Many false friends (a word that means one thing in one language and something very different in another) can be found on menus and supermarket shelves. Take for example the ‘Viking’ in Japan. You are unlikely to see this offered in UK restaurants as it refers to a soldier of times long passed. You are more likely to see posters offering a ‘buffet’ or ‘all you can eat’ meals. Maybe in Japan, you like the taste of satsuma, don’t order it in the UK or USA as you will be buying a small orange or mikan. Finally, if you like to drink cider after a meal, be aware that if you drink it in the West, you might end up rather drunk, as cider there is an alcoholic drink made from fermented apples. Some are bigger than others and some hang around longer than others. Thus, some people can be more forgiving than others about problems one has created for them. A more forgiving person is likely to use the idiom above or one of the two alternative phrases. To explain this idiom, imagine a bridge over a river. The water is usually fast-flowing. As a result, the water you could see a second ago is now further along the river.
