There are nice smells, and there are fowl smells and what is pleasant for one is not necessarily pleasant for another. Smells often evoke memories of childhood or other significant points in our lives. Take me for instance. I love the smell of paint and petroleum. The smell of paint reminds me of my grandfather’s workshop and the good times we spent together. The smell of petroleum reminds me of the time my mother crashed the car. Many of you may be thinking that this is an example of a not-so-pleasant smell, but for me, everything about it is good because it finally meant my parents bought a new car, sparing me from the endless embarrassment caused by being driven around in a banger. Do you have a smell that you are fond of? How about a smell which you would rather not encounter again? Yukari: Yeah, I know. But our pay hasn’t! Megumi: Right! But we sure deserve more money! Yukari: 全くその通り! チッチッ… 10秒… チッチッ… 20秒… チッチッ… 30秒…はい、時間です！！ ◆ブライアン先生の解説 模範解答： You can say that again. そして、その他の僕のサンプルアンサーと解説です～～ 1) You said it / You’ve said it 2) Exactly When somebody says something that you strongly believe to also be true, or something is blatantly obvious, you can use the phrase “you can say that again”. Depending on the situation and its delivery it can come across as sarcastic. In the above example, however, it is an expression of agreement and endorsement of the previous speaker’s comment. However, the phrase is largely rhetorical and if you hear this phrase in a conversation, repetition of your comment is not necessary. 自分もその通りだと強く信じていることをほかの人が言ったとき、あるいは、 あることが言うまでもなく明らかであるときに、“you can say that again” という表現を使うことができます。状況や言い方によっては、皮肉にも聞こえ ます。上記の例では、コメントした人に対する同意と支持の表現になります。 ただ、このフレーズは修辞的であり、この言い回しを会話の中で聞いた場合は、 自分のコメントを繰り返す必要はありません。 ◆日本語訳 めぐみ: ねえ、ゆかり、新しい部長が来てから私たちの仕事の量が増えたみたい。 ゆかり: うん、知ってる。でも給料は増えてないわ! めぐみ: そうよね! でも私たち、もっともらう価値あるわよね! ゆかり: 全くその通りよ! では宿題です～～ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ■３■ 次回の問題 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ◆次回のdialogue Megumi: I feel so sleepy today, Yukari.
