フィンランドは北欧の国だということを知っている人は多いと思うが、地図を見てここだと指せる人は少ないのではないかと思う。
私も、スウェーデン、ノルウェーと共にスカンジナビア半島にあるのだと思っていたが、半島の根本にあることを知った。
スカンジナビアとは半島にあるスウェーデンとノルウェーと、ドイツの北にあるデンマーク
を総称した地域の呼び名である。
この3カ国にフィンランドとアイスランドを加えた5カ国が北欧と呼ばれている。

地図を見るとフィンランドはとても大きい国に見えるが、日本の90％の面積である。それだけ北に位置しているわけでアイスランドに次いで世界最北にある国だ。
４分の１が北極圏にあるので、そこでは真夏に全然太陽の沈まない白夜が体験できる。ラップランド地方はまさにそういう場所である。
オーロラが観測できる地域でもあり、北に行くほど多くオーロラが現れる。
そのような北端の国だから無論寒いが、暖流の影響で寒さが和らいでいる。と言っても、昨日は-3℃だったが今日は-20℃なんていうことがざらにあるそうだ。

森と湖の国と呼ばれているだけあり、国土の70％が森林、10％が湖である。湖の数はなんと18万以上もあるとのこと。
森と湖の国といわれるフィンランドらしさを味わうのにもっともふさわしいのが、「湖水地方」ともいわれるフィンランド東部のカレリア地方である。
地図を見ると大きな湖の中に土地が広がっているようにも見える。多くの運河のような湖が複雑に入り組んでいる。

フィンランド人が誇りにしている三つのSがある。Sibelius（シベリウス）、Sauna（サウナ）、Sisu（フィンランド魂）だそうだ。

シベリウスは交響詩「フィンランディア」で有名だ。この曲は情熱的なメロディーとリズムを持っているだけでなく、フィンランド人に独立への夢を駆り立てた。
作曲した1900年頃は、東隣のロシアの政治的な圧力下にあり、西隣のスウェーデンからは文化的圧迫を受けていたので、政治的なそして文化的な独立であった。

サウナは520万の人口のこの国に100万以上あるとのこと。大抵の家にサウナがあり、アパートと職場には普通共同のサウナが設置されているそうだ。
尤も、日本の風呂のようなものだと考えると、驚くに当たらないかもしれない。

Sisu は厳しい自然や強国からの圧迫などにめげず、チャレンジしていく強さを表す哲学的な概念らしい。

４番目の 'S' を作るとしたらSanta Claus(サンタクロース)ではなかろうか。ラップランドの入口にあるロヴァニエミの郊外にはサンタクロース村がある。
その村の郵便局にはサンタクロース宛に、全世界から毎年46万通の手紙が届くそうだ。

日本でも人気者のムーミンは、フィンランドの作家トーベ・ヤンソンが25年間にわたって描き続けたものが元になっている。何回か切手が発行された。

よく知られている人にバーヴォ・ヌルミがいる。1920年代を代表する中長距離走者で、1920年から1928年の間、オリンピックで合計9個の金メダルを獲得した。
1932年のオリンピックではプロとみなされて参加することはできなかった。

日本に帰化したフィンランド人にツルネン・マルティがいる。1967年ルーテル派の宣教師として来日。その後政治に関わり、4年前参議院議員に繰り上げ当選。
「青い目の議員が行く」など多数図書がある。「源氏物語」や「氷点」などをフィンランド語に訳して日本を紹介。

フィンランド人は、他の北欧諸国と同様、ほとんどルーテル教会に属している。フィンランドの人から福山で宣教しているフィンランド人牧師を紹介してもらった。

フィンランド人には日本が好きな人が多いそうだ。主な理由は日露戦争で、圧政を受けているロシアを日本が破ったということにあるらしい。
日露戦争後はロシアは圧政の手を緩めたそうだ。そしてフィンランド人の権利がだんだん拡大していき、ヨーロッパで始めての婦人参政権が誕生した。

私がインターネットでチャットしているフィンランドの高校生は大の日本好きで、日本のことを良く知っているし、大学は関西の大学に入りたがっている。
６月から８月にかけて宮古島から北海道まで旅をして、日本の隅々まで見て歩く予定を立てている。「徒然草」「武士道」などを読んでいるそうで驚く。

私たちの会に、ゲストとしてフィンランド人を招いたことがある。日本に来ていると時々フィンランド語が聞こえてくると思うことがあると言っていた。
[例]　Susi(スシ)＝狼、kana(カナ)＝めんどり、sama(サマ)＝同じ、kissa(キッサ)＝猫
joi(ヨイ)＝飲んだ、koko(ココ)＝全部、suu(スウ)＝口、totta kai(トッタカイ)＝勿論

ヨーロッパの言語はほとんどすべてがインド・ヨーロッパ語族に入っているが、フィンランド語はエストニア語、ハンガリー語と共にウラル語族である。
だから、両隣のスウェーデン、ロシアとは全然言葉が違う。

公用語はフィンランド語とスウェーデン語であるが、スウェーデン語の話者は6％に過ぎない。自治領オーランドはスウェーデン語だけが公用語である。

3年ごとに行われている国際学力到達度調査では、フィンランドが２回連続で世界のトップを走っていることで注目を集めている。
フィンランドの教育についていろいろ分析がなされているが、助け合い学習、総合的な教育、
教員の創造性尊重、優秀な教員確保などがその原因のようである。

フィンランドはデザインに優れた国だ。
東京タワーとレインボーブリッジのライトアップは、フィンランドで勉強してきた日本人女性によってデザインされたものである。

ヘルシンキから列車で2時間ほど行ったところに世界遺産の可愛らしい木造教会がある。聖堂の外壁は伝統の校倉造りで18世紀の木造教会の特徴を残している。

I think many people know Finland is a country in Northern Europe but only a few people can point at it in a map.
I thought it was in the Scandinavian Peninsula with Sweden and Norway, but I have known it lies in the part near the root of the peninsula.
Scandinavia is the general name of Sweden and Norway in the Scandinavian Peninsula, and Norway lying on the north of Germany.
The five countries containing these three countries and Finland and Iceland are generally called Northern Europe.

