Every year, starting around late September or early October, each and every boy wanted to be crowned the conker champion. We would hunt for the winning conker. The biggest, the hardest, the strongest. We would soak them in vinegar, coat them with nail varnish even, and then attach them to lengths of string. The idea was to flick your conker at your opponents and hope that it would smash to pieces. I have never seen this craze in Japan, but I am sure many people would enjoy it. Wouldn’t you? It is a fairly informal idiom used in this sense, but can also be used to get oneself out of a tricky situation. For example, if X says to Y “You said that ----“ and if Y thought that what he really said was true, but later turns out not to be, we can also use this idiom.
