我々の会は度々色々な国の人から話を聞くことを柱としている。1993年5月に始まり、翌月の6月にはインドネシアのムスリム(イスラム教徒)がゲストだった。
その当時は、イスラムは遠い存在で、ほとんどその知識を持っていなかったが、それを最初としていろいろな国のムスリムをゲストとして迎えることになった。

東南アジアからはインドネシア、マレーシア、南アジアからはバングラデシュ、インド、パキスタンの人が来た。
中東からはイラン、トルコ、ヨルダン、シリア、北アフリカからはエジプト、チュニジア、アルジェリア、マリ、セネガルの人が来た。

そういう人と接していくうちに、イスラム教の戒律や、同じイスラム教でも地域差、個人差があることなどが分かってきた。

マレーシアの家族を招いたときの夕食会で、奥さん用に豚肉抜きのスープを注文したら、ハムが少し入っていた。奥さんは口の中のものを出して一騒ぎになった。
同じ東南アジアのイスラム国家でも、概してマレーシアのムスリムの方がインドネシアのムスリムより戒律を厳しく守っているように思える。

インドネシアは総人口が２億2000万もあり、ムスリムの比率（88％）も大きいのでムスリム人口は世界一である。
マレーシアはムスリムの比率はインドネシアほど大きくないが、イスラム教が国教で、元首の国王は、スルタン会議で互選される独特の制度を持っている。
2000年の調査で、イスラム教60.4％、仏教19.2% 、キリスト教9.1％、ヒンズー教6.3％、儒教、道教、その他2.6％となっている。
イスラム教以外の民族、宗教にも配慮して、祝祭日には中国正月、ヒンズー教の正月、釈迦誕生日などを取り入れている。

インドネシアではイスラム教が大多数であるが、憲法で信教の自由が保障されている。それで、さまざまな宗教が混在している。

マレーシア同様の配慮で中国、ヒンズー教正月、仏教の祭りも祝祭日になっている。バリ島のほとんどの住民がヒンズー教徒であるのはおもしろい。

インドネシアからマレーシア、更にバングラデシュ、インドと北西に進み、更にパキスタン、イランと北西に進むと、イスラム教の総本山、サウジアラビアに出る。
このように辿っていくと、西に行くほどイスラム教の戒律を守る厳しさが強くなっていくように思える。

インドネシアの人に話をしに来てもらったとき、たまたまパキスタンの人が参加していた。二人ともムスリムだった。
インドネシアの人が、性的なことをあからさまに話していたので、パキスタンの人は「そんなことは、パキスタンでは誰も口にしない」と驚いていた。
東南アジアは内面を重視し、外面に比較的寛大なスーフィズムが浸透しているとのこと。酒を飲むムスリムも多いそうだ。

パキスタンは人口が１億5000万もあり、ムスリム人口の比率も97％もあるので、ムスリム人口は世界第2位である。
イスラム教は国教であるだけ、戒律に厳しい人が多いのかも知れない。

バングラデシュの人でラマダン期間中、食事をしていた人がいた。形より心の問題だと言っていたが、こういう人はバングラデシュでは珍しいかもしれない。
バングラデシュはムスリム人口の比率が90％で、イスラム教は国教であるが、9％のヒンドゥー教、1％以下の仏教、キリスト教のための祝祭日も設定してある。

インドは人口が約10億もあるので、ムスリム人口の率は14％しかないのに、ムスリム人口は世界第3位である。でもイスラム国家とは言えない。
戦後インドからパキスタンとバングラデシュが分離独立したことを考えると、宗教と国との関係は強いし、複雑なことが分かる。

イランはハタミ政権後、社会の自由化が進展してきている。99％がムスリムで、イスラム教が国教だが、ゾロアスター教、ユダヤ教、キリスト教は公認されている。

イスラム教は、国籍を超えて、同じムスリム同士との意識が強い。
短期間日本に研究に来ていたエジプト人から我々の会のゲストを二人紹介してもらった。一人はインド人、一人はマリ人だった。
そのエジプト人は横のつながりが強く布教にも熱心だった。ムスリムはどの国の人でも「アッサラーム　アレイコム」（あなたに平安を）の挨拶が通じると教わった。
エジプトは、ビンラディンの出生地で、サウジアラビアの隣の国だけあり、イスラム教に深く関わっている人が多いようだ。
94％がムスリムであり、イスラム教が国教であるが、政教分離で宗教政党を認めていない。

サウジアラビアはイスラム教の本家だけあり、イスラム教が国教で、事実上他の宗教を信仰することは認められていない。国民は100％ムスリムだそうだ。
イスラム教の聖地メッカがあり、世界各地から巡礼者が訪れ、イスラム世界における影響力が大きい。イスラム国家の中でも特別戒律を厳しく課している。
女性による自動車の運転の禁止やヘジャブ（ベール）の着用が義務付けられている。飲酒やポルノ類の持込などに対しては重刑が課せられる。

エジプトから西のチュニジア、アルジェリア、マリ、セネガル、それに中東のシリア、ヨルダンはムスリム人口がいずれも90％を超えている。
マリ、シリア以外はイスラム教が国教になっている。シリアの場合、国教でないが大統領の宗教はイスラム教、イスラム法が法律の主な源であると憲法で定めている。

最初に挙げた国の地域以外で、イスラム地域として落とせないのは中央アジア５カ国であろう。
ロシアに隣接しているカザフスタンは、ロシア正教徒が44％いるのでもスリムは47％であるが、キルギスは75％、他の３カ国は90％に近い。
この地域では、アラブ諸国のようなイスラム教＝国教ではなく、世俗政党が国権を握るという図式になっている。

The main activity of our society is to listen to people from various countries.
It started in May, 1993 and the next month, in June, we invited Indonesian Muslim as a guest.
In those days I felt Islam is very far and I had little idea about Islam.
We invited Muslims from various countries with the Indonesian workshop as the starting point.

