こんにちは！ブライアンです。

Many people like paper money because bills are light and easy to carry, 
but a week ago I read a BBC news story about an American man in Cincinnati, 
Ohio, named James Jones, who hates paper money. For several years Mr. Jones 
saved money to buy himself a new truck, but he did not keep his money in 
a bank because he said he did not trust banks. Instead, he kept all of his
money at home. He also said that he did not like paper money because it 
can easily get burned in a fire, so he saved all of his money in coins. 
Earlier this month when Mr. Jones went to a car dealership to buy his new, 
$16,000 truck, he paid for it with 16 large cans full of coins.

ジェームズ・ジョーンズというアメリカ人は、お札は燃えてしまうので嫌いで、
銀行も信用しない人だったものだから、新しいトラックを購入するのに、何と
コインをセッセと家の中で貯めました。ですから、ディーラーのもとに＄16,000の
トラックを買いに行った時は、16もの大きな缶いっぱいのコインで支払った
そうです。

榊原さんはトムリンソンさんに、なぜ会社が営業担当者の数を減らしているかを
説明している。

◆本日のDialogue：

Mr. Sagakibara: But our costs have been rising steadily over the past 
　　　　　　　　18 months, and our profits have been steadily falling.
　　　　　　　  Our company’s shareholders* wanted us to do something
                to cut costs fast, and cutting our personnel costs was 
                the quickest and easiest way to do that.　　*株主　

Mr. Tomlinson:  So you’re saying that our executives* took the 安易な
                抜け道, instead of looking for more difficult, but more
                effective ways to cut costs.      　　　*役員

模範解答： took the easy way out

1)  chose to do something simple because sometimes “simple is best”

2) chose the quickest, but maybe not the best action


We can“get out of”, or escape from a bad situation by finding a 
“way” to solve to the problem that is causing it. Sometimes there 
is more than one way to solve a problem and we must choose, or “take” 
one of those choices. Mr. Tomlinson is talking about a choice that has 
already been made, so he says “took” instead of “take”. The 
executives chose a simple or “easy” solution, so Mr. Tomlinson said 
they “took the easy way out”.  

問題などを解決するときに、いくつか選択肢がある時があります。Take を
使っているのは、いくつかあるからで、すでにその選択がとられたため、
take ではなく、took　使っています。


◆日本語訳


榊原さん: けれども、私たちの会社でかかる費用はこの18ヶ月間徐々に高く
　　　　　なっていて、利益は少しずつ下がってきているんですよ。わが社の
　　　　　株主たちは早く費用を削減することを望んでいて、それをする最も
　　　　　早くて簡単な方法は事件費を削減することだったんですよね。

トムリンソンさん:  つまり、会社の役員たちは、費用削減のためにはもっと
　　　　　難しいけれど、効果的な方法よりも、安易な抜け道をとったという
　　　　　ことですか。
