"Define 'frivolous' for me." It sounds a bit nebulous to me. What specifically is it that you're advocating? It was supposed to be quite a coup to land such a highflier. ────────────────────────────── frivolous, 軽薄な、取るに足らない ────────────────────────────── If you describe an activity as frivolous, you disapprove of it because it is not useful and wastes time or money. ex) The group says it wants politicians to stop wasting public money on what it believes are frivolous projects. ────────────────────────────── nebulous, 漠然とした ────────────────────────────── If you describe something as nebulous, you mean that it is vague and not clearly defined or not easy to describe. ex) Music is such a nebulous thing. ────────────────────────────── coup, 大当たり、大成功 ────────────────────────────── Office Perks (1)より A coup is an achievement which is thought to be especially good because it was very difficult. ex) The sale is a big coup for the auction house. ────────────────────────────── land, …を獲得する、…をものにする ────────────────────────────── Office Perks (1)より If you land something that is difficult to get and that many people want, you are successful in getting it. [INFORMAL] ex) He landed a place on the graduate training scheme. ────────────────────────────── highflier, 成功者、大物 ────────────────────────────── Office Perks (1)より A high-flyer is someone who has a lot of ability and is likely to be very successful in their career. in AM and sometimes in BRIT, use high flyer, high-flier ────────────────────────────── その他にも、次も押さえておきたい。[誌面の都合上省略] ★は重要表現 ────────────────────────────── なしです。 ■もう一度読んでみよう "I thought your opening remarks were frivolous."
