の出版予定日が大幅遅れて、現在のところでは来年の７月に出版予定
となりました。

★ 「教養のある人と思われるための英会話集（仮称）」（DHC)は７月に出版。

And so we reach the end of the year. It has been a good year for
me, and I have met a lot of wonderful new people who I hope will
remain friends for many years. It was also a slightly sad year, in
the sense that I had to say goodbye to Harry Potter, who has
been an almost constant companion for the past three years. But,
things move on, and I congratulate JK Rowling for quitting when
she was at the top.

It has also been a very busy year. This is fine and I certainly have
no complaints, but my one regret is that I couldn't spend more
time with my grandchildren. They are growing daily, and I seem
to be missing out on their childhood.

So, what are my resolutions for 2008?

1. To spend more time with my family.
2. To increase the profits of Kirin and as many single-malt distilleries
in Scotland as I can.
3. To teach Coral (my dog) the meaning of the word "No!"
4. To write some of the most amazing books ever to have been
published.
5. To get my car fitted with a new set of tires.
6. To fix the closet door. (This has appeared on my resolution list
for the past three years...:-)
7. To learn how to answer my cell phone when it rings.
8. To encourage my wife to throw out some of the clothes she
never wears.
9. To remember people's birthdays.
10. To fasten my flies before I appear on television.

☆ ワン・ポイント英語

★ 感動

　辞書にはimpression、inspiration、emotion、excitementなどの語が
あげられています。しかし日常会話では、これらの語が「感動」という語
のニュアンスをうまく表せるとは限りません。とはいえ、ほかの語よりは
emotionに関連する語が使われることが多いようです。

☆ 状況 #1:感想「感動的だ」
　メアリは友人に、ジョンからプロポーズをされたときの話をしています。
ジョンはメアリを高級レストランに連れていき、特製デザートを注文
しました。ウェイターが覆いのかぶさった小さな皿を運んできて、メアリ
が覆いをあけると、そこには絹の上に置かれたエンゲージリングが
ありました。「あのときは感動しちゃった」と、メアリはこの話を締めく
くりました。英語ならばこう言うでしょう。

- It was so moving.
It was so touching.
It was so emotional.
　すごく感動的だったわ

- It really played on my heart strings.　
　感動で心が震えちゃった

　注：感動したときにはmovingやtouchingがよく使われます。これらは
形容詞なので、次のように名詞を修飾して使うこともできます。

- a moving speech（感動的なスピーチ）
- a touching movie（感動的な映画）
- a moving present（心にふれる贈り物）
- a touching moment（感動の瞬間）

☆ 状況 #2:行動「感動する」
　ジョンとメアリはジョンの両親の家に来ています。テレビの恋愛ドラマ
を観ていると、まもなくメアリは鼻をすすりはじめました。そしてドラマが
クライマックスに達するころには、涙が頬を伝ってとめどなく流れて
いました。「彼女は感動しやすいんだ」とジョンは両親に言いました。
英語ならばこう言うでしょう。

- Things like this always get to her.　
　こういうのを観ると、彼女はいつだって感動するんだ

- Her emotions are always close to the surface.　
　彼女はいつも感情を表に出すんだ

- She has a soft spot for romances.　
　彼女は恋愛ものに弱くってね

- She is very sensitive to romance.　
　彼女は恋愛ものにはすごく反応するんだ

注：このようなときには上記のせりふのほうが一般的ではありますが、
状況 #1で説明したmovingやtouchingを動詞にして以下のように
用いることもできます。

