★ホタル★

　　　東大寺の旧境内地にある陋屋の裏庭を、吉城川が流れている。
吉城川の名のひびきには似つかわしくない小川だが、１０年前ごろまでは、清らかな流れで、
カワエビや、モロコ、ウナギなどもいて、カワセミや、セキレイなどもよく飛んできた。 

梅雨のころともなれば、ホタルが盛んに飛び交い、座敷にまで闖入してきて、来客を
驚かせ、喜ばれもした。

* Fireflies *

The Yoshiki River 
flows through the rear garden of the little
cottage on the former grounds of Tpdai Temple in Nara.
There is something incongruous in the sound of " Yoshiki River"
as it applies to this small stream. yet up to about a decade ago,
it flowed along clear and provided a home for river shrimp,dace and
eels; birds like the kingfisher and the wagtail flitted about and when
the rainy season drew near, the place became filled withed a
swirling mass of fireflies, some even coming into people's
homes,surprising and delighting their guests.

★蛍火虫★

　　　在東大寺的旧境内地有間陋屋的裏面庭院、有條吉城川流過。即使有著
吉城川的大名、但是却是上小河川而己。約在１０年以前、有著清水一般的流水、
河蝦、小魚、鰻等等皆有。河蝉等也都会飛来。在梅雨季節時、蛍火虫更多。
有時闖入民家的客庁、驚動了客人、也譲客人感到驚喜。


カワエビや、モロコ、ウナギなどもいて、カワセミや、セキレイなどもよく飛んできた。 

梅雨のころともなれば、ホタルが盛んに飛び交い、座敷にまで闖入してきて、来客を
驚かせ、喜ばれもした。

　　　そんな生きるものもすっかり姿を消し、一時はザリガニが我がもの顔に流れを横行
していたが、それもみられなくなり、近頃目にするのは、ジュースや、ビールの空きかん、
駄菓子のビーニル袋の類である。

* Disappear *

Such creatures 
have completely disappeared. There were once crwwfish there
who sidled along the stream as if they owned it but all one sees nowadays
are pop and beer cans and candy wrappers.

　　像那種生物也完全消失了。有一段時期、野生的蟹在我行我素的到処走動。

光が目にとまった。

*Rainy season*

Yet, last year 
at the time of the rainy season,my wife called out ,
as she was getting dinner ready, that there were some firflies.
I rushed out onto the porch to take a look and spotted the

of grass by the river's edge.

　　但是、去年的梅雨時、我的内人在準備晩餐時、大声的叫説「有蛍火虫！」

とにかく１０余年ぶりに蘇ったホタルの光を目にして、嬉しくなった。

*Great Buddha firefly *

for 
 a species known as the Great Buddha firefly their illumination
was rather faint; it gave one the feeling of a '' meandering pulsation''
yet the sight of this firefly light, revived after an abence of m ore
than a decade , made one very happy indeed.

★大仏ホタル★

　　這是大仏蛍火虫、但是光大微弱了。感覚到有気無力的。不過這十数年来、総算可看到
蛍火虫的光点、心中還是很高興的。

そういう兆しは、部分的にしろ、公害が薄らいだ結果であろう。喜ばしいことである。

標題：　風の道

　　けものにもけもの道がるように、風にも風の道があると聞いた。例えば、
京の町家。狭い間口から、奥に向かって細く、通路がついている。これを通り庭と呼ぶのだが、
そこをどこからともなしに風が通っていく。通り庭は、夏の風を知り、夏の風をとらえる京の
智恵なのである。

Just as there are  
paths for animals, there are
paths for the wind. For instance, from the narrow
entrances of old houses in Kyoto, there are narrow
passageways leading to the back.

They are called '' tori-niwa'' (path to the garden),
and a wind conctantly blows through them.

The '' tori-niwa'' is evidence of the intelligence of the
people of Kyoto,who know and catch the wind of summer.

Iku Takenaka, the  
poet, told us about the paths for
the wind. He believes that people can live to a ripe
old age if they expose themselves to the natural wind.
When he is constructing a house, he contracts
a carpenter of the area who knows the winds of that
area. Takenaka sleeps with his windows open so that
the wind blows on him,not only in the summer, but
also in the winter.

He does not try to 
 prevent drafts. Once , one of his rain
doors was broken, and he had it repaired. But , as a recult,

In a poem,Takenaka wrote that a familiar wind was no

any of these appliances in his home.

風は住人を笑っているように思えた。

We visited a friend's 
apartment which was so hot it was stifling.
But when we stood beside the pillar in the middle of the room,
we felt a wind passing by.

near the pillar. It was an odd spot since it meant that the wind had to
make a U-turn after entering the window.

Nevertheless, it was the path for the wind. How strange it
was! It seemed as if the wind was laughing at the occupant
of the apartment.
