I see business men on trains and in restaurants tapping away on their laptops. I see children, teenagers and sometimes even housewives exercising their thumbs on pocket-sized games consoles. There can be no denying that such gadgets have become part of our daily lives. Some believe this is a good thing, some believe it’s a bad thing, but whichever way we look at it, I know I would find it very hard to live without my mobile phone. Why? Because it is much more than just a phone. My mobile phone is much more than simply a means to contact people. It is a camera, a voice recorder, it provides access to the internet, it’s a games console, an MP3 player and even a GPS. Quite literally, I would be lost without this trusty gadget. So that got me thinking about other people and their lifelines. What’s yours? There is a big difference between literal and figurative language. This idiom is obviously figurative. Not a lot is known about the origins of this idiom and it is difficult to find any connection between it and its implied meaning. However, what is known, as a result of looking at the situations it has been used, is that it can be used to describe oneself or others when they are very happy. To get a general idea, you might like to find the Carpenter’s song called ‘On top of the world’.
