キリスト教圏では、どちらかと言えば日本のお正月のように、家族みんなが集まる大切なイベントがクリスマス。
今週号のTravelでは、ディケンズの名作『クリスマス・キャロル』に描かれたヴィクトリア朝時代のクリスマスを求めて、
カナダ、ブリティッシュ・コロンビア州の州都、その名もヴィクトリアを訪ねました。

ヴィクトリア朝時代の優雅なクリスマスをカナダで満喫

When we want to conjure up images of cozy Christmas gatherings and traditional holiday cheer, nothing surpasses the warmth and glow of the Victorian Era (1837-1901). 
It was a time of gas lanterns, whimsical architecture, proper manners and Dickens’ novels.
We can’t return to the past, but we can still enjoy some of the lasting influences of the Victorian Era. 
And what better place to find a cheery Victorian Christmas, I figured, than the city of Victoria itself?
This charming capital of British Columbia, Canada, is situated on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, an hour via ferry from the much larger city of Vancouver on the mainland.
Driving up from Oregon, a snowstorm nearly disrupted our plans. 
When we finally reached the heavily Asian-populated Vancouver suburb of Richmond, we felt lucky to find comfortable accommodations at the family-owned Accent Inn before ice forced the closure of the highway.
Lesley Bidlake, who was working the front desk, told us, “Richmond has dozens of sushi restaurants, 
but only one, called Posh, specializes in sukiyaki.” 
That was welcome news, and dining there filled us with warmth within. 
In the morning, it was clear enough to reach the British Columbia Ferry and sail pleasantly across to Vancouver Island.
Here we made another miscalculation, however. 
Instead of going directly to our mountaintop hotel, we decided to spend the day in downtown Victoria.
Our enthusiasm had been fired up by Vancouver resident Bridget Frewer, another ferry passenger, who’d recommended many city sights for us to see.
“Start with Victoria’s yacht-filled harbor,” she said. “It’s bordered by a majestic Parliament building, 
the Royal British Columbia Museum and the classic Fairmont Empress Hotel. 
And hidden within smaller streets, you’ll find chocolate makers, a Maritime Museum and Canada’s oldest Chinatown.”
