So it is not surprising then, that for many people, their favorite picture or painting has some relevance to an event or period in their life. Indeed. Several painters are said to depict periods in their own lives through their pictures. Munch, Dali and Lowry are just three examples. So that got me thinking about two questions: which picture or painting has a special meaning in my life, and if I were to draw or paint a picture representing a period or event in my life, what would one see. The first is a painting of flowers on the Colorado River near the Grand Canyon. The painting is symbolic not only of my country and my time growing up there, but the special relationship I shared with nature as a child. The second question is more difficult to answer. The painting would be serious at first glance, but the closer you look the more at ease it would be. This would be reflective of my personality. How about you? I think I will write my letter of resignation for Mr. Sato at lunchtime. Yukari: Be careful, Megumi. 取らぬタヌキの皮算用しちゃダメよ! チッチッ… 10秒… チッチッ… 20秒… チッチッ… 30秒…はい、時間です！！ ◆ブライアン先生の解説 模範解答： Don’t count your chickens before they hatch そして、その他の僕のサンプルアンサーと解説です～～ 1) Don’t be too hasty in making decisions before the results are known for sure 2) What you are expecting might not happen In this dialogue, although the results of Megumi’s interview are not known, she has concluded by the atmosphere that she has been successful in getting a position with the company. This is dangerous thinking as she cannot possibly know what someone else is thinking unless they are told. Thus, to jump to conclusions about a possible outcome, making hasty decisions before results are known or trying to predict what will happen is counting your chickens before they hatch. Try to imagine a hen laying eggs. If she lays 10 eggs, it does not necessarily mean that 10 chicks will hatch as some of the eggs may be broken. この会話では、めぐみの面接の結果が分かっていないのにもかかわらず、 めぐみはその雰囲気によってその会社に就職できると決めつけてしまい ました。これは、教えられない限り、他の人が何を考えているのか見当が つかないので、危険な考え方です。このようにして、起こりうる結果に対して 早合点してしまうこと、結果が知らされる前に早まってしまったり、何が 起こるのか予想しようとするのは、counting your chickens before they hatch （直訳：ひながかえる前に鶏を数える）になります。めんどりが卵を 産んでいるところを想像してみて下さい。もし１０個の卵を産んだら、一部の 卵は割れているかもしれないので、必ずしも１０羽のひながかえるとは 限らないのです。 ◆日本語訳 ゆかり: ハロー、めぐみ。面接どうだった？ めぐみ: 自信たっぷりよ。私のこととても気に入ってくれたみたいで、 良い印象を与えたと思う。 ゆかり: よかったじゃない。私もうれしいわ。 めぐみ: ありがとう、ゆかり。昼休みに、佐藤さん宛てに退職届を書くわ。 ゆかり: めぐみ、気をつけて。 取らぬタヌキの皮算用しちゃダメよ! では宿題です～～ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ■３■ 次回の問題 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ◆次回のdialogue Megumi: Yukari, I am so sorry about Friday.
