■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■ ┏━━┓ー 英字新聞で読もう！で、NY Times によりますと・・・ ┃＼／┃ー ┗━━┛ー ( No.345 2009/10/31 ) ■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■ 週 3回、The New York Times や The Japan Times から記事を一つ選んでお届 けします。（金曜日は復習号です）。NY Times は読者にエリート層を想定し た新聞ですから、ちょっぴり難しかったりもしますが、英語らしい英語が味わ えます。取り上げるのは、最初の2、3段落だけ。分からなくても、挑戦すると いう姿勢が大切です。いつか英語の海をスイスイ泳げるよう、このメルマガを 浮き輪代わりに使ってくださいな。 ■ 今週泳いだ英語の海は ■ さて、いきなり問題です。( )に入る語句は何でしょう。英字新聞を読む上 でも覚えておいたほうがいい言葉です。正解は下のほうにあります。 Salute All Cars, Kids. It’s a Rule in China. （ New York Times ） All the students at Luolang Elementary School, a yellow-and-orange concrete structure off a winding mountain road in southern China, know the key rules: Do not run in the halls. Take your seat before the bell rings. Raise your hand to ask a question. And oh, yes: Salute every passing car on your way to and from school. Education officials promoted the saluting edict to reduce traffic accidents and teach children （ 1 ）. Critics, who have posted thousands of negative comments about the policy on China’s electronic bulletin boards, beg to differ. “This is just pitiful,” wrote one in a post last year. Only （ 2 ） officials would burden children with such a requirement rather than install speed bumps, others insisted. This is hardly the only nation where local bureaucrats sometimes run a bit too free. But in China, where many local officials are less than well trained and only the party can eject them from office, local governments’（ 3 ） edicts are common enough that skewering them has become a favorite pastime of China’s Web users. The fetus survived and is now an 8-year-old boy. Three years later, pregnant again, she drank an herbal concoction that was supposed to induce abortion. That, too, failed. What drove Ms. Judilla, a 37-year-old manicurist, to such extreme measures is a story of personal tribulation familiar to many Filipino women. She and her unemployed husband are very poor ― barely able to buy vitamins for their youngest child, let alone send more than two of their older children to school. Abortion is illegal in the Philippines. Birth control and related health services have long been available to those who can afford to pay for them through the private medical system, but 70 percent of the population is too poor and depends on heavily （ 4 ） care.
