  To an historian of the Twentieth Century like myself, the title “Social Research for
the Enhancement of Human Well-being” inevitably triggers a slight suspicion. As a
discipline, or perhaps rather a tribe, historians are mostly averse to philanthropic
aspirations in research. The past century saw, and its historians see, a good amount
of 'scientific' social ‘betterment’ with disastrous consequences, not least by, say,
the self-proclaimed ‘thousand year empire’, or the ‘midwives of history’. I was
slightly apprehensive, hence, when starting my current fellowship 10 months ago, of
becoming entangled in an institution devoted to, to use the Popperian term, utopian
social engineering. There are undoubtedly many things necessary for Human
Wellbeing, but that sociology could be one of them seemed unlikely.

Having worked at the COE for nine moths, however, I must admit my
reservations were unjustified. Not because of a lack of ambition to change society for
the better, for there proved to be quite a bit of that in this COE. Ambitions remained,
however, remarkably concrete. Not least because of the strong association of social
science with social work, aloof aspirations rarely lost touch with the actual problems
of real life unhappiness. While there has been, and remains, space for a degree of
utopianism in the program, concerns with existing unhappiness, and the need to
address it, seemed never to disappear from view.

A second important aspect of this COE program, I believe, is its emphasis on the
study of Happiness as a crucial step towards establishing social science for Happiness.
This is not as obvious as it may seem. Indeed, happiness studies are a remarkably
young sub-discipline of the social sciences. In the COE, this approach has not only
been embraced, and close collaboration with its practitioners worldwide established,
but it has also mustered considerable innovation. The overriding aim, as the title of a
recent publication suggests, has been to propose an alternative sociology which can
help establish human happiness, not to take the more normative, and paternalistic,
approach of establishing designing a society that can achieve this.

Both the above qualities of the current COE have contributed to a further
defining characteristic, namely its focus on those parts of the world, and those groups
in society, that suffer acute unhappiness. Just as Alfred Marshall pointed out that the
existence of poverty was the justification for the study of economics, the widespread
unhappiness in the world is an obvious ground for the study of (un)happiness. This has
resulted in a focus on countries and areas, as well as groups and individuals, who are
less well off than should be acceptable. From African deaf to Japanese-American
A-bomb victims, the unfortunate are never out of focus.

Geographically, the COE is inevitably focused to a large extent on the poorer
parts of the world. For me personally, as a European, this made the experience doubly
disorientating, and doubly rewarding. Not only did I gain a new perspective on the
world, from non-western Japan, but also entering a research institute in which a very
considerable amount of attention was devoted to (other) non-western countries. I do
believe, on the other hand, that this is one of the strengths of the COE that could do
with more attention. Japan may not be a western culture, but Africans, South Asians
and other foreign non-western people are not exactly crowding the streets of
Nishinomiya -or the university hallways. The number of European and American
visitors to the COE far exceeded the number of third-world researchers, at least in the
time I have spend here. Poorer or developing countries, for a variety of reasons, still
appear to be objects of study much more than partners for collaboration.

That said, the COE has made considerable strides in reforming social sciences.
Not only by formulating theories or doing empirical research, but also by setting an
example. It has done so through the production of several volumes which distinguish
themselves by their broad and creative methodology, by collaborating with foreign
partners, and by extending valuable opportunities to outsiders. To have been one of
those, and by now hopefully a bit of an insider, has thus far been an honour and a
pleasure.

私はCOEリサーチアシスタントとして、アニメーション『暴力の風景』（監督：荻野昌
弘、 2005）の製作に関わったのをきっかけとして、現在はアニメーションと社会の関わ
りについて研究をすすめている。ここでは、本プログラムの「回顧と展望」として、私自
身が関わったアニメーション関連の経験を振り返りたい。

2003年の終わりから2005年の夏ごろまでは、アニメーション製作に携わった。アニメー
ションは13シーンに分けているが、シーンごとにミーティングを行い、製作、修正を行っ
てきた。製作にかかわる人々が、シーンごとに風景のイメージを共有するために、風景の
構成要素となる素材は、われわれが調査で得た映像資料に加えて、新たにロケハンを行っ
たり、インターネットの画像等を利用して収集したりと、プロの映像クリエーターの方々
との共同作業は、貴重な経験になった。

そして、2005年の2月に、そのアニメーションを用いたインターネット調査を行った。イ
ンターネットとアニメーションを組み合わせた画期的な調査であったと思う。この調査の
結果については、荻野昌弘教授との共著論文「語りえぬものを問う―社会調査におけるア
ニメーション利用の可能性」（『先端社会研究』第4号，関西学院大学出版会: 205-231、
2006）として、発表させていただいた。

また、若手研究者が主体となって開催される合同ゼミでは、論文執筆の大きな力となっ
た。この合同ゼミで報告したのがきっかけとなり、『ソシオロジ』や『社会学評論』など
に論文として掲載されたものが多くあるように思う。私も、例外ではなく、「戦争とアニ
メーション―職業としてのアニメーターの誕生プロセスについての考察から」（『ソシオ
ロジ』159号: 87-102、2007）を発表することができた。

アニメーション製作のような新しい挑戦により、私の研究も有意義なものとなった。今後
も、アニメーションを軸に研究を進めていけたらと思う。