In Southeast Asia we invited people from Indonesia and Malaysia, and in South Asia, people from Bangladesh , India and Pakistan.
In the Middle East we invited people from Iran, Turkey, Jordan and Syria, in North Africa, people from Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Mali and Senegal.

As I kept in touch with such people, I got to understand Islamic precepts and the difference in Islam among regions and among people.
At the dinner party held when we invited a Malaysian family I ordered soup without pork for the wife.
There were a few small pieces of ham in the soup.
A fuss happened with her taking the small pieces out of her mouth.
In spite of the same Islamic countries in Southeast Asia I guess Muslims in Malaysia generally observe the precepts more seriously than in Indonesia.

Indonesia has a population of as many as 220,000,000 and the percentage(88%) of Muslims is big.
So the population of Muslims is the biggest in the world.

The percentage of Muslims in Malaysia is not so big as in Indonesia,.
But Islam is the state religion and the King, the head of state, is elected by mutual vote in the conference of sultans. It is a unique system.
In a survey done in 2000 Islam 60.4%, Buddhism 19.2%, Christianity 9.1%, Hindu 6,3%, Confucianism, Taoism and others 2.6% is shown.
Races and Religions except Islam are taken into consideration. Chinese and Hindu New Year's Days, and Buddha's birthday are taken into holidays.

In Indonesia the majority of the religions is Islam but the freedom of religion is guaranteed in the constitution.
So, various religions are intermingled.

Giving the same consideration as Malaysia does, Indonesia has Chinese and Hindu New year's Days, a Buddhism festival as holidays.
It is interesting that almost all the residents in Bali are Hindus.

If you go from Indonesia to Malaysia, then go northwest to Bangladesh, India, and then go northwest to Pakistan, Iran, you will reach Saudi Arabia.
It is the headquarters of Islam.
I think people come to observe religious precepts more seriously as you follow this route farther on.

When an Indonesian came to talk to us, a Pakistani happened to join us. Both of the two were Muslims.
The Indonesian spoke frankly about sexual matters, so the Pakistani was surprised and said, "No one speaks abut such matters in Pakistan."
They say Sufism, which attaches importance to the interior and is comparatively generous to the exterior, is prevailing in Southeast Asia.
They say quite a few Muslims take alcoholic drinks.

Pakistan has a population of as many as 150,000,000 and the percentage of Muslim population is also as many as 97%.
She has the second biggest Muslim population in the world. Islam is the state religion.
Because of this many people may observe religious precepts seriously.

A Bangladeshi had meals during Ramadan. He said, "Heart is more important than form." But such people may be rare in Bangladesh.
In Bangladesh the percentage of Muslim population is 90%.
Although Islam is the state religion, holidays for Hindus(9%), Buddhists and Christians(less than 1%) are set.

The Muslim population in India is the third biggest in the world, though the ratio of the Muslim population is only14%.
It is because she has a population of as many as about 1,000,000,000. She is not called an Islamic country
Pakistan and Bangladesh were separated from India after the war. It makes me think that religion and countries have a strong and complicated relation.

In Iran the liberation of the society has developed since Hatami government was established. 99% of the people are Muslims.
Islam is the state religion, but Zoroastrianism, Judaism and Christianity are approved officially.

Muslims have a strong idea of compatriots among Muslims regardless of nationalities.
An Egyptian staying in Japan to research for a short time introduced two Muslims for our society. One was an Indian, and the other was a Malian.
The Egyptian knew many people and was eager to preach Islam.
He taught me Muslims of any country understand the greeting 'Assalam alaikum (Peace for you)'
Bin Laden was born in Egypt. Egypt is a country next to Saudi Arabia. So it seems that many people are devoted to Islam
94% of the people are Muslims and Islam is the state religion.
But she adopts the separation of religion and politics and religious political parties are not approved.

As may be expected from the headquarter of Islam, in Saudi Arabia Islam is the state religion and believing other religions is not approved.
Thy say 100% of the people are Muslims.
Mecca, the Islamic sacred place, is in the country and pilgrims from all over the world visit there.
So Saudi Arabia is influential in Islamic world. She imposes precepts the most serious in the Islamic countries.
Women are prohibited to ride bicycles and the wearing of hejab(veils) is forced. A heavy penalty is imposed for drinking and bringing in pornography.

In Tunisia, Algeria, Mali, Senegal to the west of Egypt, and in Syria, Jordan in the Mideast, the population of Muslims is more than 90% respectably.
Islam is the state religion except Mali and Syria.
In Syria it is decided in the constitution that the president's religion is Islam and Islamic law is the prime source of the national law.

Among the regions besides the regions written at the beginning, the five countries in Central Asia cannot be omitted.
In Kazakhstan adjoining Russia Russian Orthodox people account for 44% of the population, so Muslims are no more than 47%.
But in Kirghiz Muslims stand for 75% and in other three countries Muslims stand for nearly 90% respectively.
'Islam= the state religion' does not apply to this region unlike Arabic countries and   secular political parties rule the countries in this region.
