Many of my friends played the piano, the violin, the flute, the tuba and even the bassoon. I would become envious when they could play a recognizable piece with very little effort. I can remember several times when I begged my parents to buy ― or even rent ― a musical instrument but was always told that the family budget cannot stretch to that. Now though, I may have found a solution for the countless people like myself who desire to pick up an instrument and play a tune. The answer can be found in your fridges at home or in the fruit and vegetable aisles at your local supermarket. That’s right, you can now play carrots, broccoli and a range of other foods. Miyuki is きわどいことをしている, isn’t she. 皆さんが Yukari だったら、どのように英語でたずねますか？ 30秒で、考えてみてください。 チッチッ… 10秒… チッチッ… 20秒… チッチッ… 30秒…はい、時間です！！ ◆ブライアン先生の解説 模範解答： skating on thin ice そして、その他の僕のサンプルアンサーと解説です～～ 1) to take a big risk/be in a risky situation 2) getting close to failure/jeopardizing previously good work When the behavior or actions of others appear to be risky or dangerous, it is often said that they are skating on thin ice. If one were to skate on thin ice, it is likely to crack and they would fall into the water below and likely sink. Thus, the idiom skate on thin ice’ also signifies the likelihood of failure. It should now be clear that this idiom has negative connotations. This is the reason that the idiom is used instead of the two alternative phrases above which are more direct. 他の人の態度や行動がきわどかったり危険なとき、skating on thin ice という表現を使います。もし薄い氷の上をスケートするようなものなら、 おそらく氷は割れて、水に落ちてしまうことでしょう。それがこのイディオム の意味するものなのです。この表現は、マイナスの意味も含んでいることが 明らかになったかと思います。そのため、今回は他のもっと直接的な2例では なく、この表現が使われたのです。 ◆日本語訳 ゆかり: めぐみ、みゆきが何を計画しているか聞いた？ めぐみ: ううん、何? ゆかり: みゆきはライバル会社で働く友達がいるんだけど、なんでもみゆき、 彼に、会社の丸秘情報を分かち合うみたいよ。 めぐみ: 本当? みゆき、きわどいことをしているわね。 では宿題です～～ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ■３■ 次回の問題 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ◆次回のdialogue： Yukari: (banging the top of her computer monitor) Come on, you stupid thing!
