■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■ ┏━━┓ー 英字新聞で読もう！で、NY Times によりますと・・・ ┃＼／┃ー ┗━━┛ー ( No.281 2009/05/15 ) ■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■□■ 週3回、The New York Times や The Japan Times から記事を一つ選んでお届 けします。（金曜日は復習号です）。NY Times は読者にエリート層を想定し た新聞ですから、ちょっぴり難しかったりもしますが、英語らしい英語が味わ えます。取り上げるのは、最初の2、3段落だけ。分からなくても、挑戦すると いう姿勢が大切です。いつか英語の海をスイスイ泳げるよう、このメルマガを 浮き輪代わりに使ってくださいな。 ■ 今週泳いだ英語の海は ■ さて、いきなり問題です。( )に入る語句は何でしょう。英字新聞を読む上 でも覚えておいたほうがいい言葉です。正解は下のほうにあります。 Recipient of Face Transplant Shares Her Story and Results （ New York Times ） Five years ago, a shotgun blast left a ghastly hole where the middle of Connie Culp’s face had been. Five months ago, she received a new face from a dead woman. Ms. Culp stepped forward on Tuesday to show the results of the nation’s first face transplant. Her new look was far from the （ 1 ）, noseless sight that had made children run away in horror. Ms. Culp’s expressions are still a bit wooden, but she can talk, smile, smell and taste food again. Her speech is at times difficult to understand. Her face is （ 2 ） and squarish, and her skin （ 3 ） in folds that doctors plan to pare away as her circulation improves and her nerves grow, animating new muscles. Mr. Ozawa had tried to ride out the controversy, criticizing the prosecutors for what he called a politically motivated investigation, while stopping short of accusing them of helping the unpopular Liberal Democrats. But the scandal appears to have further （ 5 ） Japanese voters’ views of both parties ahead of a national election that must be held by Sept. 10. Mr. Ozawa is known as one of the last of Japan’s shadow shoguns, having learned the art of Japan’s consensus-driven backroom politics as a young lawmaker from past prime ministers like Kakuei Tanaka, who invented the nation’s current version of pork-barrel politics.
