾をかかとにひっかけた。
- He caught the sleeve of his coat on the door handle.
　彼はコートの袖をドアの取っ手にひっかけた。
- Her hair got caught on a twig as she was walking through the woods.
　森を歩いているときに彼女の髪が小枝にからまった。

■ catch --> trap / ensnare　罠にかける、捕らえる
- He caught his fingers in the doors of the train.
　彼は列車のドアに指をはさまれた。
- The bear was caught before it could do any damage.
　その熊は何も危害を及ぼさないうちに罠で捕らえられた。
- The largest fish I ever caught weighed six and a half kilograms.
　私がこれまでに捕らえた最も大きな魚は6.5キロもあった。

■ catch --> hear / comprehend　聞く、理解する
- Could you say that again? I didn’t catch you.
　もう一度言っていただけますか。聞こえなかったんです。
- It is difficult to catch the sound of the telephone with the TV so loud.
　テレビが大きな音でついていると、電話の相手の声が聞き取りにくい。
- He explained it to me, but I didn’t catch his meaning.
　彼はそれを説明してくれたのだが、私には意味がわからなかった。

■ catch --> draw level　追いつく、対等になる
- We’ll have to walk faster if we want to catch up with them.
　彼らに追いつきたかったら、もっと速く歩かなくてはならない。
- I am going to bed early tonight to catch up on my sleep.
　睡眠不足を取り戻すために、今晩は早く寝るつもりだ。
- You must study much harder if you want to catch up with the rest of
　the class.
　クラスのみんなに追いつきたかったら、もっと一生懸命勉強しなくちゃ。

■ catch --> ignite　火がつく、火をつける
- I am trying to light the barbecue, but it hasn’t caught yet.
　バーベキューに火をつけようとしているのだが、まだつかない。
- The heat from the oil stove caught the curtains on fire.
　石油ストーブの熱でカーテンに火がついた。
- I’m sorry I’m late, but the engine of my car wouldn’t catch.
　遅くなってごめんなさい。車のエンジンがなかなかかからなかったの。

■ catch up --> involve　巻き込む
- He was supposed to fly to Spain, but he got caught up in the air strike.
　彼は飛行機でスペインに行くはずだったが、航空会社のストライキに
　巻き込まれた。
- I would have arrived earlier, but I got caught up in a traffic accident.
　もっと早く着くはずだったのだが、交通事故に巻き込まれてしまった。
- I promised to be there by seven o’clock, but I got caught up at work.
　7時までにはそこに行けると約束したが、仕事に巻き込まれてしまった。

■ catch --> attract / enthrall　（注意を）引きつける、魅了する
- I was immediately caught by the beauty of the music.
　私はたちまち音楽の美しさに魅了された。
- She caught the waiter’s attention by clicking her fingers.
　彼女は指を鳴らしてウェイターの注意を引いた。
- The thought of spending the winter in a tropical country immediately
　caught his imagination.
　南国で冬を過ごすという思いつきに、彼はたちまち夢中になった。

■ catch --> hit　叩く、打撃を加える（イギリス英語）
- His father caught him around the head with a swift slap.
　父親は彼の頭をぴしゃりと叩いた。
- The typhoon caught the edge of the Izu Peninsular on its way past.
　台風は通過するときに伊豆半島の先端を直撃した。
- My wife left the cupboard door open, and I caught my head on it.
　妻が棚の戸をあけっぱなしにしていたので、私はそれに頭をぶつけた。

■ catch --> 名詞としての用法
catchという語は、次のように名詞としても使えます。
- ［罠］
　Read the contract carefully before you sign it in case there is a catch.
　何か落とし穴があるといけないので、署名する前に契約書を注意深く
　読むように。
- ［感情の高まりによる声や息の途切れ］
　Her father gave the wedding speech with a catch in his throat.
　彼の父親は声をつまらせながら結婚式のスピーチをした。
- ［収獲］
　Our fishing trip didn’t end with a very good catch.
　釣りに出かけたが、あまり魚が釣れなかった。

■ Catch-22
アメリカの小説家ジョーゼフ・へラーの同名の小説で有名になった語
で、「どうやっても勝ち目のない状況」の意味。
- Paying taxes is a Catch-22 situation. You have to earn money in
　order to pay taxes, but the more money you earn the more tax you
　have to pay.
　納税とはどうにも理不尽なものだ。税金を払うためには金を稼がな
　ければならないが、稼げば稼ぐほど税金を払わなければならない。
- The Actors’ Trade Union has created a Catch-22 situation. It is
　 impossible to get a job as an actor unless you are a member of the
　 union, but you can’t join the union unless you are a working actor.
　俳優組合は八方ふさがりの状況を呈している。組合のメンバーでなければ
　なかなか出演の機会を得られないが、ふだんから俳優としての仕事を
　していなければ組合に入れない。

今週からちょっとシリーズっぽいものを載せます。色々な人の特徴を
突っ込んでみようと思って、『自分が「○○だ！」と分った瞬間とは．．．』
を作ってみました。今回は自分を突っ込んで「外人だ！」になりますが、
誰にも見逃すことなく、「主婦」、「サラリーマン」、「おばさん」、「おっさん」、
「OL]、「女子高生」、「オタク」、「帰国子女」、「芸能人」、「職人」、
「スポーツ選手」、「政治家」などなど、順じに載せちゃいますよ．．．:-)

★ 自分が［外人だ！］と分かった瞬間とは．．．

- デパートに入る時、従業員にお辞儀され、自分も思わずお辞儀してしまう。
　I return the bows of the staff when I enter a department store

- 自分の血液型を知らない。
　I don't know my blood type

- トイレのスリッパーを履いたままリビングに戻る。
　I return to the living room wearing toilet slippers.

