英字新聞で読もう！で、NY Times によりますと・・・
■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■ ┏━━┓ー 英字新聞で読もう！で、NY Times によりますと・・・ ┃＼／┃ー ┗━━┛ー ( No.286 2009/05/27 ) ■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■ 週3回、The New York Times や The Japan Times から記事を一つ選んでお届 けします。（金曜日は復習号です）。NY Times は読者にエリート層を想定し た新聞ですから、ちょっぴり難しかったりもしますが、英語らしい英語が味わ えます。取り上げるのは、最初の2、3段落だけ。分からなくても、挑戦すると いう姿勢が大切です。いつか英語の海をスイスイ泳げるよう、このメルマガを 浮き輪代わりに使ってくださいな。 ■ きょう泳ぐ英語の海は ■ North Korea Claims to Conduct 2nd Nuclear Test （ New York Times ） North Korea announced on Monday that it had successfully conducted its second nuclear test, defying international warnings and drastically raising the stakes in a global effort to get the recalcitrant Communist state to give up its nuclear weapons program. The North’s official news agency, KCNA, said “The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea successfully conducted one more underground nuclear test on May 25 as part of the measures to bolster up its nuclear deterrent for self-defense in every way as requested by its scientists and technicians.” Word of the test sent a shudder through Asian financial markets and clearly caught South Korea and the United States off guard. The news hit just as South Korea’s government and people were mourning the suicide of former President Roh Moo-hyun. And hours after the test was reported, South Korean state media reported that the North had fired a short-range missile. ■ まずは準備運動 ■ ・defy 無視する、逆らう、反攻する ・drastically 大々的に、大幅に、 ・recalcitrant （権力などに）抵抗する、反抗的な、御しがたい ・mourn 悲しみ嘆く、哀悼する ■ 泳ぐときには息継ぎしなくちゃ ■ North Korea announced on Monday / 北朝鮮は月曜日に発表した / that it had successfully conducted its second nuclear test, / それは成功的にその2度目の核実験を実施した / defying international warnings / 国際的な警告を無視しながら / and drastically raising the stakes in a global effort / そして大々的に世界の努力にいて賭け金を高めながら / to get the recalcitrant Communist state / 反抗的な共産主義国家を得るための / to give up its nuclear weapons program. / その核兵器計画をあきらめさせるために / The North’s official news agency, KCNA, said / 北の公式の通信社KCNAは言った / “The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea / 朝鮮民主主義人民共和国は / successfully conducted one more underground nuclear test on May 25 / 5月25日に成功的にもうひとつの地下核実験を実施した / as part of the measures / 措置の一環として / to bolster up its nuclear deterrent for self-defense / 自衛のための核抑止を強化するための / in every way as requested by its scientists and technicians.”/ その科学者や技術者によって要求されたようなあらゆる道において / Word of the test sent a shudder / 実験の言葉は震えを送った / through Asian financial markets / アジアの金融市場中に / and clearly caught South Korea and the United States off guard. / そして明らかにガードから離れていた韓国や米国を捕まえた / The news hit / そのニュースは当たった / just as South Korea’s government and people / ちょうど韓国の政府と人々が・・・ときに / were mourning the suicide of former President Roh Moo-hyun. / 前の大統領の盧武鉉の自殺を嘆き悲しんでいた / And hours after the test was reported, / その実験が報じられた数時間後に / South Korean state media reported / 韓国の国のメディアは報じた / that the North had fired a short-range missile. / 北は短距離のミサイルを発射していた / ■ 英語ってどんな海？ ■ というわけで今回は、北朝鮮の核実験のニュースを行きましょう。 ■ raise the stakes stakeは「賭け、賭け金」ですから、「賭け金を上げる」。まさしく言いえて 妙という表現です。でも比喩ですから、これをそのまま日本語の世界に移しか えてもしっくりいきません。要するに、国際社会にとって「リスクや困難さの 度合いが高まる、さらに深い関与を迫られる」ということです。 at stakeなら、「賭けられた、危機にある」。辞書で要チェックの単語です。 ■ bolster up bolsterは「長まくら」で、そこから「支え、支える、強化する」と動詞とし ても使います。upには意味を強める機能があります。 nuclear deterrentは「核抑止（力）」。核兵器を持つことで、他国に核攻撃 をさせないというやつですね。動詞形がdeterで「阻む、防ぐ、思いとどまら せる」、名詞形がdeterrenceです。 ■ send a shudder shudderは、恐怖などで「激しく震えること」です。そうしたモノではないも のをモノであるかのように「送る」（send）ことができるのが、英語の世界の 特徴なのだと思います。 The old castle gave me the creeps. （その古い城に私はぞっとした） よく使われますが、こういうのもそうですね。creepはもともと虫なんかが 「静かに動く、そっとはう」といった感じで、そこから背筋に冷たいものが流 れるような「ぞっとする感じ、不気味さ」。複数形にもなってしまうのですか ら、モノ化されているんでしょうね。 off guardは、ガード（警戒）を保った状態から離れた（off）ことを表してい ますので、「油断して、警戒を怠って」。catch・・・off guardで「・・・の 不意をつく」。catch（捕まえる）を用いるというのも、ちょっと厄介ですね。 意味はほとんどhitです。catchにはこんな用法もあります。 The door lock doesn't catch. （そのドアの鍵が掛からない） ====================================================== 【 英語学習おすすめツール 】 英英辞典デビューをするなら、 ロングマン現代英英辞典〈4訂新版〉【CD-ROM付】 http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/4342785722/ref=nosim/?tag=englishpaper-22 日本人ですから、英語はそのまんま理解じゃなくてもいいとも思いますが、 それでも、そのまんま理解したい〜！という野心満々な方は、 まず英英辞典を引くことでしょう。 （K.Andoh） ====================================================== ■ 日本の陸に上がってみると ■ 北朝鮮、2度目の核実験を実施 （ New York Times ） 北朝鮮は月曜日、同国が2度目の核実験を成功裏に実施したと発表した。国際 社会の警告は公然と無視され、共産主義の問題児国家に核兵器開発計画を断念 させようとしている世界的な取り組みは、ますます難しくなった。 北朝鮮の国営通信社KCNAによると、「朝鮮民主主義人民共和国は5月25日、2度 目の地下核実験を成功裏に実施した。これは、われわれの科学者、技術者たち の要求に従って、共和国の自衛的核抑止力をあらゆる面から強化するための措 置の一環である」 核実験という言葉にアジアの金融市場には戦慄が走った。韓国と米国は明らか に不意打ちを食らった。この知らせが飛び込んだのは、韓国政府と国民が盧武 鉉前大統領の自殺を悼んでいるさなかだった。核実験が報じられた数時間後に は、韓国国営メディアも、北朝鮮が短距離ミサイルを発射したと報じた。 ====================================================== 【 英語学習おすすめツール 】 英文法解説（江川泰一郎著） http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/4760820094/ref=nosim/?tag=englishpaper-22 英文法の確認は、これ１冊でOK！今日も、感謝です。 （K.Andoh） ====================================================== ■ もう一度、泳ごう ■ North Korea Claims to Conduct 2nd Nuclear Test （ New York Times ） North Korea announced on Monday that it had successfully conducted its second nuclear test, defying international warnings and drastically raising the stakes in a global effort to get the recalcitrant Communist state to give up its nuclear weapons program.
