The 17th of March was my wedding anniversary. Strangely enough, it
was also my wife's wedding anniversay. She is the only other person I
know who has a wedding anniversary on the same day as me...:-) March
17th is also St. Patrick's day. St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland,
so I like to make sure I have a bottle of whiskey in the house to drink
a toast to notonly St. Patrick, but also to my wife and myself. Anybody
who has a rudimentary knowledge of alcoholic beverages will recognize
that I was speaking about Irish whiskey in the previous sentence. You
see, Scotch whisky is spelled without an "e", whereas Irish whiskey
is spelled with an "e".

I wrote the above paragraph last night (March 21,) and today I
experienced a strange coincidence. We have some friends whose
wedding anniversay is also in March, so every year we get together
for a celebratory lunch. That was today (March 22.) We had a
great meal at a French restaurant, accompanied by 2 bottles of
red wine, and were then invited back to our friends' home for
coffee. Instead of coffee, however, we decided to have another drink,
and my friend set up a table in the garden and brought out a bottle of
wine for the ladies and a bottle of whisk(e)y for the men. Yes, you've
guess it! It was a bottle of Jameson's Irish whiskey...!!!

☆ ワン・ポイント英語＜面白いフレーズ＞

★ at loggerheads

どちらの側もあとには引かずに「対立しあう」こと。in disagreement（不一致で）、
argumentative（論争的な）、having a row（争って）、at each other's throats
（いがみあって）などの代わりに使うことができます。loggerは、昔、馬が歩き
出さないよう脚をとどめておくのに使った重い木製のブロックのこと。
at loggerheadsは、どちらの側も頑として動こうとしない状態なのです。

このフレーズは次のように使われます。

- I enjoy living where we do, but it is difficult because my wife is always at
　loggerheads with the neighbors.
　私はいま住んでいる場所での生活を楽しんでいるが、それも楽ではない。
　妻がいつも近所の人たちといさかいを起こすからだ。

- My boss and I are at loggerheads over the way in which we should manage
　our clients' accounts.
　上司と私は、顧客への掛け売りのやり方のことで対立している。

- My husband wants his mother and father to live with us, but I'd rather
　not as I am always at loggerheads with this mother.
　夫は自分の両親と同居したがっているが、私は彼の母親といつも衝突する
　ので、できればそれは避けたい。

★ black sheep

家族や周囲の人にとっての「厄介者」「持て余し者」のこと。たとえ家族が
いるわけでなくても、black sheep of the familyという形でよく使います。
outcast（のけ者）、rogue（ごろつき）、square peg（不適応者）などの代わり
に使えます。昔、黒い羊は悪魔の印がついていると考えられ、白い羊より
価値が低いとされていました。それをやがて人間にあてはめて使うように
なったのです。

このフレーズは次のように使われます。

- My supervisor has been the black sheep of the family ever since he
　was rumored to have had an affair with his secretary.
　秘書と関係を持っているという噂がたって以来、上司は社内のつまはじき者だ。

- I dropped out of high school before graduation, and that has made me
　the black sheep of the family.
　高校を中退したせいで、ぼくは一家の面よごしとされている。

- My father got totally drunk at his brother's wedding and has been the
　black sheep of the family ever since.
　父は叔父の結婚式で酔いつぶれて以来、厄介者とされている。

               ----- The Henderson Arrows: Part XVI -----

The next morning dawned bright and clear with a cloudless
sky and a wonderful crispness to the air that is common to England
on late autumn mornings. Even Charing Cross Road looked like
something out of a romantic spy novel and could have been lifted
out of its location and replanted in Moscow with no questions asked.
People hurried along with scarves wrapped around their
necks and small clouds of animated breath dancing merrily before
them. Old men and women entered surgical appliance shops to stock
up on their winter supply of thermal underwear, young girls and boys
bounced along hand in hand to Foyles to stock up on the books they
forgot to purchase for their philosophy classes, middle-aged men
sidled furtively into bookstores with whitewashed windows, and
middle-aged women swept confidently up stairs to theatrical agents.
All, in other words, was bright and merry, and the taxi that pulled
up outside The Ship's Compass, deposited two very large men on
the pavement and drove away in the direction of Leicester Square
did nothing to spoil this atmosphere.
A passerby, taking in these two deposited monoliths, would
have thought them a jovial, chummy pair, and this passerby would not
have been mistaken. The two men in question, Sir Edward Horseworthy
and Sir Peter Arlington, were, in fact, on the best of terms.
When we left them last, it will be remembered, they were
both regarding each other with suspicion and staring daggers, but
several whisky and sodas with a few brandies on top produces the
most excellent elixir for friendship, with the effect that one hour
after our departure, they were slapping each other on the back and
laughing at the fact that both were fitted out with two copies of the
War Cry and one copy of the Young Soldier.
Their evening together led them far and wide. At twelve
o'clock they were seen in the Swiss Cottage accompanied by two
young blondes. One o'clock had found them at a discotheque in
Belsize Park, and two o'clock discovered them--minus the blondes--
staggering down Tottenham Court Road with their arms around each
other's necks, trailing a half-empty magnum of champagne.
Horseworthy had stayed at Arlington's club for the night,
and after a light breakfast of black coffee and Aspirin, they had ordered
a cab to spirit them around to Charing Cross Road.
“Well, here we are, Horsey, old chap. After you."
“Oh, no! You first, Arly, old boy."
“No, please! I insist."
“Well, if you're sure."
“It is my pleasure."
They entered the shop and walked over to the counter.
Bertram Cooper, having heard the bell on the door, left the grooming
of Fang and, opening the door from his back room, stopped dead, as
if hit by the corner of a table or door.
“Huh!" he said snootily, “It's you two, is it? Suppose
you've come round to gloat."
Sir Edward and Sir Peter exchanged glances. ‘What,' said
Sir Edward's, ‘it this old loony talking about?' and Sir Peter's answered,
‘Dashed if I know, Horsey, old chap.'
However, disregarding the bleatings of antique shopkeepers
who have screws loose, Arlington slapped his old pal on the back and
stepped forward to assume the mantle of spokesman.
“You remember us, do you?"
“Too bloody right."
“Well, in that case you will remember that we came in to
purchase the darts that belonged to the eminent Arnold ‘Doubles'
Henderson."
“How can I forget?"
“Getting down to brass tacks, you will also, no doubt, recall
that each of us offered you ten pounds on top of the other's offer."
“Huh!"