Although Finland looks like a very big country in a map, it is 90% as large as Japan.
That is because it is situated farther north. It is the northernmost country next to Iceland in the world.
One fourth of the land is in the Arctic Circle, so you could experience the nights of the midnight sun in midsummer.  Lapland is just the place.
It is a region where you could observe auroras. The farther north you go, the more often you can see auroras.

Of course it is cold in such a country in the northern end, but a warm current makes the weather soften.
Nevertheless it often happens that it was -3℃ yesterday and it is -20℃ today.

As is called the country of forests and lakes, 70% of the land is forests and 10%, lakes. Surprisingly it is said there are more than 180,000 lakes.
The most suitable place where you could taste Finland as the country of forests and lakes is Karelia Region in the east called 'the lake district'.
The region looks like a big lake with expanded lands inside when you look in a map.　Many lakes like canals are intricate together.

There are 3S's Finns are proud of. I hear they are Sibelius, Sauna and Sisu(Finnish spirit).
Sibelius is famous for a symphonic poem ' Finlandia '.
The music not only has pathetic melody and rhythm, but also drove Finns to the dream of independence.
In around 1900 when he composed it Finland was under the political pressure from Russia, the neighboring country to the east.
Finland was also under the cultural pressure from Sweden, the neighboring country to the west. So ' independence' was both political and cultural.

They say there are more than 1 million saunas in the country with a population of 5.2 million.
It is said that almost every house has a sauna and apartment houses and working places are usually equipped with a common sauna.
But if you think it is like a Japanese bath, I can say you should not be surprised.

Sisu seems to be a philosophical concept of challenging strength against the pressure from wild nature, strong states and so forth.

If you create the fourth ' S ', it may be Santa Clause. In the suburbs of Rovaniemi, located at the entrance on Lapland, Santa Clause Village lies.
It is said that the post office in the village receives 460,000 letters addressed to Santa Clause every year.

Moomin, popular in Japan too, comes from books Tove Jansson, a Finnish author, kept writing 25 years. Postage stamps were sometimes published.

Paavo Nurmi is among well-known Finns. He was a distance runner representing 1920's.
He won 9 gold medals in the Olympic Games from 1920 to 1928.
In the Olympic Games in 1932 he could not participate because he was regarded as a professional.

One of the Finns naturalized in Japan is Tsurunen Marutei. He came to Japan in1967 as a Lutheran missionary.
Afterward he was engaged in politics and 4 years ago he was awarded the election as the runner-up.
He published many books including ' A Blue-eyed Dietman Goes.'
He introduced Japan by translating ' The Tale of Genji' and 'Freezing Point' and others into Finnish.

As is the same with other Northern Europeans, most of Finns belong to the Lutheran Church.
A Finn introduced to me a Finnish churchman missioning at Fukuyama, Japan.

They say quite a few Finns like Japan.
It may be mainly because in the Russo-Japanese War Japan defeated Russia, which ruled Finland with an iron hand. .
After the war the tyranny became weakened. And Finnish right expanded gradually, then women's suffrage was born for the first time in Europe.

The Finnish high school student I chat with by the internet like Japan very much.
He knows much about Japan and want to enter a Japanese university in the Kansai district.
He is planning to travel from Miyakojima Island to Hokkaido and observe every corner of Japan.
I am surprised to know he has read ' Tsurezuregusa(Essays in idleness)' and ' Bushido(chivalry)'.

Our society has ever invited a Finn as a guest. He said that he sometimes felt he heard Finnish here in Japan.

susi(Sushi) = wolf, kana(Kana letter) =hen, sama(Mr. or Ms. )=the same, joy(good) = drank,
kissa(tea drinking) = cat, koko(here) = all, suu(sip, breathe) = mouth,
totta kai(Did you take it?) = of course

Almost all European languages belong to Indo-European languages.
But interestingly enough Finnish belongs to the Uralic languages with Estonian and Hungarian.
So Finnish is quite different from the official languages of the countries on both sides.

The official languages of Finland are Finnish and Swedish. But the speakers of Swedish account for no more than 6%.
The official language of Aland, a dominion, is Swedish only.

Finland has been leading the world for two consecutive years in Program for International Student Assessment done every three years.
So Finland attracts worldwide attention.
Finnish education is analyzed in various ways.
I think cooperative study, synthetic education, valuing teachers' creativity and maintaining excellent teachers are the causes of its excellence.

Finland is a country excellent in design. Tokyo Tower and Rainbow Bridge are beautifully lighted up.
The lightening was designed by a Japanese woman, who had studied design in Finland.

There is a lovely wooden church, a World Heritage, two hours away from Helsinki by train.
The outer walls are made up of logs. The characteristic of a wooden church in 18th century remains in the church.