- テレビの音多切り替えスイッチが常に「副」にセットされている。
　The bilingual switch on my TV is perpetually set at "sub"

- 車が来ていない場合、歩行者用信号が青でなくても横断歩道渡ってしまう。
　I cross the street before the little green man lights up if no cars are coming

- どんなに努力しても、“マクドナルド”を６音節で言えない。
　No matter how hard I try, I can't say "McDonald's" in six syllables

- 結婚式は柄物のネクタイで出席する。
　I wear patterned neckties when attending weddings

- タクシーに乗るとき、自動開閉を待たず自分でドアを開けてしまう。
　I open the door to taxis before the driver can pull the lever

- 食堂で箸しか置いていない場合、絶対に豆腐は注文しない。
　I never order tofu in restaurants if only chopsticks are available

- りんご、梨、ぶどうなどの皮まで食べてしまう。
　I eat the peel on apples, pears and grapes, etc.

- 灯油ストーブを蹴って消す。
　I kick the kerosene heater to turn it off.

- 妻のことを「ダーリン」と呼んでいる。
　I call my wife "darling."

- 人がくしゃみするとき、思わず"bless you!"と言ってしまう。
　I automatically say "bless you!" when somebody sneezes.

- 霧雨なら傘をささない。
　I don't use an umbrella if its only drizzling.

               ----- The Henderson Arrows: Part XVII -----

Arlington exchanged another glance with Horseworthy.
Things were strange, he was thinking, and Horseworthy totally
agreed with him. This pleb of a shopkeeper should have been
leaping around the place as if he’d won the pools, for he didn’t,
as yet, understand the machinations fate and a brigadier from the
Salvation Army had conjured up to deprive him of all that lovely
moolah he was expecting. Still, he was probably always a miserable
old whatsit. Possibly even Scottish.
“But,” continued Sir Peter, and he paused here to lend
the proceedings the correct sympathetic tone. No good taking the
bread from a fellow’s mouth and then laughing in his face. “Circum-
stances have altered the situation to some extent, and we are now
not, as you have no doubt gathered, enemies. A complete recon-
ciliation has been effected.”
“Bleedin’ obvious, that.”
“Yes… er… well. I’m glad you think so. However,
coming to the point, we would like to take those darts off your
hands for the advertised fifty pounds. We have agreed to pay
twenty-five pounds each, and I have the money here. Sorry to
dash your dreams of riches against the rocks of reality and all
that, but, well, you know, money is money, what?”
“Just as I thought. Come to rub me nose in it. Get
thee behind me Satan, and take your poxy money with you.”
“What the devil are you talking about? You want to
sell those darts, right? I know you will not receive the substantial
sum that you had set your heart upon, but bless my soul, fifty
smackeroonies is nice money.”
“Yus, I know that,” said Bertie reasonably, “And to
tell the truth, I was surprised to get that for ‘em. They ‘ad much
better sets in that there magazine, they ‘ad.”
He immediately had the attention of both men. Sir Edward
stopped fiddling with an old brass telescope, a look on apprehension
on his face. Sir Peter looked deeply into Bertie’s eyes and spoke softly.
“You drivel in the past tense, old man. Pray, make yourself
clear.”
Bertie Cooper took umbrage. It was true that he had made
thirty quid on the deal, and for that he was duly grateful, but when fat
men come and waved cash under his nose after the financial part of the
deal was over, he looked askance.
“Why don’t you go and jump in the lake?” he said. “You’ve
got the bleedin’ darts, so stop waving your dough about. The way you
bloody rich people go on to get your jollies makes me want to puke. Go
orn! Naff orf! ‘Fore I set the dog on you.”
Sir Peter, as had Sir Edward at an earlier date, decided on
the honeyed word. Bullying a man like this was obviously futile. Besides,
the dog that he had threatened to set on them was now exercising his
vocal chords and London, to Sir Peter, seemed to have shrunk a good
deal.
“Now, listen here, my good man,” he said ingratiatingly. “Am
I to believe that you have sold the darts? Quite all right if you have, of
course, but as you can imagine, we do have some slight interest in their
sale.”
“’Course I bleedin’ sold ‘em! ‘Ad no choice, did I? Dirty
trick, that!”
“And… er… what trick would this be?”
“Sending a bleedin’ lawyer round to explain the Trade Descrip-
tions Act to me. ‘It might interest you to know,’ he said, ‘that under the
Trade Description Act, you must sell products at the price advertised.
To do otherwise is a serious offense that will cause the might of the
Crown to get stroppy and stick you with a heavy fine.’”
Horseworthy and Arlington gaped.
“You’ve sold them?” asked Sir Edward Horseworthy incredu-
lously. “To somebody else?”
“’Ad to, didn’t I? Didn’t want to get fined now, did I? Grow
up!”
“But, for heaven’s sake, why didn’t you say you had reserved
them for somebody else? He wouldn’t have known any different.”