- She is easily moved / touched.（彼女は感動しやすいんだ）

----- The Henderson Arrows: Part IV -----

Sir Edward Horseworthy and Sir Peter Arlington were in
no position to listen to the chidings of a bag of flesh, bone and wool.
They were, as the saying goes, tied up for the nonce.
Sir Edward Horseworthy, coming from the direction of
Charing Cross Station, had failed to notice his archrival coming from
the other direction owing to his beady eyes playing around the shop
signs, and Sir Peter Arlington, coming from his club behind Tottenham
Court Road, where he had stayed the night, had failed to see his enemy
for similar reasons. They did, however, become aware of each other in
the doorway of Bertram Cooper’s shop.
Having jammed themselves in pretty solidly, they set about
the unpleasant task of seeing who could enter the premises first.
They grunted, they groaned, they heaved, they fumed. Sir
Edward said, “Arlington! You #$%\! of a %!$-headed son of a $`&#!.”
Sir Peter said, “You big fat lump of $%#!, Horseworthy. You’re not fit
to wipe the \&%# off my #%!. Move, damn you, before I kick you in
the $%#\!.” They grunted some more, they heaved some more, and
finally Sir Edward Horseworthy, finding an unexpected gap around his
fourth waistcoat button, took the advantage by inserting his elbow in
the space and pressing it home into Sir Peter’s midriff. Sir Peter gave
a high-pitched squeak, for the elbow had discovered his Achilles’
heel, and Sir Edward popped into the shop with a slight slurping noise.
Seeing himself a nose ahead of the game, he dived for
the counter and demanded that the proprietor produce darts.
“Darts?” echoed Bertram cautiously, “You did say darts,
didn’t you?”
“Stop dithering, damn you! I want the darts that belonged
to Arnold Henderson. Make it snappy!”
Sir Edward feverishly began scooping ten-pound notes from
his wallet, but Bertram, like a man in a dream who cannot believe his
ears, said, “Arnold ‘Doubles’ Henderson?”
“That’s right. Here’s fifty quid. Slip ‘em over.”
“I’ll give you sixty,” came a voice behind Sir Edward.
“Sixty?” repeated Bertie, his eyebrows shooting ceilingwards.
Sir Edward Horseworthy quivered with rage. This fat son-
of-a-toad--an unmarried toad at that--was once again trying to pull
a fast one. He had had the misfortune of making the acquaintance of
Sir Peter Arlington out in Malay, and still rued the day. Arlington had
received his knighthood on the same New Year’s Honors List for his
contribution to bilateral trade, and ever since then there had been
rivalry between them. Arlington, owning the rubber plantation whose
south-east corner touched the north-west corner of Sir Edward’s
sugar plantation, had counted the day lost when it had ended without
him putting one over on Sir Edward Horseworthy. While Sir Edward
was busy slipping it across the natives, Sir Peter was busy slipping
it across Sir Edward. Rubber, fetching a higher price on the inter-
national market than sugar, allowed Sir Peter to pay higher salaries
and the occasional bribe for sabotage. To dazzle a sugar plantation
worker with his gold and induce him to do nasty things to sugar
silos was, with Sir Peter, the work of a pleasant afternoon.
Sir Edward turned around slowly to try and influence
Arlington with his not insubstantial eyebrows. Taking in this
mountain of a man, he quivered jellyesquely as he realized that
once again he had lost another point in the Horseworthy-
Arlington stakes--Sir Peter had gained weight! It was a telling
blow under which Sir Edward spiritually staggered. Through all
the years of their rivalry, Sir Edward’s only claim to fame had
been his superior size over Arlington, and now, if the man hadn’t
stuffed pillows up his waistcoat as Horseworthy suspected, his
obesity had been relegated to a second-rate power.
“What did you say?” asked Sir Edward quietly,
clenching and unclenching the fists that would, at a moment’s
notice, fly forth and inflict injury to that puffy face.
“I said, ‘I’ll give you sixty.’ But I was not addressing
you.”
Sir Edward Horseworthy released the air from his lungs
in a soft whistle, like a duck-billed platypus who has swallowed a
hard-back crab and the blighter had caught hold of his uvula on the
way down. Without taking his eyes off the grinning Arlington, he
whispered, “Seventy.”
“Eighty,” responded Sir Peter jovially. And, let’s face
it, he had a right to be jovial. The only cloud in the peerless sky
of his soul had been, up until this day, his inferior weight, and now,
measuring himself up against Horseworthy with a practiced eye--
practiced from daily size-ups in front of a full length mirror--told
him that he had the edge by at least twenty pounds.
Sir Edward Horseworthy was not feeling so jovial. In
fact, given the chance, he would have liked to add weight to
Arlington by filling his esophagus with molten brass. He gritted
the teeth that had accompanied him to Malay and bit the bullet--
not an easy thing to do at the same time--and, in a choking voice,
said, “Ninety.”
“Look here, rat face,” said Sir Peter Arlington, pausing
to pass a large white handkerchief over his brow, “Unfortunately I
do not have the time to stand here bickering with you. I have a
business appointment in the Strand in twenty minutes.” He turned
his attention over to Bertram Cooper and continued, “Anything
this undersized blob offers I will add ten pounds to. I’ll be back
in the morning to collect the darts. Toodle-pip!”
